    1. JOSEPH PAYNE/PAINE - PHEBE PALMER, N. Y. STATE
    2. Seeking information - Joseph Payne/Paine born Rensselaer County, New York about August 1788. Married Phebe Palmer, oldest daughter of Fenner Palmer and his first wife Elizabeth Hoag. I believe Joseph to be the son of Smith Payne and Lydia Brockway but lack a source of dedicated proof. Joseph and Phebe lived Rensselaer County, N.Y., Wayne County N. Y. and later moved to West Barre, Orleans County, N. Y. where Phebe died on November 26, 1860. Joseph died February 27, 1867 at Lockport, Niagara County, New York. They had the following children: Cornelius, married Cornelia Seely; Jane, married Maurice Carpenter; Smith Payne; Elizabeth, married a Huyck; Mary Frances, married Grinnell; George; Cyrus; and Thomas Fenner. Any assistance greatly appreciated. W. R. Knoop wrknoop@aol.com

    3. Thanks Jim and Khati, I worked the 2000 census, mainly to see what these guys had to go through. Let me tell ya'll, Uncle Sam makes things way to complicated, and when you take that to the common guy down the street? Well, I see now why there are some errors in our Census research. People are not always cooperative with a name, much less relationships, etc. Wes in GA Jim Miller wrote: > >Census & Taxation Records : U.S. Census Abbreviations > >All credit given to Kathi_Reid for Posting: > > Topic US Census Abbreviations Ever wonder about the meaning of some of >the abbreviations found in the US census? 2. I found a note in the family papers with a bit more information on William Emmett Payne's children of my previous post. Annie married 2nd a man named Carver. Dorothy married a man named Davenport. Rush had 8 girls, one was Charlotte the model. He died in his 30's in New Orleans, about 1920-25. Rex was wounded in WW1, crippled in one leg. He opened the first self-serve grocery store in Laurel MS. I hope someone out there recognizes these families. I would love to share the story of Tom with some family member. Marilyne Short Payne

    2. Sharon Stephens
    3. hi, Payne researchers, I am seeking info on Elijah Payne, who was in Carroll Co., MO in 1840. His wife was Kasiah (Keziah) Phipps. Their 12 children were: Jasper, Joseph, Mary, James L., Martha, Daniel, George, Lucy, Oliver, McWilliams, Missouri, and Rachel. Other places they lived were Chariton Co., MO, Hopkins Co., KY, Johnson Co.,AR, and Greene Co.,MO. Elijah died circa 1879 and is supposedly buried in Union Grove Cemetery south of Tintown (near Bolivar) in Polk Co.,MO. Can anyone help me with these folks? I found other Paynes living around Elijah...Huston R., Larkin, George, Archibald, and Daniel. Can't put the puzzle together...but surely they were related SOMEHOW!? Thanks in advance for all your help! Loving a good mystery, Sharon anglofile32000@yahoo.com __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! 2. Can anyone make any connection to the following sons and daughters of William Emmett Payne b 25 Apr 1856, Sabine Co TX, and Elizabeth "Bettie" Larkin b Oct 1858, AL? Nine children all born TX, Sabine?, Orange?, and resided Trinity Co. 1900-1910 census. Laura Dec. 1878; Annie Aug 1884, married a railroad man (?); Rush Feb 1887; Henry Earl 6 Jul 1889 (my ex-husband's father); Dorothy "Dot" Dec 1891, schoolteacher in NV (?); Rex Mar 1894; Pearl Sept 1896; Tom Jan 1899, a long interesting family story on this "military" character who had 3 children; and Johnny or Tommy (barely legible on census) 1902, who could perhaps be a son of one of the older daughters. Either Rush or Rex moved to Louisiana, owned and operated a grocery store, one daughter was a successful model, clothing catalogs etc. Sorry, I have no married names for the daughters included here. 1. There was NO Arthur Paine in RI in 1655 - A Note
    2. Robert Gerrity
    3. A General Note & for the Archives: The importance of looking at original records wherever & whenever possible can not be too highly stressed. This point was brought home to me when I was reading a recent issue of the NEHGS' GREAT MIGRATION NEWSLETTER (10:2 April-June 2001). This "peak behind the research scenes" by the Great Migration Project's chief writer, Robert Charles Anderson FASG, usually presents highly important background information to determining whether facts are facts. In this issue, Anderson focused on published lists of freemen in RI, in particular the very first one. What he wrote eliminated one of my "possible" fathers for Ralph Pain of Newport, Providence & Freetown MA! Here are excerpts of what Anderson wrote: "The single most extensive compilation of Rhode Island freemen in the seventeenth century is "The Roll of Freemen of the Colony of every Town," dated 1655 [RICR 1:299-302 {edited by Bartlett}]. This list contains the names of 2476 men, of whom 42 were from Providence, 71 from Portsmouth, 96 from Newport and 38 from Warwick." Does "this list contain precisely those men who had been admitted to freemanship in or prior to 1655, and were alive and not disenfranchised in the same year. At first glance...Yes." From the way the list is published, "the simplest explanation would be that the list was carefully compiled in and as of 1655, that a few additional, newly-minted, freemen were added in 1656, and that no further changes were made [to it] thereafter." Not so, Bucky! Some obvious discrepancies led Anderson to "look at the original of the list, rather than the printed version. The first surprise is that names were not entered in alphabetic order, and that Bartlett had rearranged them, crudely, in preparing them for publication. The few names listed under "1656" were at the ends of the Portsmouth and Newport section, but again Bartlett had alphabetized the six Newport names of 1656." The 1655 list is all in one hand and in the same ink - the clerk entered the list at one sitting. The 1656 names, where appended, are in a different ink. More importantly, misreadings by Bartlett were readily seen. "In two cases in the Portsmouth section of the list, the given name of the freeman was published incorrectly: 'Arthur Paine' should be 'Antho: Paine' and 'Fred. Sheffield' should be 'Icob. Sheffield' [i.e. Ichabod].... And in one instance, also in Portsmouth, the surname is wrong: 'Thomas Warde' should be 'Tho[mas] Waite.' " Bartlett also wasn't sure to which towns some names should be ascribed and omitted one name because it had been erased and appeared in another town. When individuals are looked at, in terms of other known records, there are any number of men for whom this 1655 record is the last mention of them. But were they really there in 1655? A good many probably weren't. One we can be sure of is "Anthony Paine (published as 'Arthur Paine'). Like so many others, he arrived in Portsmouth in 1638, where he was recorded infrequently. He made his will in 1649, and was dead within a year [Portsmouth Town Records 384-86]. He had two daughters and no sons [Austin 144], so there was NO Anthony Paine available to be in the 1655 list." Anderson presents other, similar examples. "For Portsmouth...the list contains many names of men who HAD been freemen there at an earlier date, but not in 1655." Whether the town clerk misunderstood the instructions or the colony clerk used outdated lists or whether it was some combination, only additional research can tell. But to look at the 1655 RI freemen list and accept as "fact" that So & So, who is listed, was actually alive and a voter that year is no longer possible. Arthur Paine was really Anthony Paine, and he'd been dead for 6 years! More information about the GM Newsletter is available at the NEHGS web-site. The Society now has name search versions of the first 3 volumes of The Great Migration Begins, and of the entire run of its magazine the Register available for members. Check it out! Regards to all. 1. Payne Family DNA Sampling
    2. Joe Payne
    3. For those of us participating in the DNA testing I thought the following may be of interest. It comes from the Rootsweb Review from Ancestry.com. 2e. MYFAMILY.COM AND RELATIVE GENETICS PARTNER TO DELIVER GENETIC GENEALOGICAL SERVICE ---------------------------------------------------------- MyFamily.com and Relative Genetics, a world-class genomics laboratory and a leader in establishing definitive biologic relationships through DNA testing and analysis, have entered an exclusive partnership to distribute the Ancestry(TM) GenetiKit(TM), the most complete and extensive DNA test available. The partnership and new product combine traditional genealogy with the latest technology making it easier to answer the question: "Where did I come from?" The Ancestry GenetiKit will be introduced at GENTECH, the conference for genealogy and technology in Boston, Massachusetts, on 25 January 2002. The test will be available exclusively through Ancestry.com, a member of the MyFamily.com network, on 25 January and can be ordered online for $219.00. The home collection kit comes with a swab to painlessly and easily collect a sample of cells from the inside of your cheek, which is then returned to the laboratory where DNA testing is completed within a few weeks. The Ancestry GenetiKit can be used to test for paternal-line relationships through a test known as the Surname Test or Y Chromosome Test. The Surname test analyzes twenty-three markers making it the highest resolution commercial Y-chromosome test in the world. These markers identify the provider's genetic identity inherited from his ancestors. Other tests available using the GenetiKit include the Mitochondrial DNA Native American Haplotype Test and Mitochondrial DNA Sequencing Test used for establishing maternal relationships. The genetic identity of the provider will be compared against a database of over nineteen thousand DNA samples, the world's largest database of genetic genealogical samples. The results that will be reported to the provider include an analysis of the provider's personal genetic identity and a comparison with surnames contained in the database to determine relationships. Ancestry.com users can use their personal genetic identity to find other Ancestry.com users who are living relatives. Furthermore, if a match is determined with another sample in the database, the provider will receive ancestral information on that match including a name, place, and date. "By gathering genetic data from populations throughout the world, Relative Genetics and The Sorenson Molecular Genealogy Foundation, in conjunction with development from the BYU Center for Molecular Genealogy, are building the world's largest database of genetic populations. These populations are sorted by place and time so finding out where and when your genetic ancestors may have lived is easier," said Dr. Scott Woodward, PhD., Professor of Microbiology and faculty member of the Molecular Biology Program at Brigham Young University, Laboratory Director of Relative Genetics. Genealogy has traditionally been done using records of people's names in association with dates and places. Almost every genealogist knows that name changes and dates are not recorded and places can be forgotten. Ancestry.com and Relative Genetics have teamed up to help fill in the missing pieces. "You carry within your DNA a record of your ancestry," said Tom Stockham, CEO of MyFamily.com. "The Ancestry GenetiKit test accesses the only record that never gets lost; your genetic heritage, DNA. By combining those DNA records with more than 1.5 billion names we currently have available online, we will offer our customers an unsurpassed ability to build family pedigrees and establish relationships between distant relatives." For more information on the Ancestry GenetiKit, go to: http://www.ancestry.com/rd/redir.asp?sourceid=1644&targetid=3346

Hello everyone, I just wanted to inform the lists that I have updated the DNA project participants list at http://home.earthlink.net/~ppayne1203/page5.html I want to ensure that I have not left anyone out, so if you intended to be represented please check the page and let me know if you do not see your ancestor represented by the identifier I should have assigned for you. Many of us have already returned our sample to the lab for testing and we should expect to see some results coming back in about one month. The list is organized by the residence/location of each ancestor represented in the study- a total of 30 participants broken down as follows: Ancestors from: JERSEY in the Channel Islands: 2 participants (with one or two more possible) VIRGINIA: 10 participants (including a descendant of Thomas Payne and Mary Montagu of Westmoreland County!) MARYLAND: 6 participants (including a descendant of Flayl Payne) MASSACHUSETTS: 3 participants (2 descendants of Thomas Paine and Mary Snow; and 1 descendant of William Paine and Rose Adcocke) NEW YORK: 1 participant (descendant of Roswell Payne) CARIBBEAN ISLANDS: 1 participant (a descendant of the PAYEN family) VERMONT: 1 participant TENNESSEE: 3 participants GEORGIA: 1 participant NORTH CAROLINA: 1 participant UNSPECIFIED: 1 participant Regards, Patrick

    1. Re: Nancy Payne
    2. Would any of you good folks consider helping me find information about this ancestor. She was born 3 May 1817 in Columbia, Adams County, Ill and died 27 January 1854 in Columbus, Illinois. I believe her father was Bennett D. Payne and her mother was Mary Margaret (Polly) McKensey. She married James A. Bell about 1835 and they were early pioneers in Fontenelle, Nebraska. As a matter of fact, they retained Logan Fontenelle (rather famous Indian) to help them establish a home site in Nebraska. Their children, that I know of, were William Alexander Bell born 7 April 1844; Nancy Carrie Bell born 8 April 1846 and John L. Bell born about 1842. Many thanks, Ellen
