    3. Wanted: Living Male Townsend.... Is there someone out there who might know (know of) a living male Townsend descending from Levi Townsend of Falls Township, Wyoming County, PA. Levi's sons were: Benjamin Peter Charles Zephaniah Levi Consider What I'm looking for are sons, from sons, from sons, to a now living male Townsend descending from this line. (Unfortunately, three generations ago, my husband's Townsend ancestor was a female.) Thanks, Liz

    1. [PAWYOMIN-L] Levi Townsend (the father)
    2. Liz Heaton Brown
    3. Hello Everyone, Can anyone tell me who the parents of Levi Townsend were? This is what I know about Levi: He was probably born no later than 1750. He arrived in Wyoming County (which at that time was Luzerne County) as early as 13 Mar 1795 (because on that date, Levy and Rebecca Townsend bought 100 acres of land from Benjamin Jones). He came to Wyoming County from Dutchess County, NY, after staying for a time in Sussex County, NJ. Levi died in Falls Township, Luzerne County, between 19 Feb 1827 when his will was dated and 13 Feb 1834 when his will was proved. He was married to Rebecca Jones, daughter of Benjamin Jones Sr. and Jemimah Delevan. Rebecca and her family were from Exeter, Luzerne County. They had, at least, these children named in his will: sons Benjamin and Peter, daughters Sarah (married name Jones), Rhoda (married name Kinyon), Minerva (married name Daily or Daley), Rebecca (married name Sterling) Susannah (married name Morgan), sons Charles and Zephaniah (who were both deceased before the will was written in 1827) and sons Levi and Consider, with Consider named as executor. Levi and his family appear on the following Census lists: 1800 Exeter Township, Luzerne County 1810 Exeter Township, Luzerne County 1820 Falls Township, Luzerne County 1830 Falls Township, Luzerne County Levi was closely related, either by blood or friendship, to Gilbert Townsend who also moved from Dutchess County to Luzerne (now Wyoming) County. Gilbert married Elizabeth Colwell, daughter of Joseph, and had at least one son, Joseph. Any help or suggestions for research sources you can give me will be very much appreciated. Liz

    3. I Went thought my source files and this is what came up with. 1 st source for Maggies date of birth 1858 is The Detrick Tomb stone records found at the Wyoming Historic Society in Tunkahnnock. the stone was ordered by Mrs Margaret Osterhout her address was given as Osterhout Pa and her phone was 212-R-4. Stone reads Winfred Osterhout 1850 - 1915, Margaret Austin his wife 1858. Stone to be set in La Grange Cemetery in July. cost of stone $73.00. The order was placed on 2 June 1927, Page 107 record 9130. 2. In her father Civil War Papers, The Additional Evidence document - Application for pension : is listed the following names and date of birth of all the children of said deceased soldier Sarah M Austin B 2 Sept. 1854 Maggie M Austin B 5 April 1857 Emma E Austin b 6 Feb. 1859 Signature of claimant on the document Margery Caroline Austin. 3. Another Civil War file document - Widows claim for Pension dated 22 June 1865 report 3 children under age of 16 years. Sarah Age 11, Maggie age 8 Emma Age 6 years of age. P.M. Osterhout of Tunkhannock appointed Attorney for Margery C Austin. 4 another document in the file No 63,244 - Department of Interior Claim of widow having Minor children is dated 27 July 1964 It states Maggie M who will be 16 on 4 April 1873, which would make her dob 1857. 5. Marge Gray a researcher who lives in Florida also says Maggie dob 5 April 1857. Not sure what date of birth for Maggie I sent you but all sources except the Detrick Tombstone records says 5 April 1857. So I think 1857 must be correct. However one would think Maggie would have known her correct year of birth. But its possible the Detrick got it wrong. Her father David B Austin enlisted at Trenton N.J. 25 Feb. 1864, Pvt co I 2nd N.J. Vol. He died at Andersonville, S.C. prison 14 August 1864, from dysentery. He was taken prisoner at the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House, Va 14 day of May 1864. This is the entire document from the file that I copied at the National Archives in Washington, D.C. Not sure if I copied every doc or not. Also personally appeared before me George Osterhous and Moagan Fitch residents of Wyoming County and State of Pennsylvania to me well known as credible persons who being duly sworn declare that they were present and saw Margery C Austin sign her name to the foregoing declaration and that they have every reason to believe from the appearance of said applicant and their acquaintance with her that she is the identical person she represents herself to be and they further state that they know from personal knowledge that the above named children are the children of the applicant and her said deceased husband and that they are still living and that they have no interest in this claim either personal or --------- and that they have no concerned directly or indirectly in its ------------.. George Osterhout Morgan Fitch Sworn and subscribed to before me this 11th day of September 1866 and I certify that I have no interest direct or individual in the prosecution of this claim and that the certainty of the above was made known and explained to applicant and witnesses before signing Biha Scott Prouthonotary who are the Pattersons you are tracing? My Great Grandmother Sarah Adaline Clark's mother was Elizabeth Jane Patterson, She married Sidney Zina Clark. Elizabeth father was Henry Patterson and her mother was mary Schafer. Good luck Marian

    3. Jack, I'd "love" to give you some specific names but my wife doesn't know what they are. It definitely is ashame that some cemeteries are left to overgrow with weeds and such. But...that's probably due to the lack of anyone wanting to take responsibility of keeping them "cleaned up." Thanks for your responses. My appreciated! Harold -------Original Message------- From: j.schoedinger.2@netzero.net Sent: 06/10/03 06:12 PM To: PAWYOMIN-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [PAWYOMIN-L] Tiffany & Stanton Cemetery sites > > Harold, I understand the problem about overgrown cemeteries, It is truly a shame. I have several that have Carpenter family members that are now in that same condition. Fortunately, there are a lot of records that also provide the needed research information. I have just transcribed a genealogy report which had a few Tiffanys and also Stanton s that resided in Abington Township, in what are now Wyoming And Lackawanna Counties. If you could give us a few names, maybe that could lead us to the elusive cemetery you seek. 2. Marian, First, thanks for the information... Now on to business... First question... what is your source for Maggie's birthdate... My records show a conflicting date... 05 Apr 1857... and judging from how I entered that information into my database (I neglected to provide my reference -- so it was inputted a year ago or so)... so it would be wonderful if you had something firm as a reference that I could hang my hat on to resolve the conflict! I also was unaware that Maggie's father died in Andersonville... this is the kind of human interest that makes genealogy really fun... And, lastly... Do you have George Osterhout's statement??? Is there anything of interest regarding George's service? Was he in Andersonville too (he obviously survived)? Thanks for the time you devoted to helping me with my research... Every little piece of information contributes to our research much like the compounding of interest in our savings account... today it may not seem like much... but watch it grow over time!
