Hi, I'm helping a cousin learn more about a Margaret Jane McGOWAN and her husband Robert SPROUL/SPROULL. Margaret's father was known as Mr. McGOWAN and in the 1880 census Margaret lists his birth place as Scotland. Margaret's mother was Jane REED. Mr. McGOWAN died either before Margaret was born, abt.1840, or sometime before 1844 as by that time Jane REED had married George ROSS and given birth to her 2nd child. In the 1850 Census, West Deer Allegheny Co., Pa. - Margaret is listed with the surname of McGOWAN and living in the household of George and Jane ROSS. 1860 Census Burrell, Westmoreland Co., Pa. - Margaret is listed as Margaret J. ROSS 1870 Census Allegheny Twp., Westmoreland Co. Pa. - Margaret is married to Robert SPROUL, a farmer, b. about 1833 in Pa., and they are living next door to George and Jane ROSS 1880 Census Washington City, Washington Co., Iowa - Margaret and Robert are living in Iowa. He is now in sales and lists his father b. in Ireland and mother in Pa. Johnston ROSS, Margaret's half brother, is living with them. When Jane ROSS died, Sept. 24, 1897, Margaret was still living in Washington, Iowa and she is listed as Mrs. R. S. Sproull. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.
