She was 84 years old. Born in San Francisco in 1916, Betty Gardner was primarily a watercolor artist who painted for the joy of it and brightened the lives of those who knew her. As a child she studied and travelled in Europe and Asia with her mother, Mildred Paxton, a greeting card designer. She was primarily self taught and one of the most highly regarded exhibitors at the Gulfstream Annual Art Show over the past decade, according to Warren Soper, Chairman of the Gulfstream Art Committee which she had chaired for eight years. In Connecticut she exhibited and studied at the Silvermine Art Guild in New Canaan. In 1990 she founded the Edward and Elizabeth Gardner Foundation which benefits women and children. In lieu of flowers please send donations to the Edward and Elizabeth Gardner Foundation, PO Box 389, Charleston, WV 25322. She is survived by two daughters, Mary Gardner Gates, of Seattle and Janet Gardner Morren, Princeton, NJ; a son, Edward T. Gardner, III; five grandchildren.
