Time magazine (July 11, 2005 issue) has a very interesting article on DNA testing, the different methods used and what they can and cannot reveal. With the interest shown recently in using DNA testing to research different ancestral lines, I thought this article was interesting and thought others might like to read it too. Dawne
Thanks, Jan, for the Ziegler's you found and shared with me. I appreciate that you took the time and effort to read my post, look for, find and send me the information. I will certainly add them to my database where they will await any connections I may find. Thanks, again. I am interested in finding the family of Anna Maria Ziegler abt 1750 ? - 1820 Westmoreland Co, PA, USA wife of Johannes Peter or Georg Uber abt 1730 Palatinate, Germany - abt 1809 Westmoreland Co, PA, USA. They had at least 9 children: 1. Elizabeth abt 1767 Westmoreland Co, PA - 1798 Westmoreland Co, PA no info 2. Simon abt 1768 Westmoreland Co, PA - 1798 Mercer Co, PA md Magdalena Twiney 3. John Peter, Sr. or II 8 Aug 1769 Leigh Twp, Northampton Co, PA - 6 Jan 1818 Hempfield Twp, Westmoreland Co, PA, USA md Naomi Barbara Amy Frantz 4. Jacob Uber 7 Jul 1773 - Jul 1773 5. John Harvey Uber, Sr. 12 Oct 1775 Westmoreland Co, PA - Aft 1850 Bef 9 Feb 1858 md ?1. Anna Maria (unknown)? 2. Catherine Harrold 6. Abraham Uber 6 Apr 1778 Westmoreland Co, PA, USA - 20 Dec 1858 Amsterdam, Liberty Twp, Mercer Co, PA, USA md Magdalena 'Molly' Twiney his bro, Simon's widow 7. Anna Catherine Uber Abt 1779 - Aft 1850 md Heinrich 'Henry' Heasley or Hegsley 8. Michael R. /Uber/ , Sr. 20 Feb 1781 Westmoreland Co, PA, USA - 19 Jun 1861 Springfield Twp, Mercer Co, PA, USA md 1. Mary Ann "Molly" Urey 2. Magdalene Hearly 9. Anna Maria 'Mary'? Uber 21 Dec 1783 Westmoreland Co, PA, USA - 1 Jan 1871 md Daniel Heasley, Sr. A lot of the above information was provided by other Uber researchers and for which I have no documentation. So it should only be used as a possible starting point for others research. Who were Anna Maria Ziegler's parents, ancestors, siblings, aunts, uncles, cousins - anything and everything including the descendants of any of Maria's relatives. I know there are many Uber researchers out there so if anyone already knows or has the information would some kind soul (SKS) please share? Or if SKS has any suggestions as to where to do research or find information, etc.? I would value any insights. I shall keep any Ziegler information provided and see if connections are found. I would welcome hearing from anyone wanting to exchange information on any of the above. Thanks in advance (TIA) for any information anyone cares to share. Hi! I wanted to tell you about these booklets in case someone is interested & before they get out of our area. A lady has asked me to handle this for her. Most of you know that the above named concern has been out of business for a long time & many inquiries come in for these booklets on the different counties that they put out. They can be difficult to find. There is 1 set of the following available but the woman will only let them go in the 3 yr. group as she does not wish to split them up. If anyone on here is interested there is a limited amount of time to contact me before they go out of this area. They comprise 3 years of issues. Please contact me privately if you are interested. Anyone in here living in Westmoreland County? If there are, can someone tell me if the Trib is having problems? I have been trying to access it all day, without luck. Hi Listers, I was wondering what is new out there in genealogy programs. When I began this journey, I started using Family Tree Maker and have liked it to a point. Is there anything out there better that someone has the experience to talk about? Thanks, Jan
Oops....forgot about a major merge from a couple of weeks ago.... It's up to almost 30,000 in my database.... And the program is like the Energizer Bunny....it keeps going and going and going. Dear Susan, Please if it is possible that you or some kind soul (SKS) are willing to do a look-up of a few names I would really appreciate knowing if there are Uber, Twiney, Ziegler, in either of the books listed below or any other books anyone may have or know about. I have other Uber connected names I am interested in but this would be a good start and if these names were found I would know where to look for more names. Wills and probate records can be very enlightening. Thank you so much. Thanks in advance (TIA). Closson, Bob and Mary. Index to Westmoreland County, PA Wills, Volumes 1-9, 1773-1896. Apollo, PA : Closson Press, 1979 "Index to Administrations Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania 1773 - c1830" compiled by Shirley McQuillis and William Iscrupe copyright 1983 by Southwest Pennsylvania Genealogical Services, Laughlintown, PA 15655. While I am posting this I would like to know if anyone is as frustrated as I am about knowing what books would be useful in our genealogical research. I don't mind purchasing books that are useful to me (and which I can use to assist others) but it sure would be helpful to know which books have information that would be useful to me personally. I wonder if it would be possible to post the indices of books so that one could find which books are useful. Does RootsWeb or some other website have such an index? Could some research/genealogical website come to an agreement with authors and publishers to post such an index. I would think it would lead to more sales as an end result. While I may be willing to purchase books that are useful to me I won't buy without knowing whether a book does have some information I do want. I would appreciate others opinions on this topic. I would be interested in any information regarding wills for SMOCK. Thank you. Susan
My daughter and I are attempting to plot our travels for onsite research later this month. We need address/directions to a Shawnee Village Site near West Newton and Long Run Cemetery. A researcher I had been corresponding with was going to send us the addresses, but I can't contact her. My email keeps being returned as her email box is full. If anyone else knows the addresses, or can give us directions. We would really appreciate it. Thanks in advance. Laurie Beth Roman
Susan, Would like a lookup for MCKEAN or SPENCER in will index. Thank you, for doing the lookups for everyone. A real big help!! Carolyn
Dear Lee Anne, There are no Gooden / Gooding / or Goodwin listed in this index nor in another publication "Index to Administrations Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania 1773 - c1830" compiled by Shirley McQuillis and William Iscrupe copyright 1983 by Southwest Pennsylvania Genealogical Services, Laughlintown, PA 15655. This is a list of "Westmoreland County inhabitants who either died without a will (interstate), or who left a will, but did not name executors therein. In either case Letters of Administration had to be issued" There are five John Smith listed in Index to Wills, two meeting your death date: SMITH, John d 1833 Vol 2 p 279 SMITH, John d 1849 Vol 3 p 235 SMITH, John d 1861 Vol 4 p 405 SMITH, John d 1868 Vol 5 p 183 SMITH, John M. d 1894 Vol 9 p 055 There is one in the Index to Administrations: SMITH, John Vol A p 169 in 1807 Hope this helps. I would be happy to do lookups for anyone else. Susan Wood Westmoreland Co., PA
If you have the book mentioned below, please tell me if it lists a will for a Gooden/Gooding/Goodwin or John Smith who died prior to 1849. Closson, Bob and Mary. Index to Westmoreland County, PA Wills, Volumes 1-9, 1773-1896. Apollo, PA : Closson Press, 1979 Lee Anne
Hi Listers, I believe that I may have something of interest. Over a period of time some of you on different roots sites have asked about the soft-cover booklets that were put out by the Southwest PA Genealogical Services in the 1980's. Later they went out of business & from time to time requests come in asking if some of them can still be purchased or reference made to contacting the publisher. I've never seen anyone getting results there. We know that Bedford County was prior to Westmoreland & many people came to this area from that location. I have recently been asked if I would mention that someone has asked me to help them in regard to an interest in acquiring 7 of the issues of St. Clair's Bedford (the History and Genealogy of Bedford County, PA). I will list them below & if anyone is interested they can contact me privately. Regards, Ellen (ETHS) Vol. 1 - Numbers 1, 2, 3, 4. Published in 1981 Vol. 2 - Numbers 1, 2, 3. I did not say that the house were not good. I have been inside them in the 1930s. A lot of company stores where good. In once instance the company store, where I lived ,forgave several months of bills, due to a strike, for the miners who lived purchased. there. As to Victoria owning that mine. It is possible. The mines in the Star junction area were owned by Washington Coal and Coke. In the early 30s. Approx 1933 they were sold to H, C. Frick who was part of U.S. Steel. Grant
