Hi, I am still trying to obtain the information of what county my GG Grandmother was born in Ireland. Before I attempt to get a genealogist (which is quite expensive) from Ireland to do some work for me...I need to locate what parish she was from or county in Ireland. I don't know if this would be listed on her death certificate, or her marriage certificate. Can someone give me some information on this? I also do not know where she and my GG Grandfather were married. It is really causing some problems for me. What does someone suggest? We are going back to the 1820's to 1830's. I do know that she died in Latrobe on 6/3/1882. She was born in Waterford Ireland in 1820, so she would have been 62 years old. Records are available in Ireland beginning a little before 1820, so I could locate the parish if I had more information. It is really important to me as I have spent at least 10 years trying to come up with information. I know that if I could get information from the Catholic Church I would probably have my answer, but I doubt that I will get this from them in Westmoreland County. Can someone please tell me what to do....thanks so much! Mary Ellen **************Gas prices getting you down? Search AOL Autos for fuel-efficient used cars. Mary Ellen, What's your hurry? Before I'd pay an professional genealogist in Ireland, I'd attempt to do what I could from here. The online Irish records project for County Waterford is not yet online. This link may explain some things to others doing Irish research as well. http://ifhf.brsgenealogy.com/index.php?&set=yes I'd continue to watch that site for news on when the release of the Waterford records will occur. But in the meantime, Take inventory on what "facts" about them in this country you actually have. For example, do you have all the available census records for them? Have you roughly determined when she arrived in the US (when did they first appear on the census?)? Was she already married? If not, for that time frame, a good source of Catholic B-M-D records is the 5-vol(?) set of bound books by Fr. Ledoux which has Catholic records from Central PA, Blair, Cambria Counties. It is a wonderful resource. Did they always (and only) live in WestmoCo? Are you positive? Check those Ledoux books. Check your closest library with a good local history dept. Check the Carnegie Library Catalog as well. Depending on when your folks left Ireland, have you attempted looking at the Griffiths Valuations for Co. Waterford for "like-named" families? Griffiths might be in the Ancestry.com Library Edition (in the UK/Ireland Collection of records). Have you found any US Naturalizations (at the county level) for your folks? Usually not much is on the Nat. papers for the mid-1800's but, you can at least get an idea of time of their arrival. If not in WestmoCo, try Cambria & Blair & Indiana COs. Can you say "field trip"? With that beautiful set of online records for WestmoCo, I'm surpirsed that a Naturalization index is not included with them. And don't forget the LDS Library Catalog. What do they have on Waterford? Make time to order in, and look at, one or two films of note, just to see for yourself what you're working with. Have you subscribed to the Rootsweb mailing lists for your surname of interest, and, for Co. Waterford? Lurk for awhile, then put out a feeler posting to see what responses you might get. Those are my few suggestions for how to proceed. Surely other listers can come up with more for you. Spending for a foreign researcher would be my LAST resort. Not that I have anything against them, I'd just prefer to use my noggin' and do some of the stuff myself. And by all means, don't get frustrated feeling that you're not getting anywhere. Lots of us have been doing this much longer than you, and still cannot make the overseas connection. Bella
Mary Ellen In some cases the chruch where they were married over here required them to prove they were baptized in Ireland and that baptismal information may be included their wedding record here. It's worked in NYC for me. God luck and remember the penal laws at the turn of the century prevented catholics from conducting religious serives, speaking galeic, recieving an education, holding office or owning a horse more than five hands tall. I am unaware of records starting around 1820, the offical records date is closer to 1863. Each county has a family history centry that has copies of church records and other information. I'd try them before I'd hire anyone. > From: [email protected] > Date: Sun, 22 Jun 2008 11:13:02 -0400 > To: [email protected] > Subject: Re: [PAWESTMO] Death certificates and marriage certificates > > Hi, I am still trying to obtain the information of what county my GG > Grandmother was born in Ireland.
