Westmoreland Co., PA deaths in 1854 "During the years 1852 to 1854, the Register of Wills for each county was required by law to keep records and indexes of births, deaths and marriages. Copies from 49 of the 64 counties existing at that time are maintained at the Archives; however, returns are not inclusive for these years. There are no returns for Blair, Clarion, Clinton, Crawford, Erie, Fayette, Forest, Fulton, Jefferson, Lebanon, Philadelphia, Pike, Potter, Sullivan, or Wyoming County." Archivist, PA State Archives. I spoke to the archivist. The county registrar made two sets of records - one to keep, one to send to the state. Those original state returns from the 1850s are at the State archives and have been microfilmed. I don't know where the originals are from the counties. Indiana Co. has a typescript in ledger form for use at the courthouse. I haven't checked with Westmoreland Co. I need to spend more time with the catalog at familysearch.org (LDS site) to see if perhaps the microfilm of the state copy returns is available. The films that come up when you search by county for Westmoreland are transcripts. The archivist seemed to think that perhaps they are available in Salt Lake but are cataloged at the State level or under Dept. of State. A copy is in the Westmoreland Co. court house. Typed copy in 4 columns. First column is NAME. Second is (#) of something, perhaps page. Third is RESIDENCE. Fourth is PLACE OF BURIAL. It should be understood this is a transcription of a transcription of records that were extracted by county clerks and sent to the state archives and put on film.
