    3. Joseph Paxton served as a private in the 50th Regiment of Maryland under Captain McLaughlin during the War of 1812. He does not appear as a family head in the 1820 Maryland census, but beginning with the 1830 Allegany County census he can be followed until his death at age 71 in 1865 in West Virginia. In the Allegany County census for 1840, Joseph had 11 children living at home. While he and his wife were born in Pennsylvania, the children are shown as born in Maryland. Joseph's wife, Susannah, was born about 1802 and died July 1873, also at age 71, in Hampshire County (now Mineral County) West Virginia. Both Joseph and Susannah were buried in a family plot at Philos Cemetery, Westernport, Maryland, across the border from the town of Piedmont, West Virginia.
