School at Hemlock Bottom was held at David Young's log barn near the bank of the Susquehanna River, In the sumer of 1799 and 1800 the teacher Polly Stevens, wife of Myron Steves. The first log schoolhouse was built about 1801, well back from the river as the water became high in the spring of the year. Polly Young was the first teacher.These pioneer schools were a far cry from today.The children sat on backless benches whose seat were slabs flat side up supported by logs from saplings.
