    3. Here is another letter from Joyce, David ----Original Message Follows---- From: Mamajoice@aol.com To: otime@hotmail.com Subject: Re: Payne Geneology Date: Wed, 22 Nov 2000 16:10:00 EST Yes, I know that the great-grandfather of my husband came from Franklin County, Ga. Carnesville, probably. He is the one that is supposed to have killed the carpetbagger. I certainly will pass on any information that I uncover, and will forward the b-dates and d-dates that I have, after the holiday. This is important to me because my husband is confined with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and congestive heart failure, and frankly, tracking his family is the most interested he has been in anything, outside of TV, and that is a mind-killer. Families have a tendency to use the same family names, which is why I pursued the Johns' in your geneology, to begin with. I had already tracked everything off the computer, and found some really interesting things, but then when I found your website, and you had the same thing I did, except that you had more information, and the interesting notation about J.M. Payne being buried in Georgia. I should tell you that I found the additional info about the 'deafness' in the family interesting. I had thought these family trees would be the perfect place to insert those kind of medical facts, for generations to follow. I am similtaneously tracking my family ancestors, Macons from Alabama and Polks from Darlington, S. C.---the Macons and the Paynes have an interesting coincidence in that both families had members who got property through Indian Land Lotteries. The Macons got Creek land, and the Paynes got Cherokee land. I have laughed that if it were really possible, we could document everyone being connected back to Adam and Eve--the more you find out, the more you want to know. Have a great holiday. 3. I received these mailings from Joyce and I havent heard of this before and wander if anyone can help her. Paynes by MamaJoice From: Mamajoice@aol.com Save Address - Block Sender To: otime@hotmail.com Save Address Subject: Payne Geneology Date: Tue, 21 Nov 2000 11:14:57 EST Reply Reply All Forward Delete Previous Next Close My husband's grandfather was John Wesley Payne, son of Jesse M. Payne of Franklin, Ga. The family story is that Jesse M. shot a carpetbagger, fled to TN, changed his name to James M., and subsequently came to Texas. He was married when he fled to TN, had at least one child, and had another, John Wesley, while he was in TN. The wife that is listed when he got to TX, was Mary Kate Mabry, and I can find one listing on Ancestry.com, for the combination of Mary Kate Mabry and Jesse Messer Payne. The problem arises because it shows the same birth date, same parents, etc. as Jesse Messer Payne, with Mahala Sartain. Do you have any knowledge of this? My thought is that not only did Jesse M. change his name in TN, but that of his wife as well. If you have any information to share on this, I would be so grateful. My e-mail is mamajoice@aol.com. My name is Joyce Polston Payne, and my husband is Edward M. Payne, Jr. Please do what ever you think you need to do to get any information on this. This tale of killing the carpetbagger and fleeing from Georgia is one I have heard since I have been a member of this family---and, that is over 50years. Only lately have I heard that he fled to TN, instead of coming straight to Texas. I just have a 'mystery-solving' kind of mind, and when I came across the 2 Jesse Messer Paynes, with the data matching, except for the wives, and then no further could I track Mary Kate Mabry---her history is recent ---as far as I could tell, though I was told that she has a connection with a Russell Mabry, and that that history was from Ephraim (4)---but, there doesn't seem to be a connection that I can find and verify. Frankly, if I were fleeing with a family, I would change all the records and names. The fact that bears on his having been in Tennessee is that John Wesley was born there. Thanks a lot, and I wish us both a lot of luck. Joyce Payne. I realized after I signed off yesterday that you did ask for more information and I will give you what I have, which isn't much. It did occur to me, last night, something that is a little strange. John Wesley Payne, my husband's grandfather, was 17 years younger than the brother that lived in Waco, James Franklin Payne. James F. Payne had a son, James Franklin Payne, Jr. What struck me last night, and I really do not know why I never thought of it before is this: these 2 brothers, John Wesley and James Franklin lived in town for years and never spent time together. The families were so separated that one side didn't even know about the other! A cousin explained that it was because of the dread "killed a carpetbagger' business and the need to protect the father: Jesse M. Payne/James M. Payne----that is maybe the deal in the beginning, but hardly plausible in these more enlightened times. The other thing that struck me was that in the John Wesley side of the family the custom has been to give the family watch, bible, etc., to the eldest son, and on down. But, John Wesley wasn't the oldest son in the family! My father-in-law was the oldest son of John Wesley and received the family watch, bible and when he died, the watch and bible came to my husband, and will go to our son, who is the oldest grandson. I'm just wondering if this was a family tradition from how far back---history tells us that in European families the first son gets it all and we just assumed that this was a carryover----but, it hit me last evening that John Wesley was not the first son! Have to track this down. I will forward after Thanksgiving the birth-dates and death-dates of the 2 brothers---and any other information I find. I will tell you though, that the father of those 2 brothers is buried in Lone Oak cemetery, Texas. Wouldn't it be interesting if James M. Payne buried in Georgia, is just a headstone? Joyce P. Payne. 3. Has anyone lost a Joseph PAYNE/PAINE born about 1762 somewhere in England. Joseph, my ggg grandfather, who was a widower at that time (what happened to his first wife?) married Jane Rowe in the village of Great Addington, NTH, ENG 29 March 1813. As there are no details in the parish registers of Great Addington for either Joseph or Jane they may well have come to Great Addington from another place/parish. Family tradition states that our PAYNE/PAINE family originated in Thrapston, NTH, ENG which is close to Great Addington but now that I know that all civil registrations for Great Addington are entitled "Registration District of Oundle and Thrapston in the sub-district of Thrapston in the County of Northampton I am wondering whether that's where the tradition concerning Thrapston comes from. So, has, anyone lost a Joseph PAYNE/PAINE from Thrapston (as that's still possible) or anywhere in England? Jim Jim & Bev Payne NEW ZEALAND jr_bjpayne@xtra.co.nz

Leslie Alderman nasalla@aol.com ____________________________________________________________________ From: NASALLA@aol.com Date: Wed, 8 Nov 2000 23:00:46 EST Subject: Payne File on Ancestry.com To: bigdaddy59@ky.freei.net I found the file you provided on Sarah Norman, Reuben Payne, etc. on Ancestry.com. You are the first to confirm what I thought was the case ... that Sarah married Joseph Keen after the death of Reuben. However, you show just the America born in 1836. I knew that my gggrandmother was America Payne, daughter of Reuben and Sarah. However, I knew her year of birth of 1851. This is on her death certificate and on her tombstone in Des Moines. Also knew she was married to James Hood. I finally had some clarification re: this year of birth confusion with information from another researcher. She had handwritten notes from an aunt over 20 years ago (who descended from the Addison Payne line in Sullivan county, MO) stating that the 1836 America died (date unknown) and that the name was reused with the daughter born in 1851. I have some confirmation of this from the 1860 census record for Joseph Keen in Monroe County. In addition to it, it lists Sarah, Ibby Payne, and America Payne. Ibby was 2-3 years older than America. She was born in 1848. Hope this helps. It was a great help for me to see Joseph Keen.
