Diane, You are welcome. Sorry, I left out an o it should have been spelled Prothonotary. But anyway a Prothonotary is the chief court clerk in certain courts of law. I think that there aren't to many places outside of Pa that uses that term. Hello, I have done some more research and realize that in the older censuses for the SKEMP family (versus the newer ones), they state that they were naturalized c. 1894 (and not c. 1912 . big jump there!) . If I am remembering correctly, you had to be in the country 5 years to become a citizen . since they emigrated in 1887 and 1888 this would work! So, if someone lived in Scottdale, where would they possibly have gotten Naturalized? Since we are now pre-1906, my recollection is that I cannot use a FOI request as the records are only at whatever courthouse issued the papers! TIA for any help! Happy Labor Day weekend! Hello, I have learned that my BIL's great-great-grandfather and other family members are buried in Scottdale Cemetery! I am hoping that SKS might go by the cemetery and just see what the tombstone says on it! I am especially curious as Robert Skemp Jr is not listed in the information I received (he died between 1920 & 1930) . (and I would imagine he is buried with his wife Kate and father Robert). Also, an obituary stated that Oliver Hess (and possibly his wife Katherine Rakestraw Hess) are buried in Scottdale Cemetery and yet they were not in the list kept at the Scottdale Bank & Trust Company! Maybe they are nearby? Scottdale Cemetery . Thanks for all the info everyone! I had completely forgotten about FOI requests ... I had used that myself, years ago, on a different branch! And, if that is an issue I will try the Registrar of Wills in Greensburg! Thanks again everyone! Diane, You might also try calling the Westmoreland County Courthouse in Greensburg Pa. That is where I found my ggrandfather's records. I'm sorry that I don't have the number, but information should have it. Just ask for the Office of the Registrar of Wills, and they should be able to help, you might also have to try Alleghany County, since a lot of times people thought they would have to go to the bigger cities to apply for citizenship, Jill

Hi Diane, Here is a link to the US Citizenship and Immigration. I think the naturalization records are kept in the county in which they were applied for. But some are duplicated at this site and they have citizenship records. http://uscis.gov/graphics/aboutus/history/natzrec/natrec.htm Dawne ----- Original Message ----- From: "Diane Richard" <dianelr@nc.rr.com> To: <PAWESTMO-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, September 01, 2005 2:09 PM Subject: [PAWESTMO-L] Where find Naturalization records, c. 1912, living in Scottdale > Hello, > > > > I am continuing to track down the Robert SKEMP family who emigrated from > the > UK in the 1880s. Sorry, I meant to write "There is no fee for FOIA information." That's not exactly true. Most requests do not end up having fees, though you may get charged. There is no standard or set fee; you're covering extraneous costs, which are minimal, and therefore rarely charged. You can find this info at: http://uscis.gov/graphics/aboutus/foia/request.htm And specific office addresses can be found on this page: http://uscis.gov/graphics/aboutus/foia/ADDRESS.HTM Should've re-read my email before sending it off! Hello, I am continuing to track down the Robert SKEMP family who emigrated from the UK in the 1880s. The 1920 and 1930 Census entries consistently state that the family was naturalized in 1912. Who would hold naturalization records for this period? Thanks much, Diane :-) Raleigh, NC USA, dianelr@nc.rr.com

I have written to both Poke Run and Congruity Churches for information on my COCHRAN line. They have been helpful. You could visit but I would call ahead to see when their secretaries are there. You did not mention New Salem (Delmont). People transferred there in 1849 from both Poke Run and Congruity. McQuaids and McIlvans are buried in the New Salem Presbyterian Cemetery. I have some McIlvain data since they married into my COCHRAN family. There are still descendants attending the Delmont Presbyterian Church. Congruity Presbyterian Church RD #2 Box 506 New Alexandria, PA 15670 there is an LDS microfilm (0496646) of records transcribed by Della Reagan Fischer Poke Run Presbyterian Church 1091 Poke Run Church Rd. I'm wondering if any of the locals know if Congruity and Poke Run churches will permit anyone to search their records, and if so, what is the procedure. Do they need advance notice, etc.? Thanks R. L. McIlvain Idaho Springs, CO McIlvain, McCullough, Morgan, Larimer McQuaid
Hello Lists! First of all, please excuse the duplication for those of you that subscribe to more than one of these lists. I found this website today that has a great series of videos about local history and topography. http://www.alle-kiskitoday.com/articles/archives/8 Enjoy. Tom
Is anyone on this list working on the Gross family of Westmoreland County? Christian Gross is the oldest member of this family and he was married to Catrina (Catharina). The records for children and grandchildren are mostly found in the Reformed Church records of Weber, that Rev. Paul Miller Ruff and Della Reagan Fisher published. I believe that Christian and his family moved to Westmoreland County about 1783 and most of the family remained there. Christian is died about 1790 per his estate papers. He had a son John who I have not been able to find any information on and am wondering if anyone else has his details. I descend from Christian's son Jesse who married Catharine Beck and have a great deal of information that I can share for this line, the line of Peter Gross and also the son Joseph. I have information on the daughter's of Christian to a point, but that gets sketchy fairly fast. I have many deeds and will for this Gross family that links them together and am happy to share any information that I have. I have discovered that they came from Northampton Co, PA, but the records are sketchy for this particular family. There is another Christian Gross who lived in Northampton County, but he is not mine. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Margaret
