All- To introduce myself to this mailing list, I am and have been stuck for quite some time on my gg-grandfather, William Charles Paxton. We have a family bible that was started with his marriage to my gg-grandmother, Mary Eliza Gager on December 5, 1848 in New Jersey. This bible has a number of inaccuracies, and his name is written as both William Charles and Charles William. His birthday is recorded as March 16, 1792 and date of death is July 4, 1878, but we have been unable to find any other record of either event. On one census, he is reported to be a native of Pennsylvania and another census reports he is a native of Louisiana. Family members believed that he spent his declining years at Sailor's Snug Harbor situated on Staten Island, New York, but they responded in the late 1950's that they had no record of him. The information that we received from the State of New Jersey Returns of Marriages indicates that his parents were Peter and Catherine Paxton, but we have not found a record of a Peter Paxton living at that time. He also indicates that he is a widow at the time of this marriage, so there may be other children of his first marriage. Family stories report that he may have run away from home and taken to the sea when he was about 14. We have found a number of records beginning in April of 1836 relating to his varied involvement in a number of ship registrations in New Orleans. When asked about his family by his children, he is reported to have responded that he was from a "good family in Western Pennsylvania" and would say nothing further. Pictures of Captain Paxton appear to indicate or reveal strong American Indian facial features. If anyone has found any information that might help us track down any further information on Captain William Charles Paxton, we would greatly appreciate it! Other names I am researching include Enright, Gager, Horan, Ludwick, Mattingly and Spaulding. I am really enjoying all the information that is now on the Internet, I haven't done any research in almost 12 years and am amazed how much information can be found without entering the door of a library or other public building!
