    3. To J. Sadler, My great-great grandfather was a sculptor / stone cutter over in Pittsburgh during roughly the same period you mention your Sadler / Saddler ancestors were. In addition to "sculptor" and "stone cutter" he was also listed as a "marble cutter" in ads I've found in local directories of the time. Those ads referenced marble fireplace mantels, flooring tiles, monuments and mausoleums. His business was right outside the gates of one of the cemeteries for several years. My great-great grandfather's known works also include statuary adorning churches in Pittsburgh and a monument to Civil War soldiers His sons continued his business after his death and they are credited with the stonework at the entrance to one of the parks in Pittsburgh. Given the term "sculptor" was applied to your ancestors too, I'd look for them in business directories under that heading as well as "stone" or "marble& granite" or "monuments& memorials" and the like. I doubt they were toiling at hewing blocks out of a quarry, but rather carving those blocks into architectural elements, tombstones, and statues. --RB On 2/22/2011 12:00 AM,pawestmo-request@rootsweb.com wrote: > > Date: Mon, 21 Feb 2011 21:09:55 -0800 (PST) > > From: "J Sadler"<jsadler@drizzle.com> > > Subject: [PAWESTMO] Hempfield township question > > To:pawestmo@rootsweb.com > > Message-ID: > > <54429.66.119.222.206.1298351395.squirrel@webmail.drizzle.com> > > Content-Type: text/plain;charset=iso-8859-1 > > > > Hi all > > > > I'm looking for more info about an occupation titled "Stone Sculptor" or > > "Stone Cutter" in the 1850 to 1860 range.
