Hello, I am researching my brother-in-law's family. We are working back from Robert Oliver Skemp, born August 22, 1910 in Scottsdale. He became an artist of some renown and died in 1984 in NY. Apparently, his mother, Olive Hess Skemp, also had some renown in the 1920s for her art . still working to confirm this last bit (am in touch with the Smithsonian Museum). I am pretty sure that his parents were Olive Hess and Arthur Skemp, who I believe married in 1909. What is interesting about this is that I went to the Westmoreland County online search function and could find a marriage for an Olive F Hess in 1909 . though there is not a corresponding marriage for anyone with a last name of Skemp?!?! Her marriage info has Hess, Olive F, book 35, page n/a, record no. 27859 and a date of 10/14/1909. The only Skemp individuals found were 2 of Arthur's brothers, Leo (1912) and Harold (1919) . so, a bit puzzled by this. Moving on . we find the family in the 1930 census at 702 Arthur Avenue: Arthur Skemp, 44, England, manager - sheet mill Olive Skemp, 42, Pennsylvania Robert Skemp, 19, Pennsylvania (other resources indicate that he might have been studying art in NYC at the time) Nancy Skemp, 16, Pennsylvania John Skemp, 14, Pennsylvania We also find the family in the 1920 census . same address, same family members. In the 1910 census, Arthur J Skemp and Olive H Skemp appear to be newlyweds. Arthur's parents were: Robert Skemp and Kate Summer who emigrated in the late 1880s. We first find them in 1900 at 38 Loucks Avenue, Scottdale Skemp, Robert, 41, England, Supt Rolling Mill Skemp, Kate S, 43, England Skemp, Robert, 19, England, Clerk Rolling Mill Skemp, Arthur, 16, England, at school Skemp, Leo, 12, England, at school Skemp, Harold, 10, Pennsylvania, at school Skemp, Robert, Father, 75, England, retired (he came over in 1890 . have passenger record) Sumner, Sarah, M in law, 80, England Sumner, Hannah, S in law, 41, England By the 1920 census, Arthur and Harold have left the home, the father (Robert Sr) appears to be deceased and the mother and sister in law are still with them . the mother in law is now 90! Haven't yet looked hard for them in the 1930 census! Looking at the 1900 census, we do find an Olive J Hess with her family . 422 Pittsburg Street, Scottdale Hess, Oliver, 46, Pennsylvania, Physician Hess, Katherine, 36, Pennsylvania Hess, Olive J, 15, Pennsylvania, at school Hess, Evelyn, 8, Pennsylvania, at school Hess, Helen R, 6, Pennsylvania That pretty much exhausts what we have learned so far. We assume that Arthur and Olive did marry in Scottdale. We also imagine that her parents and his parents are buried in Scottdale (as well as his grand parents) . we heard that at least Olive maybe moved to New York at some point . obviously, not till after 1930! So, any help either with these families or with resources for the area . would be wonderful! TIA, Diane :-) Diane Richard 2408 Dunbrook Ct Raleigh, NC 27604 dianelr@nc.rr.com
