Sorry for the multiple list posting, but want everyone to be aware that this rare book is being reproduced on a limited edition basis. It was originally produced by the Oilmen's Association for their Reunion in 1907. It is full of great ads, photos, and articles. They were written during the time period when the people who were involved in the oil industry in Western PA were still around. A short story of The United States Well that originated Pithole and the story of 'Spotty" McBride are just a couple of things included in this book. For more information go to www.rootsweb.com/~pabutle2. This book is being offered by the Butler County, PA Genealogical Society. Thanks! Hello, From a newspaper blurb about a wedding in 1909, I learned that the bride, Olive J Hess, did some "cover" designs for George Levy's Pittsburgh paper, the Spectator . From looking into this a bit, I have learned "In February 1930, The Index merged with The Bulletin and became The Bulletin Index. In 1931, the Spectator ("Pittsburgh's smart magazine") and the Western Pennsylvania Golfer were incorporated into The Bulletin Index." And eventually by about 1950 the newspaper no longer existed. I realize that Pittsburgh isn't in Westmoreland and if any lister has any suggestions on where I might look to see if there are archives for this newspaper/magazine, that would be great! Thanks much, Diane :-) dianelr@nc.rr.com
I just found my German gggrandparents on the 1850 Census in Franklin Township (which evidentally doesn't exist anymore) Westmoreland County. Can anyone tell me the names of Lutheran churches in that area? Hoping to find christening records that might tell me where in the Kingdom of Hannover, Germany they came from in 1841. Thank you, Beverlee Stuart-Borok

Hello, A fellow lister found an archive message from LaVonne Hanlon (whose e-mail address used to be Lrhanlon@aol.com "I recall seeing a query for the above families recently. I just came across this information: Leo Skemp Sr. wed Ethel Dick and was an associate of the J.I. Dick Construction Co. Five children were born unto them: James, J. Dick, Thomas, Dorothy, wife of William Cox, and Leo N. Skemp, Jr. This family resided in Scottdale, PA, and I have a brief history of both Dick & Skemp families if anyone is interested. Happy hunting-- LaVonne" When I tried the e-mail address is bounced back as unknown! Anyone in touch with LaVonne ... I suspect that her and my brother-in-law's Skemp families are related ... I only know of one from Scottdale! Thanks, Diane :-)
Hello, There are actually 4 databases … I just stumbled across them! I guess when you stop looking hard …. You just supply last name … The web-site is: http://westmorelandweb400.us:8088/EGSPublicAccess.htm The 4 databases are: Real Property With Mapping Civil Court Marriage License Search Estate Search The marriage license one has older information and the others are more recent (I think mid 1980s till now). Hello, I am researching my brother-in-law's family. We are working back from Robert Oliver Skemp, born August 22, 1910 in Scottsdale. He became an artist of some renown and died in 1984 in NY. Apparently, his mother, Olive Hess Skemp, also had some renown in the 1920s for her art . still working to confirm this last bit (am in touch with the Smithsonian Museum). I am pretty sure that his parents were Olive Hess and Arthur Skemp, who I believe married in 1909. What is interesting about this is that I went to the Westmoreland County online search function and could find a marriage for an Olive F Hess in 1909 . though there is not a corresponding marriage for anyone with a last name of Skemp?!?! Her marriage info has Hess, Olive F, book 35, page n/a, record no. 27859 and a date of 10/14/1909. The only Skemp individuals found were 2 of Arthur's brothers, Leo (1912) and Harold (1919) . so, a bit puzzled by this. Moving on . we find the family in the 1930 census at 702 Arthur Avenue: Arthur Skemp, 44, England, manager - sheet mill Olive Skemp, 42, Pennsylvania Robert Skemp, 19, Pennsylvania (other resources indicate that he might have been studying art in NYC at the time) Nancy Skemp, 16, Pennsylvania John Skemp, 14, Pennsylvania We also find the family in the 1920 census . same address, same family members. In the 1910 census, Arthur J Skemp and Olive H Skemp appear to be newlyweds. Arthur's parents were: Robert Skemp and Kate Summer who emigrated in the late 1880s. We first find them in 1900 at 38 Loucks Avenue, Scottdale Skemp, Robert, 41, England, Supt Rolling Mill Skemp, Kate S, 43, England Skemp, Robert, 19, England, Clerk Rolling Mill Skemp, Arthur, 16, England, at school Skemp, Leo, 12, England, at school Skemp, Harold, 10, Pennsylvania, at school Skemp, Robert, Father, 75, England, retired (he came over in 1890 . have passenger record) Sumner, Sarah, M in law, 80, England Sumner, Hannah, S in law, 41, England By the 1920 census, Arthur and Harold have left the home, the father (Robert Sr) appears to be deceased and the mother and sister in law are still with them . the mother in law is now 90! Haven't yet looked hard for them in the 1930 census! Looking at the 1900 census, we do find an Olive J Hess with her family . 422 Pittsburg Street, Scottdale Hess, Oliver, 46, Pennsylvania, Physician Hess, Katherine, 36, Pennsylvania Hess, Olive J, 15, Pennsylvania, at school Hess, Evelyn, 8, Pennsylvania, at school Hess, Helen R, 6, Pennsylvania That pretty much exhausts what we have learned so far. We assume that Arthur and Olive did marry in Scottdale. We also imagine that her parents and his parents are buried in Scottdale (as well as his grand parents) . we heard that at least Olive maybe moved to New York at some point . obviously, not till after 1930! So, any help either with these families or with resources for the area . would be wonderful! TIA, Diane :-) Diane Richard 2408 Dunbrook Ct Raleigh, NC 27604 dianelr@nc.rr.com

Hello list! I'm researching my ancestor Philip Milliron, and I find him in the 1800 Wheatfield census, then Fairfield census data in 1810 and 1820. In fact, I believe he lived in what is not St. Clair Township, just north of New Florence, on the Westmoreland side of the river.. 1) Is it possible that area was considered "Wheatfield" in 1800? 2) What year was St. Clair formed from part of Fairfield? Thanks, Tom
