I'm planning a family trip to D.C. soon and am wondering if I could squeeze in time to copy a Civil War pension file while I am there. I have the info from the index on Ancestry.com. But I have never been to NARA before and am not sure of the procedures. How long would it take? How do I go about it? If I could save the $75 and do it myself in a short amount of time, that would be great! Thanks for any help you can give.
Civil War shouldn't be a problem. You will need ID. All your stuff in a locker except for pencils and paper. Go in and ask for it and wait. Get the military records also. Now this was some time ago and things may have changed a bit but waay before 9/11 you needed ID. I wouldn't plan on parking real near.
