    1. Marriage in Blairsville?
    2. Richard
    3. My Aunt Margaret Zerla married Andrew Pezzoni probably late 1916 or in 1917. Margaret was born in Allegheny county, somewhere souteast of Sturgeon as that is where her brothers were born, in February 22, 1892 or 1893. She died in 1984. Andrew Pezzoni was born in Ossimo, Italy in October 1888. Andrew died in 1967. Margaret lived in Sturgeon after 1900. I am not sure where they were married, but they lived and raised their family in Blairsville. Would their marriage record be listed in Westmoreland county? Richard in California

    3. Sandy -- If you go to http://worldconnect.genealogy.rootsweb.com and search for Thomas Henry Brinker (b. 1818), you will find several entries. My data is under jkw2. Several others there have copied my data, including notes, but at least they say it is from my database. Anyway, you will find 8 children for Thomas & wife Margaret Baer, who lived in Pleasant Unity. He was an MD. There are ancestors for Thomas Henry Brinker back many generations. I have not researched the Baer family, however. Let me know if you need any more help with this. 1. Early Tax Records Info
    2. Ellen
    3. Hi, I have seen published in booklet form an early Derry Twp. Tax Record for the year 1786 & the duplicate for the year 1798 but it's the notation at the end of the page that is of real interest. I'm going to state it exactly as it was written & wonder if it is interpreted by anyone on here the same as I do. I already knew about this man & his involvement years ago but never saw this in print. The above was published in the National Genealogical Society Quarterly - Vol. XXIV - September, 1936 in issue # 3. - Total Number 91 - Washington, DC It was also stated at the end of the listing that it would be continued. Note: If the reader desires more of these important Tax Lists, copied from originals preserved by Mr. Jacob Detar and nowhere else available, or before published so far as can be ascertained, please so inform the editor. G. M. B. It looks as though they were in the hands of Mr. Detar at the time. Since the reference is to contact the editor I'm wondering if copies had been made by the NGS & wonder if they would still be available. Up until now we have relied on what the courthouse has & what is in the PA Archives. It was a number of years ago that I recovered about 14 of the original missing books on various counties for the court house. What more does anyone on here know, if anything? 1. About the Shawnee Village Site near West Newton
    2. Several people showed an interest in finding out what responses I'd get on my question about directions to the subject location. The Shawnees were called the Sewickleys, Asswikelas, Shaweygila, & Hathawekela and in South Carolina they were called the Savannas. According to Sipe, C. Hale. The Indian Chiefs of Pennsylvania. Butler, Pa: Ziegler Printing Co., 1927. On page 35 he talks about our Shawnees as the Sewickleys, Asswikelas, Shaweygila, Hathawekela "come from South Carolina prior to 1730 by way of Old Town Maryland, and Bedford Pa., and principal village called Sewickley Town was at the junction of this (Sewickley) creek and the Youghiogheny River in Westmoreland County. There were probably the first Shawnees to settle in Western Pennsylvania." Then over on page 112 about 3/4 of the way down it talks about the Shawnee town called Asswikales, or Sewickley Town the Youghiogheny River at the mouth of Big Sewickley Creek in Westmoreland County. Page 113 The Asswikales, also called the Hathawekela, before coming to Pennsylvania, were known to the early settlers of South Carolina, as the Savannas. The Asswikales were probably the first Shawnees to settle in Western Pennsylvania within historic times, coming by way of Old town Md, to Bedford pa, then westward. Sewickley Creek in to Westmoreland County, Sewickley Town at the mouth of that Creek and another place called Sewickley Old Town, which some authorities locate on the Allegheny River some miles below Old Chartiers town were named for them. According to Davenport, Jonah. " The examination of Jonah Davenport, Indian trader. Taken before his Hon. Lieut. Gov. of Pensa." Pennsylvania Archives I, Series 1 (1852), 299-300. The number of Shawanese living at Allegheny is reported to be 260 in this 1731 deposition which also details French attempts to gain the alliance of the Shawanese living there by taking several to Montreal and by providing them with a resident gunsmith. A census of the Shawnee towns in Allegheny accompanies the deposition (pp 301-02). This census shows the Shawnees at the town named Asswikales having 50 families lately from S. Carolina to Ptowmack, & from thence thither,. making 100 men; Aqueloma, their chief. It also indicated Achequeloma, Chief of the Asswikales, true to the English. Author: Hanna, Charles A. 2. I am researching a Beaner family in Westmoreland and Somerset Counties. George Beaner, born in England, settled in Westmoreland County with his wife Nancy Baker and had 7 children - John, Daniel, Lewis, Mary Katherine, Samuel, Nancy and George. Daniel moved to Somerset County where is had a farm. For some reason, Daniel changed the spelling of his last name from Beaner to Beener. Does anyone know anything about why Daniel changed the spelling of his surname? Thanks, Colleen

    1. From Liz Myers Please help to save National Archives!
    2. SaveArchives.org Home | Saving NHPRC Overview | Action Alerts ACTION ALERTS Posted June 22, 2005: Continuing the message to restore funding for NHPRC View members of the full Senate Appropriations Committee >>> View members of the Senate T-THUD Subcommittee View guidance for preparing your letter View background information on the NHPRC and NARA budgets The House of Representatives has restored funding for the National Historical Publications and Records Commission in its budget bill--$5.5 million for competitive grants and $2 million for program administration. The House Subcommittee on Treasury, Transportation, HUD, and the Judiciary added the funding back on June 15, and the House Appropriations Committee approved that addition on June 21. This is a very positive result at this stage, and the organizations and individuals who raised their voices to request restoration of funding can be very pleased. Of course there’s more to be done, but now in the Senate, to preserve this funding or to raise it to the $8 million in grants and $2 million in administration that the archives, records management, history, and research community has identified as the essential level of funding. To ensure that this funding survives through the next stages of the budget process, the following steps must be taken: In the Senate: Send letters to your senators. If your senator is on the Senate Appropriations Committee and the Senate Subcommittee on Treasury, Transportation, HUD, and the Judiciary, ask him or her to propose that the funding recommended by the House be increased to $8 million for competitive grants and $2 million for staff and administration in the National Archives budget. (For a list of committee and subcommittee members, see www.savearchives.org) If your senator is not on the Appropriations Committee or the Senate T-THUD Subcommittee, ask him or her to contact Senator Kit Bond, chair of the T-THUD Subcommittee(if your senator is a Republican), or Senator Patty Murray, ranking member of the T-THUD Subcommittee(if your senator is a Democrat), with a request that the funding recommended by the House be increased to $8 million for competitive grants and $2 million for staff and administration in the National Archives budget. Archival organizations should also contact Senator Bond as the chair of T-THUD and indicate their support for funding restoration. Be sure to cite your membership numbers in your support letter. Make a visit to the home offices of your senators or representative. Or, if you or your constituents are going to be in Washington, DC, plan to visit your members’ DC offices. If you can’t talk with the senator or representative, talk to his or her staff members—and specifically the staff member who handles appropriations issues. Again, urge them to contact their colleagues on both the Senate and House Appropriations Committee and the Subcommittees on Treasury, Transportation, HUD and the Judiciary to voice their support for the restoration of funding for NHPRC.
