Hi Maranda, I also have a similar Paxton, 1 Mary PAXTON b: 1822 MD d: Aft. 1880 . +Robert M. C. DIVINE b: 1821 Ireland m: November 18, 1848 Washington DC d: Aft. 1880 ........ 2 Mary L. DIVINE b: November 1850 Tenley Town, Washington DC d: May 1897 ............ +Joseph M. CURRAN b: January 1850 MD m: July 20, 1871 Washington DC I found an early Paxton marriage Joseph Paxton Susanna Dennis Sept. 5 1819. I put it out to the list to see if anyone had any connection to these Paxtons. a while later I heard from someone( I can't find the note) that they had 13 boys and moved to WV. Then awhile after that I received an apology, they had found there was a sister. It wasn't Mary but if they could find 1 sister there could be more. Last year my husband and I went to his great grandparents house that is at the corner of Grant St. NE. He had been there as a boy when 2 maiden aunts still lived there. I noted on Grant St.there were some really old looking wooden frame townhouses. I put it out to the list. Low and behold I got a response that Bill's great grandfather Thomas Paxton had built 3 houses on Grant St. He had never heard of the Divine or Curran families. I thoughtr there had to be a connection. so I sent him my info. Just last week he emailed me again. Let me know if there is a connection please. Nan > William PAXTON b. abt. 1777 in Baltimore, MD, married Ruth SELMAN on > July 23, 1802, in Frederick County, MD. He may have lived in Emmitsburg. > The SELMANs came from Anne Arundel County and seem to be well documented. > Not so for William PAXTON and his ancestors. > William's father may have been Samuel PAXTON and his mother Mary > FERGUSON, both of Frederick County, > I am trying to confirm this and find other ancestors of William. > > Thanks: > Bill > [email protected] 1850 Census DC "West of 7th Street Turnpike, P.264" 7272 Ruth A, Paxton (now dead) 66F MD Ann Selman 70F MD. Thomas Paxton 21M Gardener & farmer MD. Florida Paxton 9F Co Wash DC Robert M.C. Devine Wheelwright 27M Ireland Mary Devine 30F MD. Thomas Queen 12M Co Wash DC My attempt at analyzing household: 1. Ruth A. Paxton was Ruth Selman b. 1784 who married William Paxton in 1802. 2. Ann Selman - probably a sister-in law, since no record that Ruth had a sister Ann. 3. Thomas Paxton was the youngest son of Ruth and William, born when Ruth was 43. (my g grandfather, Thomas Selman) 4. Florida Paxton - maybe a grandchild and orphaned or just living with Ruth. 5. Robert M.C. Devine & 6. Mary Devine - my guess is that Mary and Robert had been married less than 2 years and she was pregnant. Mary was probably related to William and Ruth in some way, staying at Ruth's home at the time of the 1850 census. Their child Mary was probably born after the census was taken. 7. Thomas Green - The Greens were related in some way. Maybe same situation as Florida Paxton. William (b. abt. 1777) and Ruth (b. 1784) had five children: Altha, John S., James Austin, Joseph and Thomas S.. Joseph was born in 1826 so he could not be the father of Mary b. 1822. These siblings, all about Mary's age were probably cousins of Mary which would account for Ruth taking Mary and her husband, Robert Devine into her home. Maybe if more turns up about William, it may show that he had a brother Joseph whom he named his son after. Ruth Selman's ancestors seem to be well documented. Not so for William. His father was probably Samuel Paxton of Emitsburg, Md. - maybe also the father of Joseph the father of Mary. I have tried to learn more from the very active group [email protected] mail group, but with little success. If you find anything that will add to the puzzle, I would appreciate your passing it on. -- Researching Bowlin, Bumgarner, Curran, Cox, Divine, Dolan, Ellis, Gardner, Greene, Guy, Holland, Hurley, Jones, King, Linebaugh, Marsh, May, Mc Neese, Moody, Oliphant, Pickering ,Phillips, Smith, Thompson.
