My family used both Paxson and Paxton in different generations. I THINK I finally found which Reuben was my 5th great grandfather this afternoon, due to the help of our list manager, Wanda. The early families were Quakers and used the Paxson spelling, living at first in PA, later moving to VA,MD,NC,SC, and OH. I am descended from the ones who moved to Ohio, Noble County (originally a part of Champaign County). Ray Maris has the most correct information at his web site: http://www.gencircles.com/users/marisgen/8/data/2656 but I still have much research to do. He gave me a lot of information and I gave him a little amount and plan to send more, but would like to have it a little more complete. My 4th great grandfather, James Peirce/Pearce/Pierce, spelled his name all three ways on various documents. I have been told that people did not care about correct spelling in the 1800s. Wishing you the best in your search, Anne Thompson Payne (annetp@aol.com) 4th great granddaughter of Margaret Paxson/Paxton Peirce (1801 - 1878).
