According to the CADI, a cousin Frank Piper Nicholson died 28 June 1953 in San Francisco. California Death Index, 1940-1997 Name: Frank Nicholson Social Security #: 0 Sex: Male Birth Date: 1 Jan 1897 Birthplace: Pennsylvania Death Date: 28 Jun 1953 Death Place: San Francisco Frank was in WWI as an enlistee. He served overseas and was disabled by mustard gas. He married Josephine Crusan and had a son, Charles William Nicholson in 1934. He and his wife divorced and he lived with his mother in Derry, Westmoreland Co., PA at least until 1942 when he was named on the WWII Draft Registration. He was single and unemployed. He disappeared and his son had him declared legally dead after 7 years. The CADI is the first indication of where his father went. Unfortunately, Frank's son died recently, before we researchers found his father. Still, if anyone can find an obit or news article, something to indicate a final resting place for our missing cousin, we would appreciate it. I did check the Veterans' data bases and found nothing for him. If his grave can be found, I want to have the Vets' organizations recognize his service. Shirley Maynard Hampton, VA

Hi, I'm helping a cousin learn more about a Margaret Jane McGOWAN and her husband Robert SPROUL/SPROULL. Margaret's father was known as Mr. McGOWAN and in the 1880 census Margaret lists his birth place as Scotland. Margaret's mother was Jane REED. Mr. McGOWAN died either before Margaret was born, abt.1840, or sometime before 1844 as by that time Jane REED had married George ROSS and given birth to her 2nd child. In the 1850 Census, West Deer Allegheny Co., Pa. - Margaret is listed with the surname of McGOWAN and living in the household of George and Jane ROSS. 1860 Census Burrell, Westmoreland Co., Pa. - Margaret is listed as Margaret J. ROSS 1870 Census Allegheny Twp., Westmoreland Co. Pa. - Margaret is married to Robert SPROUL, a farmer, b. about 1833 in Pa., and they are living next door to George and Jane ROSS 1880 Census Washington City, Washington Co., Iowa - Margaret and Robert are living in Iowa. He is now in sales and lists his father b. in Ireland and mother in Pa. Johnston ROSS, Margaret's half brother, is living with them. When Jane ROSS died, Sept. 24, 1897, Margaret was still living in Washington, Iowa and she is listed as Mrs. R. S. Sproull. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you. Dear Listers, In the interest of good work & complete information on sources for the lay persons who use what it provided here is my reason for writing today. I am particularly interested in the placement of the West Newton Cemetery on line without more detail in regard to the source of the information provided. People sometimes need more than just names & dates. Even the date the work was copied can be most important. What if the death of a loved one in the cemetery is after the copy work was done? Then their person, if died later, would not be there. This is just an example. While directing this to the webmaster & the volunteers who contributed to duplicating the work of Della Reagan Fischer on line. I would also like to mention that this woman & I were personal friends, so I have a better knowledge than many in regard to her works, which through a particular process, had all her materials, including books, stencils for reproduction, etc. deposited in the Elizabeth Twp. His. Society for safe preservation with the rights to reproduce her work, which I know all about. I would suggest that those in charge do more than say to verify the work. They need to look at the front of her book to get the information as to just what she took her compilation from. In other words, office records, walking the cemetery, or both. In addition as to what comments she may have made in regard to how much area she covered, the condition of the cemetery, that might have made good coverage difficult to do. While I had a complete set of all her works from originals, they are now housed in a couple of libraries since I moved & I either use the ones at the historical society or the library, so I can't check that at the moment. Many are aware that her work is in libraries & historical societies all across the country. Of course, now that it is generally thought that all will someday will be "on line" we won't need the historical societies, or will we??? People who think that is going to happen are badly mistaken & it could result in something very undesirable. Also keep in mind that material on line can suddenly disappear, just like your computer can crash. A horrible thought isn't it? I cringe to think about that possibility. Since I am in charge of the genealogical research at the historical society & have been since 1986, & also been involved in genealogical research for over 40 years, my appreciation for both is avid & always will be. In the case of especially the historical societies I'd like to point out that, it is the "little special items" in each local one, that a person might need & never get if it's missed on line & the place is forced to close down. These places, even county ones, can lose financial support in the future. The others struggle for support and volunteers to assist in keeping them vibrant & are vital to success. I do hope those in charge will think seriously about adding more information to this West Newton Cemetery. They had a fire in their office at one time is one thing that should be added. I would be glad to communicate with those in charge if any would like to write to me privately. Happy hunting to all, Ellen J. Ballas (Mrs. Robert J.)
Just a Thank You to JoAnn for sending the link to the Pittsburgh Tribune story on the Denmark Manor United Church of Christ . I live here, but do not get the newspaper, so would have missed out on this article. It is not the first time JoAnn out in CA has been the one to bring something to our (or at least my!) attention in my own backyard! I have several "folks" buried at Woodlawn Cemetery of Denmark Manor, but it has been a few years since I have been there. The dedication ceremony for the grave markers will start at 2 p.m. The patriotic program will include remarks by local officials, music, roll call and singing. A commemorative booklet will feature the Gettysburg address and give historical accounts of Decoration Day, 21-gun salute and Civil War songs. Short biographies of the soldiers, who served in the Grand Army of the Republic and laid to rest there, will be read for this event commemorating the 150th anniversary of the Civil War from April12, 1861 to April 9, 1865. A search continues for the soldiers’ descendants to participate in the program. Historical society members for two years researched records, contacted the U. S. Department of Veterans’ Affairs to secure the new gravestones and then dug the holes and poured concrete to place the new granite stones. The Elizabeth Township Historical Society organized in 1976 as a 501c3 non-profit organization.
