    1. RE: Reuben Payne family of Orange, VA
    2. kS2Oc5yKeBE= dpVpTiYLRebzj//JP08P3A==
    3. Good luck, Kevin. Your message discusses a situation similar to mine with the WARINGs of Essex Co. There are significant omissions and errors in the genealogy of the principal genealogist, Hoskins. It was only through the help of online "cousins" that I was able to get information on my PAYNEs, John (b. abt. 1615 in England) and his son, Robert, the namesake of many WARINGs to follow. My PAYNE connection ends at Thomas WARING (b. 1719) --sixth great grandfather, who married Elizabeth (Betty) PAYNE in abt. 1738. She was allegedly born in Hanover Co. VA. date unknown. Would like to know more about Robert PAYNE who went by the name Robert DAVIES for a period of approx. five years prior to 1667 when his petition to restore his name as PAYNE was approved by the County Court at Rappahannock (later Essex) Co. Your message betrays (if that's the correct word) the problem with the PAYNEs, several groups of whom lived in Lancaster/Rappahannock/Essex Co. area in the 17th and 18th centuries. The Col. stated that among ". . .the fairly well defined groups of Paynes,. . .there does not appear to be any convincing evidence of consanguinity. . . ." I think it exists, but he just didn't have "proof." I trust you will post your findings on the PAYNE-L page etc. and we can follow it. Thanks for your posting. John Anderson ----- Original Message ----- From: To: PAYNE-L@rootsweb.com Sent: 7/27/01 8:52:06 AM Subject: Reuben Payne family of Orange, VA Fellow Payne researchers-- Are any of you researching the Reuben Payne family of Orange Co., VA? The reason I ask is that it is increasingly apparent to me that Col. Payne's reconstruction of this family in the Paynes of Virginia is seriously flawed. For example, a comparison of the Orange Co. and Rockingham Co. Marriage volumes by Vogt Kegley reveal at least one daughter unknown to Col. Payne. Second, William Harrison Payne, considered by Col. Payne to have been the eldest child and to have been born about 1776, is consistently tracked in the various census records of Rockingham Co. as having been born about 1791. This is not to criticize Col. Payne and I know that Vogt Kegley's books also contain errors. My interest is simply to accurately reconstruct this family. Can anyone help? Thank you. 2. Sandra Knight
    3. The Payne Memorial and Reunion is not far away (Sept. 9, in Lee County, MS) for those related to Capt. John Payne and his wives, Cassie Marcy Payne and Phoebe Caroline Cagle Payne. Even though Capt. John is buried in our cemetery (Payne Family Cemetery) its been very difficult to find any information about him during the Indian removal. He was not in the Civil war but 3 of his sons were, James William, Columbus C. and Benjamin F. were all in "the war". I think our John was probably living in TN when all personnel connected to federal armies were called in. Since he had to have been in AL as he married Cassie in Marengo County, AL (Jan. 1838) during the Indian removal. If you think you are related to this family or know of Capt. John Payne in TN or AL, I would love to hear from you. Sandra K.

    1. PAYNE, Henry Franklin...1900 Census Data
    2. Kathleen Bowen
    3. Hi List, I recently received the following census info from a researcher of an unrelated line (she kindly checked when she had the film available to her, at a local FHC I believe): Twelfth Census of the United States: Schedule No. 1 - Population; State: Virginia; County: Culpeper; Supervisor's District No.: 8; Enumeration District No.: 8; Sheet No.: 2; Township or other division of County: Jefferson Township; Name of Institution: (blank); Name of incorporated city, town, or village, within the above-named division: (blank); Ward of City: (blank); Enumerated by me on the 5th & 6th day of June, 1900: Henry Cxxxxx? Coons, Enumerator: Lines 72-74; Dwelling #29; Family #29: [Format: Name, Relationship, Race, Gender, DOB - Month/Year, Age last Bday, Marital Status, # years mrd., Mother of how many children, Father of how many children, Place of birth, Place of birth of Mother, place fo birth of father, Citizenship, Occ/Trade/Profession & mos. not employed, Education: Read/write/speak English]: Payne, Henry F. Head W M June 1875 24 M 4 Virginia Virginia Virginia Farm Laborer/0 Yes:read/write/speak English; --------, Suzy A. Wife W F Mar 1879 21 M 4 1 1 Va. Va. Va. Yes: read/write/speak Eng. --------, Molley E. Daughter W F May 1900 0/12 S Va. Va. Va. The household enumerated prior to theirs is that of Robert C. Embry and the one after is that of John W. Jacobs. As usually happens to me - the new information briongs up additional questions because there are slight variations form info I have from other sources! First, my grandmother - Molley E. Payne on this census - spelled her name "Mollye" on her SS-5; Additionally, I have a marriage record that gives the date Henry and Susan were married as 30 Dec 1897 in Washington, D.C. (Susan's maiden name was Payne - she and Henry were 3rd cousins), yet the census shows them married 4 years, when I calculate only 2 years 5 months at the time of the census. "Suzy A." is given as Susan Anna PAYNE by Mollye on her SS-5.... Here is what I presently have for Henry's parents: John Clinton PAYNE, b. abt. 1847 in Fauquier Co., VA, d. ?, m. 14 Jan 1869 in Fauquier Co., Va. to Minerva KEARNS, b. ?, d. ? (she si a brick wall of mine!). I list their children as Hnery Franklin (above), John T., Walter Scott, Elvira, Martha, Martinetti, Gibson, Mason, Harry , Minerva, Rebecca, and Bessie. Here is what I presently have for Susan's parents: Robert Gordon PAYNE, b. 1852 in Fauquier Co., VA, d. ?, m. 23 Dec 1874 in Culpeper Co., Va. Mary Lewis HOLTZCLAW, b. ?, d.? (another wall - I **know** she must be a descendant of the Germanna Holtzclaws, but no one seems to know who her parents are...). The only child of theirs that I list is Susan, above. Any additional information is welcomed! 1. RE: 1600's England to MA to VA and England to VA
    2. kS2Oc5yKeBE= dpVpTiYLRebzj//JP08P3A==
    3. Hello Bellinda: That message you sent 7/3/01 was a firecracker--appropriate for the 4th of July. I can't help you with your long list of names, except for John PAYNE (b. abt. 1615 in England). He's my 8th great Grandfather. Until you wrote I didn't know he had a daughter, Margaret. My principal interest has been his son, Robert, who went under the name DAVIES for about five years prior to 1667. You probably know that Robert had a daughter, Elizabeth (Betty) who married Thomas Waring in about 1738. From these two spring the WARING family in Old Rappahannock (Essex) Co. VA. my line. I would appreciate any information you might have on 1) why Robert's alias, and 2) It appears that Elizabeth was "the heiress" of the PAYNE lands, passed on to the WARINGs through her marriage to Thomas WARING. Any ideas on why this was since she also had a brother Robert PAYNE, Jr.? Also, Brooke Payne through Patrick Payne, surmises that John PAYNEs wife's surname was JENNINGS since John Payne lived next door to John Jennings on Pepetick Creek and was fast friends with the JENNINGS family. There is also a possibility that Margaret JENNINGS was John Payne's second wife. Was Margaret ROBINSON the first? ROBINSON is in my line: Catherine Payne ROBINSON is my 5th great Grandmother tending to support John's wife, Margaret, as a Robinson. I have no family history on Catherine. Any thoughts on this possibility? Do you have Catherine's parents, siblings in your line? My regular email address is: mijojohn@earthlink.net . Drop a line. Good luck with your lengthy search. Will be watching for results in PAYNE-L. Beginning with Isaac ALLERTON, Jr., (son of Isaac ALLERTON, Sr. and Feare BREWSTER,) who married as his 1st wife, Elizabeth WILLOUGHBY, (daughter of Thomas WILLOUGHBY,) and Isaac ALLERTON, Jr. then married as his 2nd wife Mrs. Elizabeth THOROUGHGOOD/THOROWGOOD (OVERZEE) (COLCLOUGH,) who was the widow of 1st husband, Simon OVERZEE, who died in 1660, and then she was the widow of her 2nd husband, (Major) George COLCLOUGH, who died in 1662. I would imagine that (Major) George COLCLOUGH is from the COLCLOUGH family that married into the PARTRIDGE? and/or RIVETT? family of my 8th great grandmother, Amy/Amee/Aimee PARTRIDGE?/RIVETT? who was born: abt./aft. 1640, possibly in London, England, and married (Colonel) Alexander DONIPHAN, born: abt. 1640 in Plymouth, Devonshire, England, (parents: ??,) and they were the parents of my 7th great grandmother, Amy DONIPHAN, born: abt. 1662, who married as her 1st husband, (Captain) John KELLY, born: abt. 1660, (son of Penelope ? and Matthew KELLY.) After (Captain) John KELLY's death, his wife, Mrs. Amy DONIPHAN (KELLY) married her 2nd husband, Edward RANSDELL. The aforementioned (Captain) Alexander DONIPHAN and his 1st wife, Amy PARTRIDGE?/RIVETT? were the ancestral grandparents of (Colonel) William Barrett TRAVIS and (Captain) Alexander DONIPHAN and his 2nd wife, Margaret MOTT(E) were the ancestral grandparents of (President) Harry S. TRUMAN. And the 3rd wife of (Captain) Alexander DONIPHAN was Susannah ? (Captain) John KELLY and wife, Amy DONIPHAN, were the parents of my 6th great grandmother, Ann KELLY, born: abt. 1696 in VA, died: 1734/1735, who married my 6th great grandfather, William JENNINGS, Jr., born: bet. 1695-1700 in VA, possibly Sittenburne Parish, Rappahannock Co., VA, died: 1733 in Richmond Co., VA, and he was the son of William JENNINGS, Sr., born: abt. 1668 in Sittenburne Parish, Rappahannock Co., VA, died: in Lunenberg Parish, Richmond Co., VA, (son of Margaret PAYNE, (daughter of John PAYNE, born: abt. 1615 in England, immigrant to Old Rappahannock Co., VA, whose wife is thought by many to be Margaret ROBINSON, (daughter of Richard ROBINSON, early 1600's Tidewater immigrant,) and 1st husband, John JENNINGS, born: abt. 1633 in England, (immigrant to Old Rappahannock Co., VA from England,) and Mary WILLOUGHBY, born: abt. 1670 in ?, (parents: ??). I am interested in how Mary WILLOUGHBY was, most likely, related to the aforementioned Elizabeth WILLOUGHBY and her father, Thomas WILLOUGHBY. Elizabeth WILLOUGHBY married Isaac ALLERTON, Jr. before 1652. With Mary WILLOUGHBY being born in abt. 1670 it is quite possible that she was a child of a brother of Elizabeth and a son of Thomas WILLOUGHBY. Returning to the aforementioned Ann KELLY who married William JENNINGS, Jr., their son, Edward Salley JENNINGS, born: 1720 in Richmond Co., VA, (my 5th great grandfather,) is thought to have married a woman named Sarah MOORE. They were the parents of John JENNINGS, (RS,) born: abt. 1748 in Richmond Co., VA, who married Rachel JORDAN, born: abt. 1750, (parents: ??, thought to be descended from the JORDAN's, (and possibly BAILEY's,) of JORDAN'S JOURNEY family group,) and they were the parents of my 3rd great grandfather who was Bailey JENNINGS, born: abt. 1789 in VA, who married his 1st wife, Kitty EARLE, born: abt. 1795, and they married on 22 Dec 1811 in Christian County, Kentucky which later became Caldwell County, KY. Kitty EARLE was the daughter of Tabitha WILLIAMS, born: 1766 in North Farnham Parish, Richmond Co., VA, and was the daughter of Catherine "Caty" ?, (parents: ??,) and her husband, George WILLIAMS, (2nd son named George of his parents, both born to two different WILLIAMS lines in 1600's VA, his mother: Ann WILLIAMS is from the BILLINGTON - WILLIAMS lineage and his father: Roger WILLIAMS is from the PEMBERTON - WILLIAMS through Sydrach WILLIAMS, brother of (Rev./Gov.) Roger WILLIAMS, founder of Rhode Island. Kitty EARLE's father and Tabitha WILLIAMS' husband was Samuel EARLE, IV, (Sgt./Rev. War,) born: 1760 in Town Run, Fauquier Co., VA, (2nd son named Samuel EARLE, IV, of his father, (Major) Samuel EARLE, III, born: 1692 in Westmoreland Co., VA, (1st Member of the House of Burgesses from Frederick Co., VA,) with his 2nd much younger wife by abt. 41 years, Elizabeth HOLBROOK, born: abt. 1733 in VA. (With his 1st wife, Anna SORRELL, (descends from O'CANNY,) (Major) Samuel EARLE, III, was the father of a 1st son to be named Samuel EARLE, IV, born: abt. 1727, died: abt. 1752, who married a Miss ? PERKINS and there were many other Samuel EARLE descendants as well.) (Major) Samuel EARLE, III was the son of Phillis BENNETT, (daughter of John BENNETT,) and Samuel EARLE, II, (son of Bridget HALE, (daughter of Thomas HALE/HAYLES,) and Samuel EARLE, I, (son of Mary SYMONDS/SYMONS and (Sir) John EARLE.) Phillis BENNETT's mother or stepmother was Matilda ALLERTON who appears to have been a daughter of Isaac ALLERTON, Jr. and his 2nd wife, Elizabeth THOROUGHGOOD/THOROWGOOD but I am still trying to find more information. Matilda ALLERTON married 1st husband, Samuel EARLE, I as his 2nd wife after the death of his 1st wife, Bridget HALE, and Mrs. Matilda ALLERTON (EARLE) was the stepmother of Samuel EARLE, II. Then after the death of Samuel EARLE, I, Mrs. Matilda ALLERTON (EARLE) married her 2nd husband, William RUST, (and they are related to my LAMKIN and COX lineage from which I descend through George LAMKIN and Hannah COX, (whose 2nd husband was Samuel DEMOURVILLE and also related to my PAYNE lineage of John PAYNE mentioned earlier,) and then after his death, Mrs. Matilda ALLERTON (EARLE) (RUST) married her 3rd husband, John BENNETT, (father of Phillis BENNETT,) and she became either the stepmother of or was the mother of Phillis BENNETT who married Matilda's stepson, Samuel EARLE, II. Whew! And regarding the aforementioned Kitty EARLE and Bailey JENNINGS, they were the parents of my 2nd great grandmother, Sarah "Sally" JENNINGS, born: 1821/22 in Covington, MS, who married as the 3rd wife of Jeremiah "Jerry" PARKER, born: 1795 in Maryland, (parents: ??,) and they were the parents of my great grandfather, Spencer B. PARKER, born: 1859, who married my great grandmother, Rachael Moranda LEWIS, (aka COLEMAN,) who married Wesley BRIGHT as her 1st or 2nd husband, and she was born abt. 1851 in Jones Co., MS, and she was the daughter of John LEWIS, born: abt. 1820 in Jones Co., MS, (son of Howell LEWIS, born: bet. 1782 - 1788 in Granville Co., NC, and his wife, Nancy COPELAND, (daughter of Rachael TUCKER and Ripley COPELAND.) I hope someone can help me put together these missing pieces mentioned above. In advance, I thank you. 1. Robert Payne aka Robert Davies, Essex (Old Rappahannock/Old Lancaster) Co. VA
    2. kS2Oc5yKeBE= dpVpTiYLRebzj//JP08P3A==
    3. Am related to the above Robert Payne, the father of my 6th great Grandmother, Elizabeth (Betty) Payne the wife of Thomas Waring (m. 1738). Robert went by the name Robert DAVIES for a period of at least five years before 1667 when he petitioned the Rappahannock Co. VA Court to restore his name to PAYNE. Am seeking information about the reasons for the alias. Will appreciate any hard information, any clues or suggestions of avenues to follow.
