I agree in principle with the point you are making. I got Family Tree Maker for Chistmas and have input about 1500 names (have about 3500 to go). In these I know and input documentation when I have it and question marks when the data isn't verified by a validated source. But every 100 names I get prompted to upload to FTM. I have not done so and do not intend to do so because I, too, feel if my information is not validated it is just for my use. As others would add this to their data, I feel it is not correct for me to put it out their for their use when I am just using it as a guideline and they might take it as gospel. And as you wrote once someone adds your info to their line it just compounds the error or misinformation. I have printed out data I have found online but only use it as a guide to further my research. I don't know what the answer is, but I do enjoy being able to find what I call "clues" and would hate to have that limited, but again I don't use these "clues" as facts.
