    1. Moses Payne of Pendleton Dt., SC, 1790-1820

    3. Has anyone put online the complete text of the pension application of Moses Payne (b. 1764 on the coast between MD and NC)? I've received several replies to my initial question. I'm grateful for all the help. Now, I'm looking for a little more clarification. One reply had the Moses Payne of Pendleton District, SC, going to St. Clair Co., AL, rather than Jefferson Co., AL. Are those different names for the same place? What name is in the pension application? If the Moses Payne who's in the federal census of the Pendleton District from 1790 to 1820 is the one who submitted the pension application while in Blount Co., AL, in the 1830's, then he doesn't appear to be the Moses Payne who was the brother of Thomas Jr., Nathaniel, Shrewsbury, Poindexter, Zebediah, and Ruth. (I hope I got all those right from memory--they're named in the will of Thomas Payne, Jr., in 1786 in Franklin Co., GA. The only geographic link I found in looking at the web links you gave me was the John Lee who was given a grant for bringing people to MD. He was from Westmoreland Co., VA. The Elizabeth Poindexter & Ruel Shrewsbury line of Paynes (hence those rare names of Poindexter and Shrewsbury used in the line of Paynes who were in Franklin Co., GA, and showed up in Bedford Co., TN, in 1812) were in Westmoreland Co., VA, the same as that John Lee--and, I suppose, the Payne that was among the people he took to MD. If there is a connection there between the Paynes in the area of Franklin Co., GA, and Pendleton District, SC, it goes back pretty far. Is there an online index or text of the Franklin Co., GA, census for 1790--1820 that I could look at to see if there's another Moses Payne across the river in Franklin Co., GA? I've looked, but haven't found one yet. If not, is there anyone who could look (or has looked) and provide that info? Thanks for your help, Bob

    3. I received this a while back from Faye Jarvis Moran >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Visit the JARVIS FAMILY Homepage http://www.erols.com/fmoran Joseph, Here is some information that I found in the "Marylanders to Carolina" Moses Payne was born in 1764 "on the coast between Maryland and North Carolina" as his father (not named) was moving to North Carolina. He lived in Orange county at the time of his enlistment in the Rev War. After the war he moved to Pendelton District SC, then to Jefferson CO Ala and then to Blount Co ALA . There he applied for a pension on Marcy 30 1835. His date of death was not stated but a John Rickey was admin. of his estate and "he received final Payment on June 30 1855, which was paid to Nov. 27, 1848. His surviving children in 1844 were Isaac Payne, Nancy Richey, Cynthia McMahan, Jane Paynet and Margaret Fanley or Farley. Nehemiah Payne was born on Dec 15 1733 in Dorchester Co MD and lived in Orange Co NC at the time of his enlistment in the Rev War. After the war he lived in Greenville District, SC and in Jan 1824 moved to Hall Co GA There he applied for a pension on June 17, 1833. rmeadows <rmeadows@krl.org> wrote: > > In trying to figure out which Moses Payne I'm descended from, I've checked the > family of a Moses Payne in what was the area of the Pendleton District, SC, in > the 1790, 1800, 1810, and 1820 censuses. > > I'm looking there for two reasons.  One, a kind hearted fellow put those > censuses on the SCGenWeb site--nothing beats looking at something that's > available.  Two, my Moses was in Bedford Co., TN, in the first half of the > 19th century; and I've found that a Shrewsbury Payne and a Zebediah Payne > bought land in Bedford Co., TN, in April 1812. > > Administration of the estate of Shrewsbury Payne was handled by Sally (his > widow) and a Moses Payne.  There may have been more than one Moses Payne in > Bedford Co., TN, in 1820-1825 (the time I'm most interested in); so I'm not > able to assume the adm'r Moses was a son of Shrewsbury. > > Shrewsbury and Zebediah Payne in Bedford Co., TN, appear to be the brothers of > Thomas Payne, Jr., whose 1786 will in Franklin Co., GA, named his brothers and > sister. > > In looking to see if their brother, Moses, was in the Franklin Co., GA, area > with them (as I suspect, since he and Nathaniel were left specific bequests of > land by Thomas Payne, Jr.); and if he came to Bedford Co., TN, with them; I > checked those censuses of the area across the river in SC. > > The family of that Moses Payne appears to have had the following people, based > solely on those censuses: > > Moses Payne, b. 1755--1774 (probably by 1765, to be 21 by 1786) > His wife, b. 1774--1775 > Son #1, b. 1784--1790  (gone from the household by 1820) > Dau #1, b. 1784--1790  (gone by 1820) > Dau's #2 thru #5, b. 1790--1800  (gone by 1820) > Son #2, b. 1794--1800 > Son #3, b. 1800--1802 > Son #4, b. 1802--1804 > Dau #6, b. 1804--1810 > Dau's #7 & #8, b. 1810--1820 > > Has anyone identified this family? > > Did this Moses Payne stay in the area of the Pendleton District, SC, in the > 1820's (so that he was probably not available/eligible to serve as adm'r of > the estate of Shrewsbury Payne in 1820-1825 in Bedford Co., TN)? > > Thanks for any help, > Bob Meadows > > > -- Joe Payne Knoxville, TN __________________________________________________________________ Get your own FREE, personal Netscape Webmail account today at http://webmail.netscape.com/

    1. Moses Payne, Pendleton District, SC 1790-1820
    2. rmeadows
    3. In trying to figure out which Moses Payne I'm descended from, I've checked the family of a Moses Payne in what was the area of the Pendleton District, SC, in the 1790, 1800, 1810, and 1820 censuses. I'm looking there for two reasons. One, a kind hearted fellow put those censuses on the SCGenWeb site--nothing beats looking at something that's available. Two, my Moses was in Bedford Co., TN, in the first half of the 19th century; and I've found that a Shrewsbury Payne and a Zebediah Payne bought land in Bedford Co., TN, in April 1812. Administration of the estate of Shrewsbury Payne was handled by Sally (his widow) and a Moses Payne. There may have been more than one Moses Payne in Bedford Co., TN, in 1820-1825 (the time I'm most interested in); so I'm not able to assume the adm'r Moses was a son of Shrewsbury. Shrewsbury and Zebediah Payne in Bedford Co., TN, appear to be the brothers of Thomas Payne, Jr., whose 1786 will in Franklin Co., GA, named his brothers and sister. In looking to see if their brother, Moses, was in the Franklin Co., GA, area with them (as I suspect, since he and Nathaniel were left specific bequests of land by Thomas Payne, Jr.); and if he came to Bedford Co., TN, with them; I checked those censuses of the area across the river in SC. The family of that Moses Payne appears to have had the following people, based solely on those censuses: Moses Payne, b. 1755--1774 (probably by 1765, to be 21 by 1786) His wife, b. 1774--1775 Son #1, b. 1784--1790 (gone from the household by 1820) Dau #1, b. 1784--1790 (gone by 1820) Dau's #2 thru #5, b. 1790--1800 (gone by 1820) Son #2, b. 1794--1800 Son #3, b. 1800--1802 Son #4, b. 1802--1804 Dau #6, b. 1804--1810 Dau's #7 & #8, b. 1810--1820 Has anyone identified this family? Did this Moses Payne stay in the area of the Pendleton District, SC, in the 1820's (so that he was probably not available/eligible to serve as adm'r of the estate of Shrewsbury Payne in 1820-1825 in Bedford Co., TN)? Thanks for any help, Bob Meadows

    1. more about my GEORGE WASHINGTON PAYNE
    2. gencon
    3. Hello everyone - Remember- I sent you the letter about George Washington PAYNE and how I was able to find him thru the hospital records in St Louis, Missouri - I thought perhaps if I told you what I know of him, one of you may know of the family - I know very little about George - I have his birth, death and marriage to Rosa Burnett- I know that Rosa and George had 3 children - 1. Nettie 1885 [she changed her birth date so often to stay younger- but that is the correct year!] 2. Lester 1888 3. Theresa b 1890- our line I know that Lester's high chair fell into the fire place while Rosa was down the hill getting a bucket of water- when she came back he was laying in the fire, with Nettie screaming - Lester lived for 2 days - this was before 1890 [he died before Theresa was born - we have no written proof about Lester's death - just family knowledge passed down-] I know that Theresa was born 1890 in Pike county, Indiana - I have lost them in the census after that - I know that Rosa left George abt 1900 and took Nettie with her, leaving the youngest child, Theresa who was abt 10 with her father George. [have always found that odd - don't you?] I know that Rosa married 2nd perhaps abt 1900? TO Albert PARISH and they lived in Ohio, Indiana and Michigan - Rosa died 1920 at Hillsdale, Michigan where she is buried. I know that Theresa at age 12 didn't want to live with her father any more, and asked the police how she could be taken from him - they told her to go stand on a corner after curfew and they [police?] would pick her up - Theresa went home put all of her belongings in a pillow case and went with a girl friend and stood on a corner until she was picked up.. She was taken to a Industrial School for Girls [don't know the complete name of it or where it was] Theresa lived at the home until she was 16 when she went to live with a family by the name of STRONG in Strongville, Ohio. We have pictures of Nettie and her mother - we only have a couple of pictures of Theresa and her mother - Theresa married 14 March 1908 TO George HAYNES at Strongville, Cuyahoga, Ohio- I have a picture of the whole family, Rosa, her 2nd husband Albert PARISH, Nettie and her two children - Theresa, her husband George HAYNES and their two children , Ernie and Maxine- they were all standing by George and Theresa's 'new' 1920 car-- this was just before Theresa, George and their 2 children Ernest Asa age 10 and Maxine Louise HAYNES age 2 left for California and the anticipated smell of the orange blossoms- this was in 1920 - Rosa died 2 months after Theresa and family were in California - Theresa couldn't go back to Michigan for her mothers funeral- which bothered her all the rest of her life. Nettie soon moved to California - she and her younger sister Theresa were close - and enjoyed each other's company - Aunt Nettie was like "Auntie Mame" life was exciting every time we were around her... always something new was happening. The next 'I' know of George is when he was 78 years old and visiting his daughter Theresa in Laguna Beach, California - He got angry at something - so the family story goes - he got on a train and left for his home - [I don't know where that was] He became ill on the train and was removed to the hospital in St Louis, Missouri - and you know 'the rest of the story' from the letter I posted 2 days ago- I have some pictures from Aunt Netties' shoe box - of families - who I don't know other than "The Kelly's - aunt and uncle and cousins on Papa's side" Papa was George Washington PAYNE- or Papa's cousins on another picture - Thanks for listening - Wilma Fleming Haynes gencon@harborside.com

It must set your mind at rest to know that his unclaimed body was treated with dignity. I'm glad for you that you found the information for which you were searching. Anne Nelson Tulsa

    3. This is the letter I received that I was telling you about in my earlier query - Thought maybe you would want to read it. WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY School of Medicine St. Louis, Missouri 63110 Department of Anatomy Oct 15, 1965 660 South Euclid Avenue Dear Mrs Haynes: Your letter asking for information about the body of George Washington Payne has been turned over to me to answer. I am happy indeed to be able to give you some reassuring information because we do have records which cover the period you refer to. Our records indicates that George W. Payne, age 77 years, died at the St. Louis City Hospital on April 7, 1832 and that pneumonia was the cause of his death. The body was delivered to Washington University School of Medicine on April 12, 1932 under the auspices of the Missouri State Anatomical Board. Bodies which are unclaimed automatically fall under the jurisdiction of the Board which is responsible for their assignment to the appropriate educational institutions of the State. One of the provisions of the Anatomical Law of Missouri is that the unclaimed body must not be subject to study for a minimum of 30 days after death. This provision is to provide time for relatives to claim a body for burial. Following this period, study of the structure of the body may be undertaken at any time. Later on in the year of 1932 the study of this body was undertaken, and following completion the remains were cremated. In recent years laws have been passed at different times in the various states which permit an individual to will his body for scientific study. I mention this to reassure you that science has great need for this kind of study and that the study of the body of your relative was a real contribution to medical science. I hope our records have provided you with the proof you are searching for to establish the identity of the George Washington Payne who was your relative. There is a penciled note one our record card which indicates that he had been born in Indiana and that his mother and father were from Pennsylvania. With all good wishes, Sincerely Yours, Mildred Trotter Professor of Anatomy Thanks Wilma Fleming Haynes gencon@harborside.com

The only reason I can see for my having it, is for the name Payne. Thats my husbands family name. However, in going thru this book, I see no one who is connected to his family. It is full of information on these family names. The following is from the index: Payne-Wylie Pedigree Chart Payne family records Couch-Patton family records Shannon-Killion Family records Records Researched Spurlin-McCoully Family Records Goodpasture family Records Records Researched Wylie-McBriar Family Records Tuttle-Walker Family Records Records Researched Loyd-Sanders Pedigree Charts Loyd-Hooker Family Records Records Researched Sanders-Pollard Family Records Records Researched The earliest record I can find is 1806 in Ireland. This book has family in: Ireland,NewYork,Indiana,Ohio,Tennessee and Missouri. If you can send me some names and dates,or places, I can check for you. I would like to give this book to the family it belongs to, I'm sure they would like to have it. It would be a goldfine for a Genealogist. Please e-mail me at Gnat282@cs.com
