Hello List, My name is Pamela and I am researching my maiden name Paxton. I have so far gone back to my Third Great Grandparents James Paxton and Margaret Currie, They were married at Canongate, Edinburgh, Scotland on February 13, 1817. I now know a little more about Margaret and her parents but would like to know more about where and when James Paxton was born and who his parents were? James must have been born between 1890-1895 I would think? I do not know where he was born, as he died before the 1851 census. Could someone please tell me when the first census was held in Scotland? Also what information did the census give in the earlier Censuses? would it have gave me James Paxton's age? James and Margaret Paxton had at least four children to my knowledge. I know the details of their two eldest daughters, Mary Ann/Marion she was the eldest and was born in 1820 in Tranent, East Lothian, Scotland. The nest eldest daughter Agnes was also born in Tranent in 1822. Then they had a daughter named Janet who was born between 1827 and 1829 in Musselburgh, Inveresk, Midlothian, Scotland. But I can not find her on the IGI on Family Search or on the Scotland Peoples Gov website. But she was living with her mother Margaret in 1851 Census. and this is where I found out about her. Then last of all My Great great Grandfather James Ferdinand Douglas Paxton born in Musselburgh, inversk in December 1830? Although there is descrepensys about what his true birth date was. James F. D Paxton married Elizabeth Sharp in September 1855. But James F.D. Paxton and Elizabeth Sharp had one son named George Paxton born in 1850 in Musselburgh. and were living as man and wife in the 1851 Census. They then went on to have six more children all born in Musselburgh. Their Son James Thomas Collier Paxton born in 1860 was my Great Grandfather. Their other childrens names were Peter, Margaret, Arthur, Catherine, and Robert who was about three weeks old when Elizabeth also known as Betsy Paxton died of British Collera at the young age of 37 in September 1867. James T. C. Paxton married Christina Cunningham Ritchie Rodger in May 1884. They had five children. James born 1885 Margaret 1887 Elizabeth/Bessie 1890 Sarah 1893 all born in Musselburgh. Their Youngest William Rodger Paxton was my grandfather born in 1897, he could have possibly been a twin? William Rodger Paxton married Jessie McGrouther in March 1918. My Father William Paxton was born in Edinburgh on February 28/29 1920. He had a brother named John McGrouther Paxton who was born in July 15, 1925 in Edinburgh. Most of my Great great Grandfather James F. D Paxtons sons and he himself were Club Carriers, Professional Golf Players or Club Makers and Golf Ball Makers in the 1881 and 1891 Censuses. his second eldest son Peter Paxton was famous for Professional Golf Player and Club Maker. I have since recently found out through finding Peter Paxton and family in the 1891 Census in Eastbourne, East Sussex, England that my Great great Grandfather James F. D. Paxton commited suicide in August 1891 in Eastbourne, East Sussex. I have sent for his death certificate but have to wait a few days yet to receive it. And I am going to send off and pay for a copy of the news item that someone in Eastbourne, Sussex told me about the Suicide in the local paper there in 1891. So i will have to wait and see what information I get from this article? I do know my great grandmother's name Christina was mentioned. If there is anyone who has seen any of my names mentioned here, that could help me try to find out more about my third Great Grandfather James Paxton i would appriciate some help please.
