He was born July 4, 1943, in Alleghany County, a son of Phyllis Tucker Paxton of Covington and the late Howard B. Paxton Sr. Mr. Paxton retired from Hercules Inc. in 1992 after 30 years of service. He served in the Virginia Army National Guard for 22 years before retiring as a sergeant. In 2003, after 40 years of service he retired from the Boiling Springs Fire Department and Rescue Squad, where he had served as a past fire chief and president and was among the first in the squad to receive EMT status. Mr. Paxton was also a former coach of Little League Baseball and Youth League Football in the area. He was a member of Highland Chapel Christian Church. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Brenda Lockhart Paxton of Covington; two sons, Dwaine Paxton and Ronnie Paxton and his wife, Sandy, all of Covington; his brother, Robert Paxton and his wife, Violet, of Covington; five grandchildren, Shane Byer, Justin Paxton, Kyle Paxton, Ben Paxton and Samantha Paxton, all of Covington; a special friend, Carla Scruggs of Covington; a former daughter-in-law, Theresa Harmon of Covington; and several nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be conducted Thursday at 2 p.m. at the Arritt Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. J. B. Broughman and the Rev. William Bess officiating. Interment will be in Lone Star Cemetery with graveside rites conducted by the Boiling Springs Fire Department and Rescue Squad. Active pallbearers will be Marshall Deffinbaugh, Butch Malcolm, Otis Harmon, James Lockhart, Wendell Paxton, Walter Ridgeway, Joe Weikle, Doug Mattox, Junior Brookman and Ernie Cleavenger. Alternate pallbearers will be Bill Lockhart and Ranson Tucker. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Boiling Springs Fire Department and Rescue Squad. Friends may pay their respects any time at Arritt Funeral Home. The family will receive friends this evening at Arritt Funeral Home from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. It was Junie's request that family and friends dress in casual attire for the visitation and funeral service as if they were coming to visit him. The family suggests that memorial donations in Mr. Paxton's name be made to the Boiling Springs Fire Department and Rescue Squad Building Fund.
