I was staffing the Chestnut Ridge Historical Society today and saw an old ledger type book and decided to see what it was. There was no official title but from the correspondence within it seems to be a record book of a funeral director, John F. Stader of Latrobe PA. This book lists information about the deceased and the costs of the funeral. There are many children listed in this book as well as adults. I copied a very small portion of the book and will list those that I did copy here. This time period is from late 1919 tp the early 1920s. The book in its entirety can be seen at the Chestnut Ridge Historical Society in Stahlstown. Dawne Temple Paul Rozo (Razo?) Dear Listees: I am requesting any help, clues, suggestions regarding the Philip Alwine family who resided in the Census of 1850 in Fairfield Township, Westmoreland County. Philip was 32, a shoemaker, Martha was 33, keeping house, and Sarah, 7, Eliza (later Louisa), 5, and Samuel, 1 were their children. Did Philip die? Did the family move?Martha's maiden name? In 1860, Martha is married to Levi Hammond and living in Antis Twp., Blair Co., PA, also in 1870 and 1880 and then I cannot locate anyone from this family. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Edna

Here is an article from the Pittsburgh Post Gazette about the discontinuation of scanning newspapers. In the article there is a link to the archives that will still be available. In the past I have gotten obituaries and other interesting things from these newspapers. The Allegheny Co. Mailing List Volunteers also indexed thousands of names extracted from these newspapers. My thanks to "Nesbitt" and " Richard Heckman" who answered the question about Exejart PA. I did a Google maps search, and did not locate this name, so undoubtedly the answer is Export, Westmoreland Co., PA. MaryBeth, I looked at the Ancestry.com census records and "Ellen" and William were in the 1920 census for Westmoreland Co. Also 1910, 1900, and 1880. Could not find them on a simple search of the 1920, although if I gave it more time, I probably could have found them. I looked in the "Pennsylvania Line" publication in the section that has 1900 town listings and found nothing that came close to "Exejart", however, my best guess is that it could be "Export" PA. There is a family tree in the Ancestry.com listings that includes William H and Ellen C. Wilmot. It lists Ellen's parents as Painter. That matches one of the census records where a Hannah Painter, "mother" is listed in their household. I would have thought Hannah Painter was Henry's mother in that usually the relationship shown is the relationship to the head of household. But this Lessard-Taylor Family Tree calls it differently. I would suggest that you contact either the Vandergrift or Apollo Libraries. One of them has microfilmed newspapers of their local newspaper, althought I don't know what years, or the name of the paper. Sorry I could not be more specific, but perhaps they can supply an obit. An article from the Valley Independent in 2004: By Emma Jene Lelik For The Valley Independent Wednesday, September 1, 2004 In September 1941, The Daily Independent printed an account of the first kermesh (reunion) held by Lemko Rusyns who had emigrated to the Mid-Mon Valley from the Carpathian Mountains of Eastern Europe. Attended by some 500 persons, it was held at the Russian Club in Pricedale. This was the first formal gathering since the immigrants began coming to the area 65 years earlier and they intended to stage the reunions annually. Ironically, with the outbreak of World War II and the untimely death of one of the organizers, John P. Yewusiak of Charleroi, that was the first and last gathering. That is until 57 years later, in August 1998, when descendants of the 1941 kermesh held the second one at Campground 70, near Bentleyville. The reunions are now annual and Joe Perun, one of the promoters, said there were about 100 present for the kermesh conducted during the past weekend at the campgrounds. In 1941, there were 55 families from the town of Losha, Galicia, which was part of the Austria-Hungarian Empire before World War I, living in Pricedale. These Lemko Rusyns, whose homeland is present-day South Eastern Poland, are part of a larger group of Rusyns who inhabit the Carpathian Mountains of Eastern Slovakia and Western Ukraine. The Rusyns are an ethnic minority who do not have their own country. They have been called Russians, Ruthenians, Rusnaks, Ukrainians and Rusyns. Some have taken the nationality of the country of their origin. Their faith is either Orthodox or Byzantine Catholic. Mary Visniski and Morris Maksemetz had original pictures of the 1941 kermesh, taken by the former Rehula Studio of Charleroi, and Perun had additional copies made. Family members were able to identify many relatives. In 1998 Walter Trembach, who was in the original picture, showed it to his cousin, Audrey Deitz of McKees Rocks, and she started doing genealogy on her grandparents, the Yewusiak and Trembach families. Soon others were tracing roots and what started with a handful of names has grown to over 7,000. Some of the surnames represented are: Barna, Basilwich, Chowansky, Digon, Dolinsky, Dudra, Dudick, Dutka, Fekula, Furtak, Gal, Geeza/Gezzer, Gornik, Homa/Choma, Hubiak, Karel, Karpiak, Kostecki, Krill, Krutilla, Jurila, Malecki, Mitus, Monita, Moskwa, Nowak, Olesniewich, Paluch, Pawlak, Popovich, Rogots, Shlanta, Spulnik, Swist, Telech, Trembach, Wachnowsky, Wozniak, Yewusiak/Youshock, Yuschak, Zak, Zawislak and Zuraw. ******* Che Zuro Whiting
