He was born Dec. 4, 1912, in Latrobe, the son of the late Emmett Joseph and Malinda Murphy Ashbaugh. Sam was self-employed and was a U.S. Army veteran, having served from 1932-1936. He loved the Steelers and the Pittsburgh Pirates. He is survived by four daughters: Sandy Himler, Latrobe; Patricia Newhouse, New Stanton; Mary Sue Garris, Greensburg; and Shirley Emehizer, Derry; four sons: John C. and wife Michelle, Robinson; Charles E., South Carolina; Samuel, Norvelt, and William H., Latrobe; several grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and "Kitty." Besides his parents and grandmother, Mary Brant, who raised him, Sam was preceded in death by his wife, Kathryn (McAfee), and two sons, James and Terry. Services and interment were private.
