I am searching for descendants of Thomas W. Payne, 1865-1951 GA>AR to determine if he is the son of Carrie Ann Paine (nee Brewer), my great-grandaunt. Carrie Ann and son Thomas W. Paine were living in Pulaski County AR next door to her brother John Adam Brewer in the 1870 census. Family stories have Carrie Ann re-marrying and moving to a part of AR north of Pulaski County. From the 1900, 1910 & 1920 AR Census, all in Pope County, Freeman TWP, I have concluded that the Thomas W. Payne as listed most likely is the son of Carrie Ann. The spelling of Paine without the 'y', as shown in the 1870 census, may be an enumerator's error or maybe changed by Thomas. Carrie Ann lived near her son in the early 1900's but not knowing her married name I have not found her in any census. Thomas was married to Elizabeth Freeman (1865 - 1945) in 1883. Thomas died in El Reno, OK January 18, 1951 while enroute to CA. Funeral home records for Thomas list Sanford Payne, Eugene, OR as surviving son with three surviving daughters (1) Mrs. Florence Cooper (Florence Payne), Clear Lake, WA (2) Mrs. Cliff Nutt (Maude Payne), Oakland CA and (3) Mrs George W. Huff (Ellina Payne), Russellville, AR. Ten grandchildren and 23 g-grandchildren were indicated also. Thomas is buried in the Oak Grove Cemetery about 18 miles north of Dover, AR. I will appreciate hearing from a descendant or from anyone who might have information about Thomas. John Brewer jfbrewer52@msn.com Researching BREWER, BRADFORD, THOMASON, REEVES, VAUGHAN

Hi Elaine, I was going through some old e-mail messages and came upon this one from you. I do not have any Huddleston and Payne connections. I do have some Huddleston and Shumate connections. Dixie Lee Huddleston born March 25, 1904 in Bonham, Fannin Co., TX, died July 28, 1982 in Wichita Falls. TX., married September 1, 1919 to Daniel B. Shumate born March 10, 1900, place unknown, died July 8, 1962. Her parents were James William Huddleston born October 15. 1868 in Alton, Oregon Co., MO, died October 4, 1961 in Oklahoma City, OK, married December 14, 1872 in Fannin Co., TX. to Ada Lou Bassham born December 24, 1872 in Columbia, Maury Co., TN., died June 7, 1957 in Cyril, OK. Does any of this information sound familiar to you? I will be looking forward to hearing from you. My best wishes to you and your family. Hi all, I am forwarding this link, I found it very interesting and a great idea. Thought maybe others on the list might also like it. www.ancientfaces. com
Hi David Yes this has always been my understanding of the original derivation of the name PAYNE even wider than just Scotland. Those outside the major cities - "the country dwellers" which is more like the original meaning - were more likely to be non-Christians and so the name changed from country dwellers to Pagan to PAYNE, PAIN or PAINE, a point that has always interested me The word PAGAN itself is Middle English from the Latin 'paganus: 'villager, rustic' from pagus 'country district': in Christian Latin = 'civilian, heathen'. The meaning of civilian has been suggested that it was because the Christians reckoned themselves soldiers of Christ, though I wonder if it was also because the (Roman) soldiers would have taken their discharge, been recruited from and/or garrisoned cities. It would follow from this that my PAYNE/PAINE/PAIN family which I can trace back to Great Addington, NTH, ENG IN 1813 would not necessarily be related to your family - something like the SMITH families no being necessarily all related. Hi y'all, I went to Scottish Highland Games at Stone Mountain, GA this weekend and found an unusual name of PAGAN, PAIN there in a book. I also saw teeshirts with that name on it too. I always understand that our name Payne, Pain, Paine, and other various spellings came from the name PAGAN. It looks like the name PAGAN was our name in early Scotland????? Has anyone done much research in that area? I read somewhere that our family "PAGAN" was outside the city raising crops and taking care of the Royal animals but they wouldn't be part of their religion so that was how the name PAGAN is now used in a bad way???? ===== Thanks, David S. I just got your message. The school orchestra played in the concert tonight also. They played and sang classical music. It was nice of them to get a little culture. I just quickly scanned over your fine. It is very well done. John Pridmore and his family also went to AL after 1820. His son ,my ancestor Thomas Pridmore, was the only one to stay behind in Union. I noticed that your Father was born in Dover, Stratford, NH. Don has some ancestors born there in the 1600s and1700s. Dover was a big Quaker colony then. Did your father have ancestors in Dover? Don's ancestors in Dover were Hanson, Meader, Horne, Varney, Otis, and a few others. He had another ancestor there captured by the Indians. Her name was Elizabeth Meader Hanson. Here is her story from my FTM page. http://www.familytreemaker.com/users/j/o/h/Susan-C-Johanson/FILE/0003text.txt It's a great story. I don't know whether I could have endured what she went through. I see that you were an army family. My husband was a Navy officer for 20 years and is retired now, working as a consultant in the DC area. Let me know about your Dover , NH people if you have researched that part of your family tree. Susan -- Susan C.
