I've found the USGS U.S. Board on Geographic Names Query Form For The United States And Its Territories at: http://geonames.usgs.gov/pls/gnispublic/ very helpful for locating small towns. County, Latitude, Longitude, elevation and other information is provided. Note: read the warning at top of the page before bookmarking it. The Geographic Nameserver at MIT: http://stuff.mit.edu/cgi/geo is also very good if you need County, Lat. Long., elevation, population and Zip code for places that were on the map about 1987. --RB
