    2. Hi Nathan I have noticed that some Cemetery pages have listed only name with Tombstones. Is there a record of Burials without Tombstones. I am searching for graves from the late 1700 to early to mid 1800 s. 3. I have had the same problem recently in Cambria Co.  It is so frustrating to know that people are buried in a certain plot (Grandview Cemetery) only to find there is no headstone.  Is it possible that these graves were marked with wooden markers that have since rotted away?  My assumption was that they were so poor as to not afford a lasting memorial. 3. I think that rotten wood and the cost of headstones are two good resasons as well as eroison of the stones themselves. Vandialism is another possiable cause for no stone. Someone a while back mentioned that when they were "cleaing" up St. Michael's in Lorettto, broken and eroided stones were tossed into a revine. > Date: Fri, 29 Aug 2008 07:29:49 -0700 > From: [email protected] > To: [email protected] > CC: [email protected]; [email protected] > Subject: Re: [PAWESTMO] Westmoreland County Genealogy Project Update CEMETERY PAGE > > I have had the same problem recently in Cambria Co. 3. Shirley, It is entirely possible that a grave was marked with a wooden marker or particularly in older cemeteries just a field stone with initials chiseled in it. Wooden markers would rote away and I've seen field stone markers down in the ground so that you wouldn't know it was there and the initials so faint that they are very difficult to figure out what the letters are - then you don't know who the initials stand for. An example - my gggrandparents lived in Jefferson County but we had no idea where they were buried. A little cemetery that we've visited and are taking care of only has a few marked graves and a number of graves with just field-stones and others where you can see indentations in the ground that look like graves. Of the marked graves none are family. I was in the History Center for Jefferson County going through their cemetery books and came across a record of the burials from this cemetery. An elderly lady had provided the information to a family member years ago (she grew up next to the little cemetery) and the info had been passed down and finally a copy ended up at the History Center. Guess who the last entry on her list of burials was? My gggrandparents - never knew that! I suspect that one of those field stone markers belong to them but we'll never know. Nathan

    3. Paul, Hi - great question but unfortunately we haven't gotten any contributions of cemeteries that include burial records. I would suspect that most early cemeteries in the county there were no burial records kept. There of course will be a few exceptions to that particularly if the cemetery was part of a church. It would take a fair amount of additional research to determine if any records do exist. I know that it's caused me problems in my research knowing an ancestor is buried in a specific cemetery but with no headstone.
