There is a will for a Phillip Johnston in Shelby Co. Kentucky that was probabted on 17 July 1798. In this will, he gives land in Hardin Co. Ky. to his daughter, Elizabeth Payne. Does anyone know who Elizabeth (Johnston) Paynes husband was. I am descended from Bennet Dixon Payne who was born in Va. and died in Jefferson County Ky. Family stories say that his parents were a George Payne, or Henry Payne, or a Harry Payne that was married to an Elizabeth Johnson. I have been unable to locate any trace of this family. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

My great-great Grandparents were Elvis Berry Turns and Louisa Emma PAYNE. I am trying to track down Louisa's parents. The TURNS family came from Butler and Ohio Co, KY, before coming to Texas. According to the 1900 Ellis County Texas Census, Louisa was born in July 1861 KY. Her parents were also born in KY. So, going backwards, I went to 1880 KY on the chance that she and Elvis TURNS were not yet married or in Texas. (Their eldest child, my great-grandmother was not born until July 1883). I found in 1880 Ohio Co, Ky (living near several TURNS families) was the family of DURRUM PAYNE age 48 & wife Harriet age 50. Daughter EMMA 18. Other children were Alfred 17, Joseph 11, Milton 9, and Virgil 6. In 1870 I found this same family, living near more TURNS families. Listed as DURREN PAYNE age 36 & Harriett age 38 with Elizabeth 15, Richard P 14, LOUISA E 10, Alfred P 8, and James T 11/12. This HAS to be Louisa Emma that married Elvis Turns. But I still want to be 100% before I put them in my family tree. In 1860 Warren Co, KY I found DURHAM H. PAYNE 30, and Harriett 25, with Elizabeth 8, Richard 6, and Ann 4. In 1850 Warren Co, Ky I found a John B. PAYNE family age 49, wife Elizabeth 55, Mary E 21, DERAM (?) age 18, John W 16, Manasah W. 13, Hiram Hart 23, and Frances Davenport 12. Nearby was the family of James G. Hammond, with a Derram PAYNE 19 living with them. These Derram/Deram are both near the right age, so I don't know which to claim, if either. Or could it be the same person, just listed in two households. (If he worked on the Hammond farm by day, but lived at home, he could be listed on both households by mistake. ??) Does anyone recognize this family??? ANY help appreciated. Thanks Pat

Hello everyone, I am posting this message a day earlier than I had originally intended due to a change in my work schedule. I have been in contact with Relative Genetics to inform them that all test samples that can be expected from this round of testing have been received by them. I believe they received the last remaining sample last week and they have indicated that it would take about 6 weeks to test all samples. I take that to mean that we should have our results within 5 weeks, but it may be much sooner than that as the earlier samples have already been tested. It may not take them long at all to process the one or two remaining that were recently received. Our contact has indicated that she would check on this for us. The test results, when available, will be mailed to me for distribution to our participants. I will also make the results, along with the analysis provided by the lab, available at http://home.earthlink.net/~ppayne1203/page5.html so that anyone interested can view them. I want to stress the importance that once this initial Payne family DNA "baseline" database is established, that any male Payne descendant at any time in the future (be it 1 month, 1 year, or 100 years from now), can have their own DNA compared with the initial database. Any DNA lab can perform this testing. However, since Relative Genetics does not release or share their information with other labs (without the consent of participants) only they would be able to perform a complete analysis and add future samples received to our initial database. Having said that, regardless of the testing facility used, the "DNA markers" found in future testing will be the same as those used in our testing and can be readily compared with that information alone. It just won't be as detailed as the report that Relative Genetics could provide. I will continue to volunteer in this effort by assisting anyone wishing to have the testing performed. I can be reached at ppayne1203@earthlink.net Finally, advances are rapidly being made in DNA research and the number of markers that can be identified has already grown significantly. At the time of our testing, the lab was able to analyze 14 separate markers (2 more than previous testing provided in other family DNA testing projects). However, labs are now able to identify and test for a number of newly found markers. In general, the greater the number of markers identified better accuracy. The benefit of this to those of us who have already been tested is that we can always have Relative Genetics re-test our samples to include these new markers should that become desirable as our initial project expands, as I am sure it will. Once we are able to establish sound scientific data indicating relationships between branches of the Payne family, it is bound to encourage others to find their own place in our genetic pedigree chart. By combining this genetic pedigree with traditional genealogy, I am confident that knowledge of the Payne family will grow tremendously and solve many of the mysteries we have been confronted with previously. I look forward to sharing our results with you as soon as they are available. Sincerely, Patrick Payne

All @home addresses have been changed. Knowing what it was changed TO is the problem. This is the result of the collapse of Excite@home. In some locations, the local cable company was able to save the service, as in Fort Wayne. My address changed to indicate it now is under the control of Comcast Cable Service. If you know where he lives, see if you can find a city or county Website that might give you a clue as to what his address might be IF some local company saved the cable service for its customers. if not -- good luck. Could someone tell me if they happen to know of an Amos PAINE/PAYNE from Moultonborough,NH. I don't have very much to go on other than that he is listed in the 1790 thru 1830 census. He might have had either a brother or father named John. I certainly do hope someone has a lead for me. Thank You Birde mailto:Birde@bigfoot.com

Dear Paynes: I am searching for information on John M. Payne b. in 1815 in TN. He was married to Louisa S. Dodd b. in 1826 in TN. He had 2 sons to a previous wife (unknown) James S. b. 1835 and Daniel b. 1839 both in TN. The family moved from TN to MO and appeared in the 1850 Pulaski Co., MO census. They also had 2 children named Lanning living with them. They may have been hers from a previous marriage. I would love to hear from anyone with any connection to this family. Thank You, Beth Calnon becalnon@aol.com

Hello Everyone, Things have been quite on the DNA project front while we have been waiting for all of the samples to arrive at the lab. At the moment, all but a few have arrived and are now in the process of being tested. Once all of the samples have been tested, the lab will release the results. As I get word from the lab, I will keep everyone posted. We have also managed to add a couple of new participants since my last posting. A complete list is available at: http://home.earthlink.net/ppayne1203/page5.html That's all for now, Patrick
