Sarah Fassett born September 27, 1793 sister to Jasper and dau of Josiah and Abigail, was a small child when her parents camte to Hemlock Bottom. She grew up there and married John Sturdevant of Black Walnut. His father was the fist pastor in the area. After living a few years at hemlock Bottom they sold their farm to a nephew, Jasper Gassertt Jr, and moved to Black Walnut. Major John Gassett was born Sept 16, 1794, brother to Jasper and Sarah was one year old when he came with his parents to the new settlement in 1795. He became one of the most active, influential and successful citizens of Windham township. From the time he was 15 he had charge of his father's business until the latter died August 20, 1823 at age of 62 John inherited that portion of the homestead on which the buildings were located and built a substantial house there in 1824 It consisted of three floors and several fireplaces. There was a beautiful winding stairway near the front entrance and one in the back leading from the kitchen,. A large stone chimney was built through the center of the house with openings for each fireplace. the house was so expertly built that after one hundred and fifty years of use it remained as firm as when it was erected.
