Obituary, Mrs. John Mullen, Dec. 3, 1906, Evening Times, Cumberland, Md. Last Wednesday evening at nine o'clock, Mrs. John Mullen past away after a long illness at her home. The funeral took place on Saturday morning, when a large concourse of friends gathered at the home to view the remains, which were taken on the nine o'clock car to St. Gabriel's Church, Barton, where a very interesting discourse was given on "Death: by the pastor. Intenment was made in St. Gabriel's Cemetery. Mrs. Mullen was a very highly respected lady and was held in great esteem by her many friends. She was sixty-seven years old and was a native of Ireland. The following children survive: Messrs. Joe, John and Thomas Mullen, Mrs. John A. Martin of Lonaconing, Mrs. Michael Clupp of Midland; Mrs. Pat Monahan, of Ocean; Mrs. Thomas Stakem, of Midland; Mrs. William Martin, of this place. The pallbearers were Messrs. Arthur Hamilton, P.H. Martin, P. T. Cavan, Wm. Beaman, Michael Brehany, Robert King, Robt. Reynolds, Michael McCabe. The flowerbearers were P.H. Gallagher, Thomas Duffy and Edward Ward. Her husband preceded her to the grave about a month ago. Mr. Pat Locke, of Uniontown, attended her funeral. I hope this gives some insight into the Mullen side of this family. I decided to send this to the list also as it is very interesting and includes a lot of names. From the Evening Times, Cumberland Maryland, 1907 Pekin, Maryland, April 27. Last evening St. Gabriel's Church at Barton, was the scene of a very pretty wedding when Mr. William Martin, son of Mr. Patrick Martin and Miss Rose Mullen, youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Mullen, of this place, were united in matrimony. Miss Loretta Martin, of Lonaconing, niece of the bride acted as bridesmaid, and Mr. James Martin, brother of the groom was best man. At 4:30 the bridal party entered the church and proceeded to the altar, where the Rev. Fr. Quinn, of St. Gabriel's parish performed the ceremony. The bride and bridesmaid were beautifully gowned in white Persian Lawn, with hat, gloves and slippers to match, and both carried brides roses. The bridegroom and bestman wore black. At 6 o'clock the guests were invited to the dining room where they were invited to partake of a beautiful supper. After all did justice to the delacacies of the repass, they repaired to the parlor where music, both vocal and intrumental, and other enjoyments were indulged in until eleven o'clock when each and all departed for home. Mr. and Mrs. Martin are two of Pekin's most prominent young folks, with a large circle of friends, who wish them much happiness and prosperity on their journey through life. Among those present were: Mr. and Mrs. John Martin and family, of Lonaconing, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Mullen and family of Detmold, Md., Michael Clupp, John Mullen, Thomas Staken, of Midland, Messrs. Joseph Mullen, Walter, John, James, Roy and Julius Martin of Pekin; Misses Christina and Addie Ricker, of Demold, Maria and Lydia Elbeck, Anna Wilkinson, Loretta Cavan and Ethel Martin, of Pekin. The couple received very many beautiful and useful presents. Mr. and Mrs. Martin will reside in Pekin. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Patricia Sullivan" <sully723@gmail.com> To: <PAWESTMO-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, June 02, 2005 11:46 AM Subject: [PAWESTMO-L] Seeking information > Seeking Cencus/Obituary Information for: > Michael Clupp d. John William Clupp, of whom you wrote, has a World War I draft card. He lived in Turtle Creek and was an electrical ? for W. E. P. His next of kin is listed as Michael Clupp, also of Turtle Creek. He was tall, looks like 6 4, slender (138), had blue eyes and ? brown hair. There is also a lengthy newspaper article about Michael Clupp attending a wedding in Maryland which I will send you privately. As far as I can figure Robert and his family lived in Brinkerton. The way I figured this out is by looking at the list of miners from this mine. http://patheoldminer.rootsweb.com/brinkerton1.html Then I looked them up in the census and every one of them lived in ED 169. So it is more than likely that the Creely family lived in Brinkerton at this time. Melissa >>> I saw your post on rootsweb about books on Greensburg history and postcards..... below is some material about a book that I wrote on Greensburg's industrial past. I have a website where you can find out about the book http://james-miller.org A book has been published on the Greensburg Areas industrial past. My website can fill you in on details about how to get the book. http://james-miller.org about the book: Greensburg PA: The Other Side of the Tracks by Jim Miller, 2003/ available at Tommy's Bookshelf: 121 W. Pittsburgh St. / Greensburg PA 15601 724-834 4556 A New book on railroad-era Greensburg focuses on the productive energies of the area that propelled the Westmoreland County Seat out of the agricultural era and into 19th century machine age industrialism. With the demise of the infrastructure of the industrial era, much of the lore and legend of that era is vanishing with it. This book is an attempt to capture the remaining parts and pieces of the story of Greensburg Area industry. Along with an investigation of the sites of production, and the stories and data that shed light upon them, individuals and families that participated in the movement to industrial expansion are explored. The book is well indexed to give access to the people who were a part of railroad-era Greensburg. This along with an annotated Table of Contents make the book a useful tool for students of the towns past, and people exploring their familys roots. Several parts of the book are walking tours of the town that can be followed on foot to good advantage. Sections on the Southwest Branch RR follow the Five Star Hiking Trail along a stretch of railroad that was once the scene of the areas greatest productive vitality. Abundant maps and illustrations in the form of drawings and photos keep the reader well-posted as to specific locations in the present, and what these locations looked like once upon a time. The author has [2001] published a book on Cambria County PA. He does field work in archaeology, and has done archival work for various cultural resource management firms. He is an exhibiting painter and printmaker, and has taught art on the college level. Many of the illustrations and maps in the book are by him. ------------------------------------------------------------- hi all....... Hello, I am new to this list. In researching my MCDONALD family, I came across a listing for Greenwood Memorial Park in Lower Burrell, Westmoreland Co. Does anyone know if there is a transcription available online? If not, could someone provide me with contact information for this cemetery? Thanks! Tara
When I first began a study of the Alliance Furnace (1790-98 Jacob's Creek, Westmoreland) I attempted to find out the names of the the workers at the Furnace by referring to the 1790 Census. I checked the index for same at the local LDS center and discovered that the enumerator had listed the employees under the name of one of the partners (William Turnbull). As I knew that only the head of the household was named in the 1790, I took the number of souls listed as gospel, and let it go at that. The LDS index counted 26 males over 16 and one slave. I recently had an occasion to view the actual page itself. The original listed only 24 males over 16. The next listings, under separate names, showed that those named were black. Since they were free blacks, they were not listed as slaves, but researchers should note that their color was deemed important enough to designate them as such. More importantly, the LDS compiler ignored the actual listings and combined the over-16s and! thus wiped out this data. Listers should take notice that the LDS indices might be wrong, and that the actual pages are the ultimate truth. To check if blacks in other counties were so listed, I checked Allegheny county and found they were so treated. Allen D. McCrady
