    2. Hi Ellen: I didn't find anything in the deeds office showing John Cummings or a variation of his name. That doesn't mean it isn't there, just that I didn't find it. Maybe I didn't know what I was doing. Never thought about a Sheriff's sale, but don't really know why that would be. John moved his family of seven people directly from there to Indiana, arriving in the 1816/1817 time frame so I assume he must have sold it around then. With all the paperwork he went through to obtain the Patent, including paying back taxes, I can't imagine he just walked off without selling it. My only other thought is if some relative who was staying behind took over the land and sold it at a much later date.
