    3. Hi Maranda: I am researching the same Paxton line and know two other researchers working on it. I am trying to find out if it ties in to Paxtons in Cecil Co., MD. I have searched high and low for a John S. Paxton, Sr., to no avail. There are so many plain "John" Paxtons that it is almost impossible to pinpoint the right one. What I have for the DC Paxton line is as follows: John S. Paxton, Jr., b. 8 June 1814 in DC or MD (conjecture), d. 24 May 1884 Georgetown, Washington, DC, buried Oak Hill Cemetery, Washington, DC, m. Hannah ? c. 1838 (You have supplied the possible last name - Do you have any information on her??) Issue (these are in home with John S. and Hannah in 1850 and 1860 census of Washington, DC, and all the birthdates are conjecture based on the ages of the children given in the census): Mary (1839) E. Amelia (1843) JW or John William(1845) James Walter(1846) Matilda (1849) Emma or Emmor(1851-27 Oct 1896) Samuel (1854) Kate (1856) Esa, Everett (May 1860) - Either Everett was a twin or his name was Josias Everett, because a grave for infant Josias died 29 June 1860, and Hannah died a few days before him. There is also another child, Hannah listed as daughter age 12 in 1870 census Georgetown DC. When Hannah died, John remarried a Sarah E. Neill, but she was married before and I believe that Neill is her married name. Together, they had 1 child, Louis Matthew in 1864, in Washington DC. Louis married 1883 Ellen Delia Carroll. Further, the other researcher tells me that the death certificate for Louis Matthew lists date of death as 14 Nov 1929; residence at time of death was 91 Worcester St., Boston, MA; Wife - Ellen D. Carroll; Age - 65 yrs.; Occupation - Clerk; Birth place - Washington, D.C.; Immediate cause of death - Natural causes (Hypertrophy of the heart and chronic nephritis); Name of Father - John S. Paxton, born in Maryland; Maiden name of mother - Sarah (--0--), born in Maryland; Date of record - 16 Nov 1929; Place of burial - Richmond, VA. Information was given by wife, and she did not know mother's, Sarah's, maiden name, so researcher believes that Sarah was married at least once before she married John, and that Neill was her married name. The wife of Louis, Ellen D., died in 1947 and is buried in Forrest Lawn Cemetery in Richmond. Her death certificate apparently lists her parents as Thomas Carroll of Maryland and ? Littlefool of ?. Now, Littlefool could be Littlefoot, Little Foot, Little Fool, or Littleford - who knows! Confusing at best! 1900 census of Wash D.C. has head of house as Louis M. with wife Lida E. (sic) including children John and Florence, as well as mother Sarah and nephew Charles A. Neill, and 3 boarders. NOW - Here is what I have on my husband's line - note the similarities in names: James Walter Paxton, b. 4/15/1847 (place unknown), d. 10/18/1893, Cecil County, MD m. Laura Elizabeth Lawrence (place of marriage unknown), b. 4/15/1853 or 4/18/1858 (tombstone deteriorated), d. 6/22/1922, Cecil County, MD. Both are buried in Hopewell United Methodist Cemetery, nr. Port Deposit, Cecil County, MD. Known children of James Walter Paxton and Laura Elizabeth Lawrence: 1. Grace Paxton, b. 7/23/1883, Cecil Co., MD (as far as we know), d. 3/1970, Cecil Co., MD, m. Roland C. Jackson, b. 1881, Cecil Co., MD, d. 1955, nr. Port Deposit or Craigtown, Cecil Co., MD. They are also buried in Hopewell Cemetery. They had 3 children: a. Josephine b. Bertha c. Charles Mitchell "Buck" Jackson, b. 12/25/1902, Jackson Park, Cecil Co., MD, d. 8/27/1979, Wilmington, DE, buried Hopewell Cemetery, m. 1/31/1924, Cecil Co., MD, Reba Alice Nickle, b. 10/7/1907, Chester Co., PA, Living. No issue. 1.a.5. Carla Louise York 1.b. Margery Jackson 2. Elizabeth "Bessie" Paxton m. Oliver T. Narvell, moved to Baltimore, MD, area. Both died prior to 1924. They had 2 children, Verna Narvell m. Kohlhofer and Clarence Narvell m. Elizabeth ?. 3. John R. Paxton m. Lucy, moved to Philadelphia Co., Philadelphia, PA. They had at least 1 daughter, Mildred Paxton, b. c. 1917, d. 11/2/1997 according to obituary from West Chester Daily Local News of 11/4/1997. Mildred married Robert L. Shannon and they had at least 3 children, Nancy Lee, Michael L. and Robert L. (NOTE: This obituary was posted by Wanda on the Paxton-D Digest V97 Issue #80). NOTE: There are several other what I assume are children and/or grandchildren and their spouses listed in a deed recorded among the Land Records of Cecil County in 1924 in order to convey out any remaining interest in a property James Walter Paxton owned at the time of his death. A certain percentage would have passed to Laura, his wife, and a certain percentage to his children upon his death and it would have been necessary for all heirs and heirs at law to join into a conveyance to another party to establish clear title to the property. The deed is signed and recorded 2 years after Laura's death in 1922., moved to Baltimore, MD, area. Both died prior to 1924. They had 2 children, Verna Narvell m. Kohlhofer and Clarence Narvell m. Elizabeth ?. In the 1850 census DC Census, the child James Walter Paxton, is listed as 4 years old; however, in the 1860 census, he is listed as 13 which would go along with the 1847 birthdate I have for our James Walter. Have any of you heard of either of these lines or would have any idea what the heritage of either is or if they are in fact the same line? I make a mental leap of faith - LOL!! - due to the deed I mentioned above since one of the children/grandchildren listed is Hannah J. Todd, widow, and since the mother's name of the Washington group was Hannah and there was apparently a daughter Hannah named for her I was wondering if this might tie in. Many people have told me that there were no Paxtons in Maryland in the 1800s but I know that James Walter first leased property from 1875 until he bought it located in Port Deposit, Maryland, and I know that Grace Paxton Jackson was "always" from Cecil County. If you can give me any further information on this line or on Hannah Burrows/Burroughs/Barrow?? I would really appreciate it. Thanks, Barbara York ----- Original Message ----- From: "Maranda Ward" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, April 05, 2000 9:55 AM Subject: [PAXTON-L] Paxton of Wash DC : Hello, : I am trying to find the parents of John S Paxton Jr who was in DC and : married Hannah Barrow/Burroughs in 1837. There is a John William Paxton in this cemetery whose death date is the same as my John William's birth date so they may be the same. I don't know where Samuel's sons moved to. I have an obituary for Emma Louise from 1937. She died in Brushtown, PA and Charles, Samuel, and James were still living but it didn't say where. Margaret Jane (my line) moved to Dayton, Ohio around 1900. I have a death date entered for Robert 10/9/52 but I didn't enter a source. My cousin has a very old scrapbook that was our great aunt's and she put obits and other clippings in it. I will look through it and see if I got Robert's death date from there. My father was 15 when his grandmother, Margaret Jane, died and he doesn't remember hearing about other Paxtons living around Dayton. I live in Arizona and use the FHL alot. I've found that they haven't microfilmed enough records for Maryland and I am not experienced enough yet to find a lot of other sources. If I find anything else I'll let you know. Martha

    3. Hi Maranda, I also have a similar Paxton, 1 Mary PAXTON b: 1822 MD d: Aft. 1880 . +Robert M. C. DIVINE b: 1821 Ireland m: November 18, 1848 Washington DC d: Aft. 1880 ........ 2 Mary L. CURRAN b: January 1850 MD m: July 20, 1871 Washington DC I found an early Paxton marriage Joseph Paxton Susanna Dennis Sept. 5 1819. I put it out to the list to see if anyone had any connection to these Paxtons. a while later I heard from someone( I can't find the note) that they had 13 boys and moved to WV. Then awhile after that I received an apology, they had found there was a sister. It wasn't Mary but if they could find 1 sister there could be more. Last year my husband and I went to his great grandparents house that is at the corner of Grant St. NE. He had been there as a boy when 2 maiden aunts still lived there. I noted on Grant St.there were some really old looking wooden frame townhouses. I put it out to the list. Low and behold I got a response that Bill's great grandfather Thomas Paxton had built 3 houses on Grant St. He had never heard of the Divine or Curran families. I thoughtr there had to be a connection. so I sent him my info. Just last week he emailed me again. Let me know if there is a connection please. Ruth A. Paxton was Ruth Selman b. 1784 who married William Paxton in 1802. 2. Ann Selman - probably a sister-in law, since no record that Ruth had a sister Ann. 3. Thomas Paxton was the youngest son of Ruth and William, born when Ruth was 43. (my g grandfather, Thomas Selman) 4. Florida Paxton - maybe a grandchild and orphaned or just living with Ruth. 5. Robert M.C. Devine & 6. Mary Devine - my guess is that Mary and Robert had been married less than 2 years and she was pregnant. Mary was probably related to William and Ruth in some way, staying at Ruth's home at the time of the 1850 census. Their child Mary was probably born after the census was taken. 7. Thomas Green - The Greens were related in some way. Maybe same situation as Florida Paxton. William (b. abt. 1777) and Ruth (b. 1784) had five children: Altha, John S., James Austin, Joseph and Thomas S.. Joseph was born in 1826 so he could not be the father of Mary b. 1822. These siblings, all about Mary's age were probably cousins of Mary which would account for Ruth taking Mary and her husband, Robert Devine into her home. Maybe if more turns up about William, it may show that he had a brother Joseph whom he named his son after. Ruth Selman's ancestors seem to be well documented. Not so for William. His father was probably Samuel Paxton of Emitsburg, Md. - maybe also the father of Joseph the father of Mary. I have tried to learn more from the very active group [email protected] mail group, but with little success. If you find anything that will add to the puzzle, I would appreciate your passing it on. -- Researching Bowlin, Bumgarner, Curran, Cox, Divine, Dolan, Ellis, Gardner, Greene, Guy, Holland, Hurley, Jones, King, Linebaugh, Marsh, May, Mc Neese, Moody, Oliphant, Pickering ,Phillips, Smith, Thompson. I am a descendant of the Paxton of Virginia, the same group that is the subject of the book "The Paxtons", by W.M.Paxton. My Grandfather, Daniel JJames Paxton is listed in there... Looking for more scoop on the Paxtons generally, especially the older lines to Ireland and Scotland. 3. Hello, I am trying to find the parents of John S Paxton Jr who was in DC and married Hannah Barrow/Burroughs in 1837. He was born in MD about 8 June 1814. I am wondering if he was maybe from Fredrick or Carroll county. Can anyone help? I found a John who was age 71 in the 1850 census in Carroll county, but I can not find out who his children were. Thank you Maranda ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com

    2. Dear Wanda Rabb, Thank you for the welome to the list! My name is Susan Vargas Murphy ([email protected]) and I have been researching my Azorean Portuguese Ancestry along with my husband's Irish/German/and mixed bag:) ancestry for many years. We live in Sacramento and the reason for this is that around the turn of the century (from 1880's to 1900's :) a Paxton family settled in Sacramento and their descendant married my mother-is-law's sister in the late 1930's. Steve Paxton got along very well with my Bostonian father-in-law and this friendship led my father-in-law to settle in Sacramento after World War II when he married my mother-in-law. There is now a grandchild of Steve's who is interested in the family history and I thought I would try to help her get started. So I started some research and posted the following letter awhile back and got no responses:( There is still more that I know I can do in the way of census research to do, but I was hoping that I might just get lucky and that Samuel Paxton and Catherine Donaldson would ring a bell with someone....I am still hoping, so I will post my letter again.....Thanks, Susan who lives her life in Sacramento because of some long ago Paxton family Hello Paxton List, I am doing some family research for a cousin whose name is Paxton. I know that she descends from a Samuel Paxton and Catherine Donaldson. Not sure is this is all correct but I found that Samuel's burial record at the FHC today and his cemetery stone said he was born 10 Sept 1817 (in Ohio, verbal family history) and he died 21 March 1868....his wife Catherine Donaldson was born 1825 and died 1889 (cemetery stone)..she has a single sister Jane Donaldson that is buried with them. They are buried in Canton, Ohio I found Catherine Paxton and her sister Jane Donaldson living in Canton Ohio in the 1880 Census. Samuel and Catherine's son was Daniel Donaldson Paxton who was born 31 Aug 1844 in Canton, Stark County Ohio. (I spent all day looking at all the microfilm on 1850 Census and checked every Samuel Paxton..there were many....and none matched....so the Canton location for Daniels' birth may be wrong...verbal family history:) Daniel Donaldson Paxton and Sarah Pemiela Stevens were married in late 1870's in California.....Daniel died in Sacramento on 29 August 1913... Daniel and Sarah Paxton's children: Katherine Paxton Dec. 26, 1875 Julia L. Paxton Jan 1878, name may be Norine Emma July 22, 1880 Laura A. Paxton Oct 1882 Alvin Samuel Paxton - 2 July 1885 in Nelson, Butte County, CA Ida May Paxton- November 24, 1887 Stephen S. Paxton Dec 7, 1890 Daniel D. Paxton, Oct 22, 1893 Does anyone recognize this family? Does anyone know the parents of Samuel Paxton that married Catherine? Susan Vargas Murphy Sacramento, CA

    3. John: Not an expert, but I'd think you'd be in no more danger of your address being spread around to spammers with the new setup than you are now. Rootsweb does have spam filters in place that stops any spam from getting through to the lists. As far as "harvesters" go, I can't see how this is going to make it any easier for them. I checked the q&a board, nothing posted to answer this already, so I posted the question. I will post their answer when I get it. 3. Rootsweb has announced a new service whereby any posts to the GenConnect boards can now be "gatewayed" to mailing lists. When a board is gatewayed to a mailing list, every message posted to the GenConnect board will be forwarded to the corresponding mailing list. The message sent to the list will contain the URL of the specific post to allow the list subscribers to respond directly to the message. In this manner, gatewaying will enable more effective communication between the mailing lists and the GC boards. The messages from the GenConnect board will be forwarded with the prefix: [GenConnect] so you can distinguish them better. If you want to delete, fine, but with the very slight increase in messages received, I feel this will be a great way to find something you might have otherwise missed. If you have any concerns or questions, please feel free to contact me directly at [email protected] Thanks! Wanda Rabb
