Where to begin.... My family has been working on different aspects of the family tree for years, but I was never interested until they showed me I could do it on computer and incorporate photos and so on. It is addictive!!! I am researching my grandmothers side (Mitchell's, Laird's Zickefoose) and my grandfathers side. I have been able to find a lot on the Paxton side, but could always use more information!!! If anyone is interested I have transcribed the newspaper articles "Paxton Chronicles" that were written by Dahle. My grandfather is: Edward Franklin Paxton, b. 12-1-1920 (Glencoe, OK) Charlie Ira Paxton, b. 9-6-1888 (Kingman, KS) Frank Philander Paxton, b. 10-10-1858 (Richman, VA) Samuel A. Paxton, b. 1820 (Rockbridge County, VA) John Paxton, b. 8-9-1797 (Rockbridge County, VA) Samuel Paxton, b. 3-16-1766 (Rockbridge County, VA) Thomas Paxton, b. 1720 (Ireland) Thomas Paxton, b. before 1700 (Ireland) Samuel Paxton, b. 1670 (Ireland) James Paxton, b. about 1640 (England or Scotland)
Audee Your Sarah may be related to my Amos Paxton, born Dec 1, 1804 in Louden County, Virginia, his parents were from Lancaster County, PA. I have been unable to find any other information about his parents. Amos is found in Jefferson County living on Short Creek in the 1820's near Mount Pleasant. According to family tradition Amos became acquainted with a Sarah DeArmond and later went west to Warren County, Ohio with David DeArmond. David later married Sarah Paxton who may be a sister to Amos. Amos married Nancy Bowser on 13 March 1828 in Ohio. Amos later migrated to Iowa where his first wife died. In 1865 a schoolteacher looking for a job turned out to be Sarah DeYarmon Crowley's son. She lived in southern Iowa and her husband had passed on. Amos and Sarah became reacquainted and married on 17 sept 1865. John Crowley later married Margaret Paxton, a grandaughter of Amos. Amos died 15 Jan 1886 and is buried in the Montour, Iowa cemetery. Sarah went back to southern Iowa to be near her children. Hi. I am struggleing with this family I THINK. I have a Mary Paxton that married a James H. Johnson in Knox County, Ohio in 1823. Can this be the Mary that had a brother Samuel. She named a son Samuel P. Johnson. The family was in Fairfield County in 1850. Daughter Jane (Jennie) is my great grandmother. She was born about 1844 to James and Mary Paxton Johnson. Mary was supposedly born in Pennsylvania about 1804. We think she was the daughter of a Samuel Paxton who also had a son named Samuel, but have no hard proof. This is my last line that is giving me all kinds of trouble. Do you have any information??????? Thanks, Ann ----- Original Message ----- From: DC & Alice Allen <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, October 20, 1999 3:23 PM Subject: [PAXTON-L] PAXTON/Franklin Co. It's interesting to note that my GGGGrandfather was named Samuel Paxton who had brothers John, William, and James and sisters Grace, Jane, and Mary. But my Samuel was born in PA in 1782 and died in McConnellsville, Ohio in 1865. I have his only wife named Martha Kerr who died in 1821 in PA. His brother John died became a Doctor and married Sallie Slemmons and stayed in PA. His brother William became a minister and married Jane Dunlop and also stayed in PA. I don't have any information on his brother James although I suspect he also stayed in PA. Grace married John Coughey in PA. Jane married Joseph McGinley and stayed in PA. I don't know what happened to sister Mary. So many of the Paxton's shared common names it makes it all the more difficult to track down correct information. I wish you luck and if I come across anything I'll be sure to share it with you and all the other Paxton researchers out there. It's been a while since I posted my Paxtons, and since we have some new members, this seems like as good a time as any. Samuel Paxton was married in Franklin Co. OH in 1823 to Amy Wilcox, daughter of Francis Wilcox. The marriage application I copied years ago stated that Samuel's father was dead, his mother gave her permission for the marriage. Unfortunately neither parent was named, and many of us have been looking for more years than we care to think about for more information on his family. Samuel had brothers John & James, and a sister Mary that we know of. Samuel died in 1849 in Franklin Co., Amy married Samuel's brother James later on, 1850 I believe, and that marriage later ended in divorce. Anyone else struggling with this family? Alice Allen
