I am trying to find more information on my GGGGrandfather Michael Ovell (Also spelled Ovel). He married a Catherine Felton ca 1816 in Nicholson, Luzerne County,Pa. They had 6 children. Catherine was the daughter of a Henry Felton, unknown mother's name but could have been Rachel. Mr. Felton was a Part of Company D of the 4th Pa. Regiment of the Pa. Line at Germantown, Pa. (I "think" he was with Washington at Valley Forge). I have not been able to find any records of my GGGGrandfather, prior to his marriage to Catherine. No birth date, who his parents were or even where he was born. I seem to have hit the preverbal stone wall. Ideas would be greatly appreciated. Kathryn Ovell Bennett
Actually I was very surprized to see Spam on a rootsweb mailing list. Rootsweb installed a program a few months ago to detect and block spam from being posted to the list. Any blocked mail is sent to the list owner to be doubled checked, I've seen lots being blocked on my lists this month. Thanks Rootsweb for protecting us from the spam (humm might be nice to send in those donations for Christmas to Rootsweb to help them keep up the great work). >From "The Record of The Times" Wilkes-Barre,Friday, July 8, 1892. VERNON [Correspondence, July 6.] Mrs. Thomas Pinder, who died here recently, was a native of Yorkshire, England. Mr. and Mrs. Pinder came to this country in the year 1849, and settled in Northmoreland Township, where Mr. Pinder still resides. Mrs. Pinder was a consistant member of the M. E. Church over 40 years. She was a kind and peaceful neighbor and much loved in the community in which she had spent the greater part of her life. Her death has cast a gloom over the entire neighborhood. Mr. Pinder has the sympathy of the community in his sad bereavement. Mrs. Pinder leaves a family of five adult children-Edward(sic) Pinder and Mrs. I.W. Kresge, both of Northmoreland Township; Mrs. Isaac Denman of Kingston, Luzerne County, Pa.; Eli Pinder of Clearfield County, Pa.; and Jason Pinder of Michigan. Mr. Pinder is a grandson of Thomas Moore, who came to Wilkes-Barre about the year 1820 in company with a John Wood. Luke Moore, who is in his eighty-sixth year, and still a resident of Wilkes-Barre, and William Moore, who died recently in Wilkes-Barre, in his eighty-third year, and was buried at Vernon, Wyoming County, were sons of the late Thomas Moore, who came to Wilkes-Barre in 1820, and uncles of Thomas Pinder. John Wood, who came to Wilkes-Barre in 1820 with Mr. Moore, was the father of the late John Wood, several of whose children are still residents of Wilkes-Barre.

Hi everyone! I'm hoping one of you has information that will help in a particular quest: This weekend my husband and son will be driving respectively from northern NY and southern PA to Bradford and Wyoming Counties to look for the Joseph Elliott Monument which can be seen at Ginny Magee's website: JOSEPH ELLIOTT MONUMENT http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Valley/5958/jemonument.html Ginny also has further information about Capt. Jos Elliott in the Revolutionary War section at her site. Joseph Elliott was my husband's gggrandfather. My husband saw the monument when he was a child, on the same day that they visited relatives at a farm in Merryall, PA, (Bradford Co.) and remembers that it was placed along the road, high above the Susquehanna River, overlooking the river valley. (The photo above was taken at this time.) This memory, as well as the info on the monument leads us to believe that it must be in Bradford or Wyoming Co, but a phone call to the area brought no info as to its location or present existence. It appears to be a sizable monument, and seemingly not easily misplaced. :-) If you can shed any light at all on our mystery, or give further advice, please do so. No suggestion is too small. :-) I'm on Digest, so if you reply to the list, please copy me privately. Best regards to all, Alyce Thompson Elliott The North Country NY [email protected] PS If you are by any chance related....get in touch! Let's exchange gen info. Hi Everyone! Last week I got into a conversation on the Virginia Roots list about the circuit-riding preacher, Lorenzo Dow. Lots of us have a Lorenzo Dow 'Somebody' in our data. Since I have a lot of information about the 'original' Lorenzo Dow, they asked if I would post a web page about him. Well, I ran home from work that night and put up the Lorenzo Dow page after supper! I hope you find it interesting. He was something! I can just see him jumping out of a church window onto a horse and riding away shouting that he would be back one year from the day! He did, too! The site is: http://www.acun.com/dentons The link to the article about Lorenzo Dow is about half way down the first page. There may be a few typos from the scanning process. I was in kind of a hurry and will fix them tonight. I hope you enjoy the stories! Blessings! Sue Montgomery-Cook
I have a photo marked Johnson BAKER taken ca. 1900-1912. Don't know why he is in my family photo stuff I found in my Aunt's house but must be a cousin or something. Possibly related to the Alling's from Wyoming or Exeter. If it fits anyone else's Baker genealogy, let me know. Diana
I have been searching for any information on these families for over 2 year so "anything" you may have would be greatly appreciated. My grandfather, Carl Abraham SCHULTHEIS was born in 1903 in Lackawanna Co, PA and supposedly lived in Ransom Twsp. I have been told that his mother Carrie BEDELLA/BEDELL SCHULTHEIS died in 1915 from diabetes. His father William SCHULTHEIS, supposedly died in 1920. He married a Mildred Lena BAKER in the mid 1920s and shortly thereafter moved to FL never to go back to PA. Her parents were "supposedly" Stephen Burt BAKER and Flora Ellen SIMPKINS. Don't have any dates on them. I have obtained death certificates and SSN applications and they seem to support all the above information. Also have an insurance application that was filled out in 1929 that says much of the same (that is where I got the Ransom Twsp and the mother and father death dates). I have researched the soundex for 1910 and 1920 and none of the 4 surnames (SCHULTHEIS, BAKER, BEDELL, SIMPKINS) seem to be listed with the correct age and first names. I have not looked at the entire mircofilm because it is 4-5 rolls and that would take a while. I look forward to hearing from anyone. Chris Schultheis

I am seeking information on Samuel J. Hess and his parents. He was born in Feb 1865 in Phila. and later married Carrie Herdman. They settled in Kunkle and had a son, Leroy, on June 7, 1893. I believe sisters included Jennie L. and Maggie R., born in early 1870's. I believe his parents were Samuel R. Hess (born 1841 in Pa) and Muralla (born 1846 in Pa).
