    1. [PAXTON-L] James Washington Estel Paxton
    2. SK Coffman
    3. James Washington Estel Paxton was the oldest son of William Paxton and Ruhama Jane Cobble, and grandson of Alfred Paxton and Catharine Keasling. He was born 10 Aug 1887 at Mosheim, Greene Co, Tennessee. In Jan 1901, he came to Custer Co, Nebraska with his parents, who located in Antelope Valley, south of Sargent, Custer Co, Nebraska. This man was known in the area as "Estel" Paxton and was my cousin on my dad's side of the family. On 19 Feb 1911, he was united in marriage to Arminda Fellows and they were the parents of one son, Ethen Rex Paxton. Arminda Fellows was my great aunt on my mom's side of the family so he was my great uncle. Following their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Paxton resided on a farm until March 1920, when they moved into Sargent where they made their home. Estle was a big man billed as "the largest cream buyer in Nebraska". At 38 years of age, he was 545 lb, and 6ft-6 tall. A write-up from the Omaha World Herald tells about him: WHERE THE BIG MEN GROW J.E. Paxton, Sargent, Neb. weights 635 pounds and growing at 50 pounds a year; may be world's largest man. Revealing to himself the possibilities of farming in Nebraska, J. E. Paxton came from Sargent to Omaha Sunday night. Mr. Paston, whose right to the title, "Nebraska giant" is not disputed, tips the beam at 635 pounds. With Mr. Paxton are his wife, and his son, Ethen, who is 11 years old. Mrs. Paxton is smaller than the average woman, and Ethen has neither hope nor ambition of equaling his father in size. They are guest at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Charles McDonald, 617 Park Avenue. For breakfast Monday morning Mrs. McDonald served the giant an even half dozen of fried eggs, side rashers of sausage, several cups of coffee, and generous slices of bread and butter. "He has a hearty appetite", said Mrs. Paxton, "but he eats a lot less than some very thin men I have known". Mr. Paxton's bulk is largely fore and aft, rather than up and down, as he is only slightly above six feet. His girth is tremendous, so that attempts to get him into a closed automobile were immediately abandoned. Paxton is 37 years old. He was born in Tennessee, and came to Nebraska in 1901. Last summer Mr. Paxton, aided only by his wife and son did his farm work. He raised ninety acres of corn, besides some oats and hay. Farm labor only increases his weight. Drafted when the was began in 1917, he then weighed 325 pounds, and was rejected for that reason, although he says, the doctors declared he was one of the soundest men they had examined. He's been gaining at least fifty pounds a year since then. According to Manager Hartung of the Orpheum theater, Mr. Paxton can well lay claim to being the biggest man to the world. Hartung knows of none other weighing as much as 6 hundred pounds. J.E. Paxton died suddenly while doing his chores on Saturday evening, 8 Jan 1944 and was laid to rest on 12 Jan 1944 at the Mount Hope Cemetery, Sargent, Custer Co, Nebraska. Arminda Fellows Paxton was one of 6 children born to Henry and Ella Fellows on 24 Jun 1889 and passed away 11 Apr 1970 and was laid to rest on 14 Apr 1970 at the Mount Hope Cemetery, Sargent, Custer Co Nebraska. If anyone out there has any information on this line, I would love to trade. I have lots of information to Alfred Paxton, then the line stops. The 1850 census of Greene Co, Tennessee shows Alfred Paxton to be 24 and born in TN and his parents?? born in TN and Catharine to be 23.

    3. Hi Tamara, I checked the Census for Nebraska 1885. I came up with James Paxton age 10, borne in Maine. Another James P. Paxton age 35, born in Missouri, living in Greeley. And a James Paxton age 36 born in Kentucky living in Richardson, Nebraska. No James Paxton born in 1860. Where was your James Paxton born and what leads you to think he might be in Nebraska at this time? I did a little more checking and there is a J. S. Paxton on the 1885 Census living in theVillage of Valentine, Cherry, Nebraska- age 20 born in Missouri. There is no actual image of the Census available online to view so I'm unable to see if he was married and had any children. 3. I believe he was in Nebraska, because his Son Chauncey was said to be born in Nebraska in 1885, however, it is possible that he was born in Vermillion county Indiana or Vermillion County Illinois too. I do know his son Guy WAS born in Hebron Nebraska in 1887. That was way before they kept birth records though, so I don't know how to find a mothers name there. This is one of my Brick wall ancestors I guess! 3. Willy, I know Diehl made some mistakes, but for what it's worth, he is quoted as writing that John Paxton was buried in the Falling Springs Cemetery. Has anyone actually reported finding his tombstone? I've wondered if he wasn't buried at the private Paxton cemetery where his mother and all of his brothers were buried... but I can't prove/disprove that. Secondly, I have a question: I have John Paxton, b. 1716, married to Mary Blair. You indicate Martha Blair. Do you have any documentation on her name? Is she buried in the Timber Ridge Cemetery. Incidentally, we were in Rockbridge Co this summer and visited Timber Ridge church and cemetery, but couldn't find John's stone. How did we miss it? 3. Jan, I found on Ancestry a list that will allow you to search the Nebraska State Census of 1885. It did tell me there were two James Paxton's there, but because I don't have a membership it wouldn't let me see who. Can you possibly check this listing? If he has any children at all at this census it would be Chauncey. I am pretty sure he won't be there though. My James was born in 1860 if that helps. I REALLY Appreciate this, you are wonderful. Came up with 3. James Paxton, age 10. James Paxton, age 30 born in Missouri, now living in St. Paul, wife Isadora. and the 3rd James Paxton age 34 born in Kentucky, living in Falls City, Richardson, Nebraska. This predates the birth years of your James children so of course they did not show but the two James Paxtons in there 30s did already have families. I haven't time now to search any farther for you but I'm willing to try again later. Have a great day. Secondly, I have a question: I have John Paxton, b. 1716, married to Mary Blair. You indicate Martha Blair. Do you have any documentation on her name? Is she buried in the Timber Ridge Cemetery. Well I guess we are related then but I am trying to figure out what the relationship is - Great cousins? LOL Your great grandfather was Terry's brother Which one? My paternal great grandmother was Mary McGovern , Terry's sister. She married Daniel Paxton and their children were Samuel and Phillip who I believe was named after one of Mary McGovern's brothers (was he a pugilist also?). Samuel was my paternal grandfather He married Adeline Gull and they had 2 sons , my father Daniel Francis and my uncle William . My father Daniel Francis Paxton married Mary Perrone and they had 7 children (5 girls and 2 boys) of which I am the eldest girl( Age 49). William Paxton married Helen Molloy and they have 1 adopted son Michael. Samuel 's brother Phillip married Louise Vincent and they had 1 child , a daughter named Joan. She married a fellow named Kenneth Dahl and they had 3 sons, whom I have no idea what their names are or where they live. My Aunt Helen (William's wife) gave me the info about Phillip as we were not close to them. ) I had always been told from my dad that it is near impossible to retrieve our family records as they were lost in the Johnstown Flood. Have you been told that as well? It saddens me that when my grandfather was alive I was too young to care about the lineage although I hacve heard about Terrible Terry all my life. It is only recently with my daughter's interest in geneology that we have begun to really try to find some info about the Paxtons and the McGoverns. Any info that you may have would be greatly appreciated. Mary McGovern and Daniel Paxton as well as Samuel and Adeline Paxton and my dad Daniel Francis Paxton are all buried at St. Charles cemetery on Long Island in New York . What part of the country are you from? I anm particularly interested in finding out where in Ireland the McGoverns came from as well as the Paxtons. Any info you have on any of our McGovern great great great great aunts and uncles would be greatly appreciated. You can email me direct if you wouldn't mind at dianamohawk@yahoo.com. Thank you so much for posting a reply. There is one other person that was on here a couple of years ago who was also connected somehow but she has never come back on . Take care. Diana

My great grandfather was Terry's brother, and named may grandfather after him when Terry died of Pnemonia. Terry McGovern then went on to marry and pass the name to my father, who in turn passed it to me, Terry Anthony McGovern III. Nice to know that nobody's forgotten about "Terrible" Terry.
