She was born April 25, 1912, in Tama, Iowa, the daughter of Amos and Carrie (Isbell) Paxton. She attended Tama public schools. On Nov. 23, 1931, Gretchen was united in marriage to James Leo Doran in Lancaster, Mo. The couple lived most of their married lives in Tama. James passed away Dec. 7, 1957. Shortly thereafter, Gretchen began working as a housekeeper for priests in Dubuque and Clear Lake. In 1969, Gretchen moved with her sister to Manchester and worked for a year at the Mode O' Day store. They continued to make their home in Manchester. Gretchen entered the Monticello Nursing & Rehab Center in 1997, and in 1998 moved to the Good Neighbor Home. Survivors include several nieces, nephews and cousins. Gretchen was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; four brothers, Ethy in infancy, Alba, Frederick and Gordon; and two sisters, Thelma in infancy and Grinnell Carnal. Mass of Christian Burial: 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, St. Mary's Catholic Church, Manchester, by the Rev. Monsignor Ralph Simington. Burial: 3 p.m. Wednesday at St. Patrick's Catholic Cemetery, Tama. Friends may call from 3 to 5 p.m. Tuesday at Leonard-Muller Funeral Home & Crematory in Manchester, with a rosary at 3 p.m., and from 9:30 a.m. to service time Wednesday at the church.
