Joseph Paxton served as a private in the 50th Regiment of Maryland under Captain McLaughlin during the War of 1812. He does not appear as a family head in the 1820 Maryland census, but beginning with the 1830 Allegany County census he can be followed until his death at age 71 in 1865 in West Virginia. In the Allegany County census for 1840, Joseph had 11 children living at home. While he and his wife were born in Pennsylvania, the children are shown as born in Maryland. Joseph's wife, Susannah, was born about 1802 and died July 1873, also at age 71, in Hampshire County (now Mineral County) West Virginia. Both Joseph and Susannah were buried in a family plot at Philos Cemetery, Westernport, Maryland, across the border from the town of Piedmont, West Virginia. Jan, I am also looking for a John Paxton, born 1814 in PA. He married a Nancy Shoemaker born 1817 in PA . They lived in Ohio from 1840-47. Iowa from 1847 to 1864. I have found there are alot of John Paxton's, I like you have decided to look at every possibility. Boyd Boyd Paxton bpaxton001@aol.com
Hi Boyd, I'll keep my eyes open for your John Paxton while looking for mine if you'll do the same for me. My John Paxton, like I said, was born in 1825 West Virginia/ Virginia?, married Isabella Falls in Greene County, TN. They moved on to Dade County, Georgia, then to DeKalb County, AL, up to Champaign Cty, Illinois and ultimately lived out the remainder of their lives in Pawnee Cty, Kansas. They had 6 sons, 4 who grew into manhood, Albert, James, William, and Jesse. A "Robert" died in his youth and another son died in infancy. When Isabella died in 1976 John remarried 3 more times in a very short period of time after Isabella's death but remained in Kansas. Good luck to you in your search. I'm beginning to think the name John Paxton was almost as common back then as John Smith or John Doe today. Jan BPAXTON001@aol.com wrote: Jan, I am also looking for a John Paxton, born 1814 in PA. Thanks for that information Margaret. However I don't see a connection. My John Paxton was born in 1825 and married an Isabella Falls in Greeneville, TN in 1854. The 1840 Census for Washington Co., District of Columbia shows a John Paxton listed directly below William. Living in the house hold are at least 3 grown males including himself. What I have been able to determine from the various marriage records for Paxton women is the couple had at least 8 and possibly nine children. I would look at your families names and see if the name Selman is used for a middle name. My reason is that the Selman family was an early family in Maryland and may have been used as a middle name or given name. The John Paxton on the 1840 census does not appear again. So he either died and is buried in the Methodists Cemetery [we know several burials took place before the ground was deeded] or he moved. If I know who the father of Florida Paxton the girl on the 1850 census was, it might be she was his daughter. I will work on that when I have time. See was living in different households over time.

The early families were Quakers and used the Paxson spelling, living at first in PA, later moving to VA,MD,NC,SC, and OH. I am descended from the ones who moved to Ohio, Noble County (originally a part of Champaign County). Ray Maris has the most correct information at his web site: http://www.gencircles.com/users/marisgen/8/data/2656 but I still have much research to do. He gave me a lot of information and I gave him a little amount and plan to send more, but would like to have it a little more complete. My 4th great grandfather, James Peirce/Pearce/Pierce, spelled his name all three ways on various documents. I have been told that people did not care about correct spelling in the 1800s. Wishing you the best in your search, Anne Thompson Payne (annetp@aol.com) 4th great granddaughter of Margaret Paxson/Paxton Peirce (1801 - 1878).
Hello Margaret, I was wondering about your post concerning William and Ruth Paxton. You said they had up to 8 children and you mentioned a JOHN Paxton. Do you know where this John fits in in the pecking order of the family? I am researching a John Paxton born in 1825 supposedly in West VIrginia, but I know there are parts of West Virginia close to Frederick Maryland and so I was just wondering. When was your John Paxton of William and Ruth born and do you know anything else about him? If he is not my John Paxton, maybe you can help me eliminate him from further study.
