    2. Hello! I am looking for information on a Mary N. Payne who married Henry C. Barnes. Mary and Henry were found on the 1870 and 1880 Van Zandt County TX census. She was born around 1847 according to the census. Her children were William Wiley Ranolph, James Albert, Laura, and Mary Ella Victoria Barnes. I would really like to hear from anyone who might could help me with this line. Henry may have possibly been from Sabine or San Augustine, TX before he came to Van Zandt. Thanks! Debbie

    3. Colonial Families of the United States, vol. I states that Martha Dandridge (b. 20 Sep 1748, d. 28 Sep 1791) of Hanover County, Va., married in 1769, ARCHER PAYNE (b. 1748). On 7 Dec 1797, Archer married 2nd, Betsy Brooks. Archer was the son of John Payne (1713-1784) of Goochland County, by his wife Jean Archer. Archer's brother's were also connected to the Dandridge's. Philip Payne, Sr. (1760-1840), married 13 Nov 1783, Elizabeth Dandridge; and George Woodson Payne married about 1787, Mary Claiborne Dandridge. All of these Dandridge's were daughter's of Colonel Nathaniel West Dandridge (7 Sep 1729-16 Jan 1786) of "Elsing Green," King William County, who married 18 Jun 1747 in Hanover County, Dorothea Spotswood (1732-25 Sep 1773). There are a couple of other things to mention. Dolley Payne, wife of President James Madison, was the sister of Lucy Payne who married in 1793, George Steptoe Washington. He was the nephew of President George Washington who had married Martha Dandridge, former wife of Daniel Parke Custis. Martha was therefore a cousin of the Dandridge daughter's above who all married Payne's. To give some indication of how closely the Payne's/Spotswood/Dandridge families had become, a look at the children of Archer and Martha is all that is necessary. They included: Jane Spotswood Payne John Robert Dandridge Payne Anne Spotswood Payne Dorothea Dandridge Payne Alexander Spotswood Payne And- I can't help but include this fact while on the subject. Another sister of the Dandridge/Payne girls above, Dorothea Spotswood (Dolley) Dandridge, was the wife of Gov. Patrick Henry, whom she married 9 Oct 1777 after a "hurriedly arranged" marriage. She had run off with John Paul Jones, whom her parents circle had a dislike for as they considered him to be a rouge pirate and smuggler. In any case, Patrick Henry and Dolley were the grandparents of Sarah Winston Henry, the wife of Dr. George Cabell Carrington, who was the great-grandfather of my father-in-law, Charles Craddock Carrington. Happy New Year! Patrick

    3. Hi PAYNE family researchers, I am searching for any information concerning Mary PAYNE (born 1781) who was married about 1800 to George CARDIFF (born abt 1780) in Carlow County, Ireland. They had the following children in Ireland: John (born 1802) George (born 1807) Thomas (born 1811) Richard (born 1814) Ann (born 1815) William (born 1819) George CARDIFF left County Carlow in 1820 with his brother Richard and settled in Lanark County, Ontario, Canada. Mary PAYNE and the children followed shortly after. I have a full list of descendants of this family, however, I have very little information on ancestors. George and Richard may have been the sons of either George (who married Jane SMITH) or Richard who are listed as landowners in County Carlow at that time. An earlier ancestor may have been Mark CARDIFF and his wife Martha FENNEL who were married in County Carlow in 1761. Any information would be greatly appreciated. 1. Fw: Payne Collection, #920
    2. Don Payne
    3. Greeting cousins: We are still in the game. I am forwarding correspondence from Wayne Morris, LDS Salt Lake City, advising our project is under consideration pending "approval". He indicates that, upon completion of filming, the custodian of the records, (the Alderman Library), would receive a free donor copy of the microfilm. Other film would be accessed at a Family History Center or at the main library in Salt Lake City. Mr. Morris suggests the possibility of a joint venture whereby we could receive a free copy of the film if we could provide assistance in organizing and indexing the materials to be filmed. Although the idea of receiving a free copy is appealing, I believe we have a more fundamental concern. We want them to take on this project. As I see it, they represent our best chance to have a competent organization do the filming and later, to provide stewardship of the product within a recognized institution. This will make the film available not only to us but to future generations of Payne Family researchers. To help them make a favorable "final decision", we should be viewed as willing to cooperate with them and to contribute to the overall effort. Who is willing to volunteer to go the Charlottesville and begin the work of indexing, organizing, and cataloging the Payne Collection? Let me know and we will open discussions with Mr. Morris and the Alderman Library staff on how best to proceed. Merry Christmas, Don Payne Subject: Re: Payne Collection, #920 19 Dec 2000 Dear Mr. Payne: Mr. Heighton forwarded to me your follow up letter concerning the above collection in Charlottesville, Virginia. for a response. I have forwarded your recommendation to our field staff for follow up on the recommendation. He is located in Ohio and will schedule a visit to the library for further review and evaluation for inclusion, when he is next in the area. I should inform you that our current scheduled projects are at this time two or more years out into the future for the earliest possible filming date if approved. As you may well guess, we have literally hundreds of cameras filming throughout the world every work day during the year. It is not a simple matter to add another camera project. Since we are entirely funded from within , there are profiles established to determine which projects to include, and we must work entirely within our budget constraints. Should we film the collection a donor copy at no cost , would be offered to the custodian of the records. Other use of the film would be either accessed at a Family History Center near to you or at our main library here in SLC. If a family or organization will provide substantial help to organize, prepare for filming or indexing we could discuss a possible joint venture agreement whereby you could obtain a copy of the film at no cost. We appreciate the recommendation about the collection and especially the extensive informattion describing it. This is very helpful to our collection development people in evaluating such a collection and in reaching a final decision. We will be happy to keep you informed as we make progress in regard to the Payne Collection, # 920. Wayne
