    1. Re: [PAXTON-L] Paxton of Wash DC

    3. Hi Maranda: I am researching the same Paxton line and know two other researchers working on it. I am trying to find out if it ties in to Paxtons in Cecil Co., MD. I have searched high and low for a John S. Paxton, Sr., to no avail. There are so many plain "John" Paxtons that it is almost impossible to pinpoint the right one. What I have for the DC Paxton line is as follows: John S. Paxton, Jr., b. 8 June 1814 in DC or MD (conjecture), d. 24 May 1884 Georgetown, Washington, DC, buried Oak Hill Cemetery, Washington, DC, m. Hannah ? c. 1838 (You have supplied the possible last name - Do you have any information on her??) Issue (these are in home with John S. and Hannah in 1850 and 1860 census of Washington, DC, and all the birthdates are conjecture based on the ages of the children given in the census): Mary (1839) E. Amelia (1843) JW or John William(1845) James Walter(1846) Matilda (1849) Emma or Emmor(1851-27 Oct 1896) Samuel (1854) Kate (1856) Esa, Everett (May 1860) - Either Everett was a twin or his name was Josias Everett, because a grave for infant Josias died 29 June 1860, and Hannah died a few days before him. There is also another child, Hannah listed as daughter age 12 in 1870 census Georgetown DC. When Hannah died, John remarried a Sarah E. Neill, but she was married before and I believe that Neill is her married name. Together, they had 1 child, Louis Matthew in 1864, in Washington DC. Louis married 1883 Ellen Delia Carroll. Further, the other researcher tells me that the death certificate for Louis Matthew lists date of death as 14 Nov 1929; residence at time of death was 91 Worcester St., Boston, MA; Wife - Ellen D. Carroll; Age - 65 yrs.; Occupation - Clerk; Birth place - Washington, D.C.; Immediate cause of death - Natural causes (Hypertrophy of the heart and chronic nephritis); Name of Father - John S. Paxton, born in Maryland; Maiden name of mother - Sarah (--0--), born in Maryland; Date of record - 16 Nov 1929; Place of burial - Richmond, VA. Information was given by wife, and she did not know mother's, Sarah's, maiden name, so researcher believes that Sarah was married at least once before she married John, and that Neill was her married name. The wife of Louis, Ellen D., died in 1947 and is buried in Forrest Lawn Cemetery in Richmond. Her death certificate apparently lists her parents as Thomas Carroll of Maryland and ? Littlefool of ?. Now, Littlefool could be Littlefoot, Little Foot, Little Fool, or Littleford - who knows! Confusing at best! 1900 census of Wash D.C. has head of house as Louis M. with wife Lida E. (sic) including children John and Florence, as well as mother Sarah and nephew Charles A. Neill, and 3 boarders. NOW - Here is what I have on my husband's line - note the similarities in names: James Walter Paxton, b. 4/15/1847 (place unknown), d. 10/18/1893, Cecil County, MD m. Laura Elizabeth Lawrence (place of marriage unknown), b. 4/15/1853 or 4/18/1858 (tombstone deteriorated), d. 6/22/1922, Cecil County, MD. Both are buried in Hopewell United Methodist Cemetery, nr. Charles Edward York, b. 1/6/1964, Havre de Grace, Harford Co., MD, living, m. 8/8/1987, Elkton, Cecil Co., MD, Barbara Gayle Mackey, b. 5/18/1962, Wilmington, New Castle Co., DE, living. No issue. 1.a.5. Carla Louise York 1.b. Margery Jackson 2. Elizabeth "Bessie" Paxton m. Oliver T. Narvell, moved to Baltimore, MD, area. Both died prior to 1924. They had 2 children, Verna Narvell m. Kohlhofer and Clarence Narvell m. Elizabeth ?. 3. John R. Paxton m. Lucy, moved to Philadelphia Co., Philadelphia, PA. They had at least 1 daughter, Mildred Paxton, b. c. 1917, d. 11/2/1997 according to obituary from West Chester Daily Local News of 11/4/1997. Mildred married Robert L. Shannon and they had at least 3 children, Nancy Lee, Michael L. and Robert L. (NOTE: This obituary was posted by Wanda on the Paxton-D Digest V97 Issue #80). NOTE: There are several other what I assume are children and/or grandchildren and their spouses listed in a deed recorded among the Land Records of Cecil County in 1924 in order to convey out any remaining interest in a property James Walter Paxton owned at the time of his death. A certain percentage would have passed to Laura, his wife, and a certain percentage to his children upon his death and it would have been necessary for all heirs and heirs at law to join into a conveyance to another party to establish clear title to the property. The deed is signed and recorded 2 years after Laura's death in 1922., moved to Baltimore, MD, area. Both died prior to 1924. They had 2 children, Verna Narvell m. Kohlhofer and Clarence Narvell m. Elizabeth ?. In the 1850 census DC Census, the child James Walter Paxton, is listed as 4 years old; however, in the 1860 census, he is listed as 13 which would go along with the 1847 birthdate I have for our James Walter. Have any of you heard of either of these lines or would have any idea what the heritage of either is or if they are in fact the same line? I make a mental leap of faith - LOL!! - due to the deed I mentioned above since one of the children/grandchildren listed is Hannah J. Todd, widow, and since the mother's name of the Washington group was Hannah and there was apparently a daughter Hannah named for her I was wondering if this might tie in. Many people have told me that there were no Paxtons in Maryland in the 1800s but I know that James Walter first leased property from 1875 until he bought it located in Port Deposit, Maryland, and I know that Grace Paxton Jackson was "always" from Cecil County. If you can give me any further information on this line or on Hannah Burrows/Burroughs/Barrow?? I would really appreciate it.
