    3. I am working on the Peden, Paden, Payden families in Westmoreland County. I realize that the state did not require marriage or death certificates this early, but are there any sources for marriages and deaths circa 1850-1880? Thanks, Clare

    3. Hi, I got this link from another list and from a guy claiming to work for the PA DOT that makes color coded detailed maps of PA counties. When you click on the link, my FireFox opens up many duplicate tabs of this map. Just ignore them and close all but the first one. The files are about 4 megabytes. Unfortunately you will only see a blown up white corner at first. So set the zoom factor in your PDF viewer plug-in in your browser at 10% to see the entire map. Then center the area of interest and zoom in. Not all cemeteries are on the Bedford map but these are nice maps for locating the approximate location of a cemetery. They really are unnamed. The color legend is at the top right. Make sure to copy the entire link on both lines to your browser. HTH, Paul Beaurega0 ftp://ftp.dot.state.pa.us/public/pdf/BPR_pdf_files/Maps/GHS/Roadnames/Westmoreland_GHSN.PDF ************************ REF: Our Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PENNDOT) has great maps online. They are called Type 10. Here is the URL to the Bedford County map. Substitute any county for Bedford in the URL. The more you zoom in, the more detail appears. They have most cemeteries marked, but not named. ftp://ftp.dot.state.pa.us/public/pdf/BPR_pdf_files/Maps/GHS/Roadnames/Bedford_GHSN.PDF Bob McKinleyWestsylvania ---------- Original Message ---------- Bob McKinley <gravehunter1@netzero.net>

And I do agree it's actually in Indiana County.....I do think it's listed as both sometimes because if they happened to live across the river and Blairsville being the closest PO........made me think about my parents, they actually live in one county but their address is the next county J I think I had one of those "DAH" moments J Thanks so much again!!! 3. Don, A great link to a free census image site but hard to use and confusing. Information overload comes to mind. I found this to be a better starting point and procedure. http://www.archive.org/details/us_census Click on the year and drill down to the state. Find the county in the detailed blue link listings. Click on it and then on the left use: Read online. A BIG file! Use the slider at the bottom to first find the start of the county. Then find the page or P.O. name you saw on the ancestry census index. (OR, set the slider page directly to the "image number" found at pilotfamilysearch.org and make sure to record the family number to amke a one page fine adjustment. This procedure is faster.) Flipping and seeing both pages is a bit 'touchy'. It takes awhile to load a set of pages but worth it. On dial up? FORGET IT. 200-400 MB files. Thanks for a great research site. 3. Thank you all for the pointers/help/assistance! Since I get the digest version I don't see answers for about a day or so. So please don't think I'm not responding. Alissa Thanks for the suggestion about the Ancestry map check, I didn't know that they had maps. I did find a two quarries on the 1876 map that Ancestry had near J. Saddler in Grapeville. Don't know what kind the were but the fact that they were in the vicinity, backs up the census info. And it turns out that I have a 1867 map that shows a Mrs Saddler in the same location. Goes to show you should go back and check you existing sources. Rich Thanks for the pointers to the different ways areas that stone cutter/sculptor could be used. I've pretty much assumed that the Saddlers/Sadlers in Westmoreland & Beaver are all related. At least so far. The city directory that has John in it will definitely be looked into I didn't have that one! I'm not local to PA, actually on the other side of the country, but I have visited the area twice and did find that Sadlers crossing is just down the hill from where my father grew up. So my current theory is that it is related to the family and it probably did cross the railroad or stream/creek in there. If I remember correctly there is a old (abandoned?) industrial building on the other side of the tracks. James Thanks for forwarding my inquiry along to Bill. Very interesting that there may be other possible documentation of a Sadler stone cutter. You had a indirect reference to a book, do you have more info on it? J. Sadler

    3. To J. Sadler, My great-great grandfather was a sculptor / stone cutter over in Pittsburgh during roughly the same period you mention your Sadler / Saddler ancestors were. In addition to "sculptor" and "stone cutter" he was also listed as a "marble cutter" in ads I've found in local directories of the time. Those ads referenced marble fireplace mantels, flooring tiles, monuments and mausoleums. His business was right outside the gates of one of the cemeteries for several years. My great-great grandfather's known works also include statuary adorning churches in Pittsburgh and a monument to Civil War soldiers His sons continued his business after his death and they are credited with the stonework at the entrance to one of the parks in Pittsburgh. Given the term "sculptor" was applied to your ancestors too, I'd look for them in business directories under that heading as well as "stone" or "marble& granite" or "monuments& memorials" and the like. I doubt they were toiling at hewing blocks out of a quarry, but rather carving those blocks into architectural elements, tombstones, and statues. --RB On 2/22/2011 12:00 AM,pawestmo-request@rootsweb.com wrote: > > Date: Mon, 21 Feb 2011 21:09:55 -0800 (PST) > > From: "J Sadler"<jsadler@drizzle.com> > > Subject: [PAWESTMO] Hempfield township question > > To:pawestmo@rootsweb.com > > Message-ID: > > <54429.66.119.222.206.1298351395.squirrel@webmail.drizzle.com> > > Content-Type: text/plain;charset=iso-8859-1 > > > > Hi all > > > > I'm looking for more info about an occupation titled "Stone Sculptor" or > > "Stone Cutter" in the 1850 to 1860 range. 3. Hi, In Bedford County I found two pieces as parts of a tombstone and I was able to "lift" the name with some careful dusting. The name was a super rare surname, Winternight that didn't fit as a surname in Bedford County. The rest of the tombstone in this Ritchey Cemetery by Ritchey Bridge and is still buried underground. It turned out with some help from two others, that he was a stone sculptor and did his work in Baltimore. I think they recognized the surname. I forget. So it would not be unusual for a sculptor to fashion a tombstone or two on the side or under contract. Whoever this tombstone was for in Bedford County, he or she was from a family that was fairly well off to send all the way to Baltimore to have it made by Winternight. The marble tombstone pieces were also of a thickness that didn't match any other fragments in a pile of broken marble fragments and local red field stone markers. In your case, it might not be unusual to have a blank stone shipped in and the names "cut in" here. My wife's cousin asked why his mom's stone didn't have her death dates on it and he prepaid them to do it. The reply was that they wait until they have a few of them to do and then send the sand blaster equipment out to the cemetery to do all of them. I've seen it take as long a a year for the final dates to show up. It seems logical, at least. The 'rock of ages' stones are not from a quarry around here IMO but I am sure they are etched here. Just my two cents based on my studies. 3. If you have access to Ancestry, look at the Land Ownership Atlases. I know the 1860 one lists grist mills, quarries, and other businesses. I'm sure the others do as well. I know there is a quarry in West Hempfield near Salunga and one in East Petersburg/Manheim area. I'm not sure if you are local, but if you are there is a guy at Roots that sells these maps at a reasonable cost. (Or, you can walk a few stands further away and get a photocopied version for free from the realtor.) Would love to hear from everyone that is! J They seem to be tangled up together as usual.......I have a William RICHARDSON b. ca 1790's to 1803 in Huntingdon County, mrd a Mary HAWKENSBURG? According to their son John's bio, could it possibly be HOCKENBERRY???? They moved to Indiana County....now my questions. 1 a daughter Mary Ann RICHARDSON mrd my Alfred RINEHART, they lived in Carlisle, Cumberland County, went to Indiana County for a short time....... 2 another daughter, Margaret, married a Thomas BOSH. 3 My Alfred RINEHART's mother is an Elizabeth BOSH b. ca 1793 (mrd name is LAUTSBUGH), I have never been able to find her family, not even one of them, could this Thomas BOSH be related to Elizabeth BOSH??????? 4 There are quite a few William RICHARDSON's in Huntingdon County and I can't figure out who his parents are for sure, I've seen all kinds of birth years for him so... 5 I do think when his wife Mary died in 1855, another daughter went to live with her sister (my Mary Ann and hubby) and their father seems to have married again to a Rosanna (unknown) and had more kids???? Pretty sure that's him in the census across the line in Westmoreland County...... I am trying to collect any and all info on these surnames to "TRY" and sort them out.......any and all help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!! Thanks so much! Sharon in Fl.
