Paxton Wineland, 72, of LaPorte and formerly of Lake Station, passed away Monday, July 14, 2003, at Rush St. Luke's Presbyterian Medical Center in Chicago after a lengthy illness and battle with cancer. She was born on June 29, 1931, in Shelby and was a member of Jordan Baptist Church in Portage. Jewel loved bluegrass and gospel music. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Garnet Paxton and her parents, Ben and Ophelia Ledford of Shelby, and by one great-grandchild. Jewel was the mother of nine children and leaves to cherish her memory her loving husband of five years, Robert Wineland of LaPorte; a sister, Brenda Gettys; an aunt, Marjorie Ashley; six daughters, Ginger and Lee Christakis of Crown Point, Ind., Peggy and Jim Powell of Shelby, and Betty and Lonnie Lawson, Patsy and Gary Ingram, Sherry and Manuel Santana and Donna and Howard Woodard, all of Lake Station; three sons, Tony and Sherry Paxton of Weaver, Ala., and Marty and Kimberlee Paxton and Rob and Candie Paxton, all of Lake Station; stepchildren, Robert and Kristie Wineland and Jamie and Linda Wineland, all of Valparaiso, Ind., and Susan and Ross Schoff and Patti and Mark Kroening, all of LaPorte and Sandie and Al Ayala of Hobart, Ind.; 31 grandchildren; 15 stepgrandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; seven stepgreat-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends. The funeral will be Friday at 10 a.m. at Christopher Funeral Home, 1307 Central Ave., Lake Station, with the Rev. Jerry Vernon officiating. Interment will be at Graceland Cemetery in Valparaiso.
