    3. Dear Listers, In the interest of good work & complete information on sources for the lay persons who use what it provided here is my reason for writing today. I am particularly interested in the placement of the West Newton Cemetery on line without more detail in regard to the source of the information provided. People sometimes need more than just names & dates. Even the date the work was copied can be most important. What if the death of a loved one in the cemetery is after the copy work was done? Then their person, if died later, would not be there. This is just an example. While directing this to the webmaster & the volunteers who contributed to duplicating the work of Della Reagan Fischer on line. I would also like to mention that this woman & I were personal friends, so I have a better knowledge than many in regard to her works, which through a particular process, had all her materials, including books, stencils for reproduction, etc. deposited in the Elizabeth Twp. His. Society for safe preservation with the rights to reproduce her work, which I know all about. I would suggest that those in charge do more than say to verify the work. They need to look at the front of her book to get the information as to just what she took her compilation from. In other words, office records, walking the cemetery, or both. In addition as to what comments she may have made in regard to how much area she covered, the condition of the cemetery, that might have made good coverage difficult to do. While I had a complete set of all her works from originals, they are now housed in a couple of libraries since I moved & I either use the ones at the historical society or the library, so I can't check that at the moment. Many are aware that her work is in libraries & historical societies all across the country. Of course, now that it is generally thought that all will someday will be "on line" we won't need the historical societies, or will we??? People who think that is going to happen are badly mistaken & it could result in something very undesirable. Also keep in mind that material on line can suddenly disappear, just like your computer can crash. A horrible thought isn't it? I cringe to think about that possibility. Since I am in charge of the genealogical research at the historical society & have been since 1986, & also been involved in genealogical research for over 40 years, my appreciation for both is avid & always will be. In the case of especially the historical societies I'd like to point out that, it is the "little special items" in each local one, that a person might need & never get if it's missed on line & the place is forced to close down. These places, even county ones, can lose financial support in the future. The others struggle for support and volunteers to assist in keeping them vibrant & are vital to success. I do hope those in charge will think seriously about adding more information to this West Newton Cemetery. They had a fire in their office at one time is one thing that should be added. I would be glad to communicate with those in charge if any would like to write to me privately. Happy hunting to all, Ellen J. Ballas (Mrs. Robert J.)
