PAXTON CUMBERLAND Gerald E. "Packie"Paxton, 69, of Growdenvale Drive, Cumberland, died Monday, March 6, 2000, at Memorial Hospital. Born on May 15, 1930, at Cumberland, he was the son of the late Garland M. Paxton and Jeannetta (Symons) Paxton. He was also preceded in death by one son, Steven E. Paxton, who died in 1997; and one sister, Nancy McGettigan, who died in 1992; he was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Mr. Paxton was the owner/operator of Packie's Bakery on Virginia Avenue. He retired in 1997, after 28 years of service. He formerly was employed at Brock Scrap and Salvage Co., and employed at Auto Parts Warehouse as a truck driver. He was a member of Potomac Park United Methodist Church, where he was a former Trustee and former Church Treasurer, a life-time member of the Cumberland Lodge 63, B.P.O.E., an Air Force veteran, serving in peace time. He was a graduate of Allegany High School Class of 1947, and attended Strayers Business College in Washington D.C. Surviving are his wife, Shirley L. (Zink) Paxton; three sons, Gregory A. Paxton, Havre de Grace, Thomas L. Paxton, LaVale, Timothy E. Paxton, Cumberland; six grandchildren, Jody L. Merkle and husband Robert, Cumberland, Shannon L. Peck and husband Bruce, Cumberland, Cheryl A. White and husband James, Washington, Pa., Lindsey J. Paxton, Graham A. Paxton, both of Conway, Ark., Zachary M. Paxton, Carpendale, W.Va., Tre A. Peck, Cumberland; and a mother-in-law, June P. Zink, Lions Manor Nursing Home. Friends will be received at the Kight Funeral Home, 309-311 Decatur St., Cumberland, on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home on Thursday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. James L. McMahan officiating. Interment will be at Sunset Memorial Park. The family requests that contributions take the form of donations to the Potomac Park United Methodist Church. Pallbearers will be, David McGettigan, Donald McGettigan, Douglas McGettigan, Mark Wilson, Donnie Gibson and William Paxton. Honorary pallbearers will be Ben Rhodes, Al Comer, Bob Nave, Loy Twigg, Lou Metz, and Mike Hilditch.
