Mrs. Jones was a Defiance, Ohio, native who had lived most of her life in Johnson City. She was a daughter of the late John Fred and Bessie Drain Paxton. Mrs. Jones was a graduate of Ohio State University. She was a homemaker. She was a member of Munsey Memorial United Methodist Church. For many years she wrote a regular column on birds for the Johnson City Press. She was also a member of the Lee Herndon Chapter of the Tennessee Ornithological Society. Mrs. Jones was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Monday Club, the American Penwomen and the Dilettantes Book Club. She was the long-time chairwoman for the Johnson City Mayne Williams Public Library. In additon to her parents, Mrs. Jones was preceded in death by her husband, Carl A. Jones Jr., former publisher of Carl A. Jones Newspapers; one brother and two sisters. Surviving are three sons, Tim P. Jones and Carleton A. Jones III, both of Johnson City, and John A. Jones, Unicoi; daughter, Alice J. Torbett, Knoxville; brother, John A. Paxton, Clevelnd, OH; sister, Janet P. Cannon, Cincinnati, OH; sister-in-law, Mrs. H. L. "Buddy" Jones, Bristol; eleven grandchildren, Timothy Derby Jones, Nashville, Courtney Jones Fussell, Memphis, Kathryn J. Link, Johnson City, Erin J. Ross, Greenville, S.C., Lauren Rebecca Jones, Johnson City, Carleton A. Jones IV, Newnan, GA, Sara Kathryn Wible, Charleston, S.C., Jacque Jones Hawks, Nashville, Robert C. Torbett, Glen Ellen, IL, David J. Torbett, Alliance, OH, and Lea Tobett Schwab, Mount Pleasant, N.C.; nine great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. A funeral will be 4 p.m. Sunday, April 27, at Munsey Memorial United Methodist Church. Rev. Ken Henderlight will officiate. Pallbearers will be Steve Fox, Charles Steagall and Mrs. Jones' grandsons-in-law, Gary Schwab, Shawn Fussell, Hardy Link, Andy Ross, Cliff Hawks and Jed Wible. Committal services will be 10 a.m. Monday at Monte Vista Burial Park. Family and friends are asked to meet at Morris-Baker by 9:40 a.m. Monday to go in procession to the cemetery. The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Saturday, April 26, at Morris-Baker.
