I am trying to find info on John F Payne b. 1856 in TN, he is the son of Nehemiah H. Payne b. 1808 and Frances Stepp, he is in William Goshen Payne's Bible as his brother. He moved to Ark and married Frances [Fannie] Edmiston in 1877 in Washington co, Ark. His children were born there. My grandfather Joseph Sanford Payne was his first, he was born 22 Nov 1877 Morrow, Ark. Many years later John moved to California, near Fresno, and had a fig farm. He was murdered in his orchard in the 1930's. I am trying to find out how to get a death certificate and find his burial. Family lore has it that his lawyer killed him by blows to the head. He did not believe in banks and was very well to do. It is said that two years later the lawyer came back [he dissappeared at time of John's death] and ended up getting the land. I have tried for years to find something on this murder, it was never solved. His wife Fannie was in Texas at the time visiting her daughter, Lou Ellen Payne Flowers. It is said that Fannie moved in with her daughter after that and died in Texas. John the youngest son, lived on the farm until it was lost, he died in 1943. I have received the following message via my web site (www.paine.org ) and am unable to answer it myself. I have however seen postings to the list which make reference to a Robert Treat Paine and I wonder whether any one can help. Please reply direct to address below. Thanks John Paine -----Original Message----- From: MelAngel02@aol.com [mailto:MelAngel02@aol.com] Sent: 16 March 2001 00:37 To: webmaster@paine.org Subject: research Hey! I am currently writing a thesis about HH Richardson, a famous 19th century architect and his relationship to Hubert von Herkomer. Apparently the two met through a Robert Treat Paine from Massachusetts. Do you know anything about this particular RT Paine or somewhere I could possibly locate more info? If it helps, all I know is that his gentleman was a philanthropist and Richardson designed a house in Waltham for this family. Could he possibly be related to the other RT Paine, signer of the Declaration of Independence? Thank you for your time! M.Wilson
