The Paxton family of my interest is that of William Paxton who wed Ruth Sellman in July 1802 in Frederick County, MD. Ruth's pedigree traces back to a Jamestown ancestor. But I have no idea where William came from to Frederick, MD The couple eventually moved to the Tenleytown are of Washington, DC. That is located just inside the district line. In the old census' it is referred to as Washington County, DC. They could have had at least eight children that can be identified. One daughter Althea married Elexious Queen. Another married Jonathan Buckman, another James H. Flower, another married Robert Devine. There is also one who married first a Wolford and second a Chappel. Their sons were John, James, Joseph and Thomas. William is shown on the 1840 census living next door to Elias King. Elias' daughter married Joseph Paxton. In 1850 Ruth was listed as head of household, but there is a notation she had recently died. There is some confusion over this record because Birch funeral home has a Mrs. Paxton dying several months after that. Perhaps this record was for the child Florida Paxton who seems to move from household to house hold as the years passed. Living in the household that same day was a Queen grandson who may have been on a "sleep over" but also counted in his parents household; a girl Florida Paxton; a daughter and her family, husband Robert Devine; and an Ann Selman who was either Ruth's unmarried sister or sister-in-law. In 1860 Ann Selman age 80 was living in the Jonathan Buckman home. And in 1870, there was a boarder in the Robert Devine household named Althea Pedicord which was the name of Ruth (Sellman) Paxton's mother. She had to be a cousin but what degree has not yet been determined. I found one record in the Frederick Co. land records for a Thomas Paxton of York Co. PA who bought 2 town lots in Taneystown. Any clue that might help me extend the line back is appreciated. Margaret Amundson
It is believed that Mary Paxton who m. Robert Divine is not a daughter of William Paxton , but a neice. I have had great difficulty in following and figuring out where the direct lines are. Thomas Selman PAXTON, born in 1830 and who lived and died (1908) in Washington, D.C. (Tenelytown). He was probably born in Frederick County, Maryland where the 1790 County census shows a Thomas who might be his father. Nathaniel and William PAXTON close in age to Thomas and who later lived in Tenelytown were also shown in that census and may be his brothers. Thomas Selman PAXTON was married first to Sarah RILEY born in 1827 and died in 1862 in Washington, D.C. In the 1850 Washington DC Census Mary(Paxton) and Robert Divine are living with Thomas Selman Paxton Family in Tenelytown. On Grant Street there are 3 row houses, wood frame, that are very similar in contruction that Thomas Paxton built, and family lived in. There is a house at the corner of Grant , 37th, Abermarle, and Wisconcin Ave. that I believe to be the Curran House. It has a big porch extending back into Grant St. There is another little frame house set back further on Grant St. that may have been Mahlon Curran's house. We know he lived right around the corner. In the 1910 census his name is reversed. marriages Joseph Paxson = Mary Lusty 20 July 1797 Thomas Paxton = Elizabeth Miller 22 Dec. 1799 William Paxton = Ruth Sellman 23 July 1802 Thomas S.
