Fellow List Members, I am attempting to track down information on my 3rd great grandaprents, Andrew and Mary (Igo/Igou) Ashbaugh, more specifically, Mary Per my limited information, Mary (1812-aft 1874) was the daughter of Daniel and Margaret (Bails) Igo/Igou. I have located Mary in the 1870 census listed as a widow, and she is listed as a witness when her daughter Margaret (my gg grandmother) married Samuel S. Smith in Derry Station 27 October 1874. After that I can find no record of her. Are there any death records, obituaries, estate files, etc. that can be searched on-line, or does anyone on the list have access to such information via privately owned records and/or books? Any assitance is most appreciated. Thanks in advance! Regards, Mike Johnston Oswego, IL
Ron, I don't have anything in my database for your other two requests. I did check the WV vital records online at <http://www.wvculture.org/vrr/va_select.aspx> I could not find Ruben's death but did find the birth of Raymond B. HOLLIS, 9 Feb 1920 , son of Ruben G. HOLLIS & Mary M. EMSWELLER - but you probably already have that. I have several Dorothy RAGERs without husband's information. Do you have any dates or other clues for the Dorothy who married Dallas JACKSON? I've "rescued" an old photograph of David CARROLL which was taken at the Springer Studio in Scottdale, Pennsylvania. The photograph appears to have been taken in the 1890's or early 1900's with David likely in his 30's or 40's at the time it was taken. In addition to his name, someone has written "Joe's bro" on the back of the photograph. Based on limited research I believe that this may be a photograph of David Newcomer CARROLL b. 5 Jun 1866 in Wharton, PA to parents William Asbury CARROLL and Caroline Masure HAGER. David married Ada May CHISNELL on 27 May 1889 in Uniontown, PA and later died in Scottdale, PA on 24 Aug 1906. During the 1900 census records indicate that the family was living in Scottdale, PA with records providing the following information: David N. CARROLL, age 33, born June 1866, married 11 years, born in PA, parents born in PA, Planing Mill Prop Ada CARROLL, wife, age 30, b Jan 1870, married 11 yrs, 6 children/6 living, b England, parents born in Eng, to USA 1872 Charles B. CHISNELL, brother-in-law, age 21, b Dec 1878, b PA, parents born England, Teamster During the 1900 census, David's father was living in Wharton, PA with census records providing the following info: William A. CARROLL, age 68, born Mar 1832, a widower, born in PA, parents born in PA, a Farmer In 1910 David's father remains in Wharton, PA with census records providing the following information: William A. CARROLL, age 78, widower, born in PA, parents born in PA/WV, a Farmer Jennie JOHNSON, servant, age 48, divorced, born in PA, parents born in PA, a Cook Franklin K. BAUMGARDNER, boarder, age 60, widower, born in PA, parents born in PA, a Farm Laborer I am hoping that I can find someone from this family so that this wonderful old photograph can be returned to its rightful place with family. Karen, I found in John Humphrey's Pa. Births, Philadelphia County, 1766-1780 the following appeared: Kessler, John b. 17 Sept. 1774 Parents Andrew and Catherine. The records came from St. Joseph's Catholic Church established in 1733. A list of baptisms for this church was published in 1886 by the American Catholic Historical Society. There were also the following additional children listed with these parents: Helen b. 11 Aug. 1777 Anna Mary b. 24 Sept. 1769 Valentine b. 4 Mar. 1767 They were all baptised at the same church. Hope this helps! What a wonderful project. It must be 20+ years since I visited Beulah UP Cemetery. It looks better than I remember it. Kind souls must be weeding it. DAUGHERTY: My great-great grandparents (John and Catherine Leasure Daugherty) and several of their Union Army veterans/sons and wives are buried there. Their daughter Catherine (9-19-1843 to 1-17-1864) is buried there. MAXWELL: Also, the brother and sister-in-law (Henry and Elizabeth and Maxwell) of a great-great grandfather (Robert Maxwell) on another line are buried there. John and Catherine Daugherty's daughter Mary became the wife of Henry Maxwell's brother Robert on June 2, 1864. Mary and Robert were later members of Crossroads Presbyterian Church and are buried at that cemetery in Monroeville. There may also be a relationship with the McWilliams and Morrows buried there. My great grandfather- From The Latrobe Bulletin 03/25/1931 John Rollen Mellors, aged 82, the father of Joseph R. Mellors, of 1319 Jefferson street, Latrobe, died at his home in Mammoth, at 6 o'clock this morning. He had been ill for some time with dropsy. Mr. Mellors was born in Derbyshire, England, March 9, 1848. On the fifth of next June it would have been 40 years that he had lived in Mammoth. He is survived by his widow, and the following children: Mrs. Margaret Thomas, of Luxor; Mrs. R. S. Barnhart, of Hunker; Mrs. Tony Panzona, of Grindstone; Joseph R. Mellors, of Latrobe; George F. Mellors, of Mammoth. The funeral cortege will leave the home at 1:30 o'clock Saturday afternoon. Funeral services are to be held in St. Paul's Reformed church, Trauger, at 2 o'clock. Note: His wife was Margaret Marie Graham Hardesty from Preston County, WVA. We had always thought that John's middle name was Roland, so I don't know if we were misinformed or if this was a typo by the paper. Also I believe Panzona should have been Panzone. Dawne Temple
Hello list, It is that time of year again that I go searching once again for the parents of my John Kessler. My ancestor John Kessler died in Botetourt Co., VA and at the time of his death from the mortality schedule we find that John's widow reported the death of John was in Feb 1850 (the year of the census) at the age of 75 years, caused by old age, and was born in Pennsylvania. This would make him born in 1775. John Kessler married Nancy Waskey 8 March 1794 Frederick Co., MD. We found the index of marriage for John Kessler and Nancy Waskey but were told the actual marriage certificates were burned in a fire. All that remains is the index. Index to Marriage Licenses 1778-1865 Frederick County Marriage Record p. 420 No. 1: Nancy Waskey to John Kessler Date of issuing license: Mar 8, 1794. Family beliefs have my John as a son of Andreas (Andrew in some records) Kessler 1746-1809 and Anna Maria Rama of Donegal Twp., Westmoreland Co., PA. There have been various spellings of Kessler ie: Kesler, Keslar, Kefler, Kepler, Kister, Keisler and also we are unsure if Rama is actually the name and has been suggested it is Rehmen or Raymer. For a fact we know that Andreas Kessler was the son of Johann George Bernhard Kessler 1711-1792 (master shoemaker in Frederick, MD) who came to this country from Winden, Germany in 1751 with his wife Anna Catherina (Hauswirth) and 4 children, Johann George Bernhard Kessler Jr b. 1729 (lastmaker in Frederick, MD), Johannes b. 1742 (who may have moved to Hagerstown, MD), Andreas b 1746 (referenced above) and Susanna Catherine b. 1749 (who I can't find anywhere). Recent DNA testing proves that my John Kessler from Botetourt Co, VA is genetically linked to Andrew Kessler Jr. 1770-1860 of Frederick Co., MD (proven son of Andreas) but was my John a son or a nephew of Andreas 1746-1809? Family Bible records show a son John Kessler born 24 May 1772 in Donegal Twp, Westmoreland Co. PA to Andreas and Mary Rama Kessler. A death date of 16 Dec 1840 was found for a John Kessler at Chestnut Ridge Historical Society, Stahlstown, PA but was this John the son of Andreas Kessler 1746-1809? There was a John Keslar who was given a warrantee 60 acres 27 Mar 1826 in Donegal Twp., Westmoreland Co., PA but found no deed transfer. The court house clerk said the government gave John the land for services rendered or from an estate settlement. He checked the old record book and it showed the land of this John Keslar adjoining the land of Peter Keslar that lived in Donegal in the year 1826. It lists no buildings on the property. John Kessler - deed Book 21 page 532, (24 Jun 1835) John Keslar of Donegal Township recorded an agreement to sell 15 acres at Laurel Hill Donegal Township to John Ganer of the same for $160.00. The agreement was dated 12 Dec 1829 but not recorded till 1835. The land adjoined John Ellis, heirs of Cornelius McLain and John Trough. John Keslar signed John Ganer by mark Adam Bowling and Elizabeth C. Larimer witnessed. No mention of a wife According to a deed dated 23 Nov 1808 my John Kessler came from Rockbridge Co., VA (where he had moved with the Waskey family from Frederick Co., MD) to purchase 156 and 73 acres on the waters of the Catawba Creek. Deed book 9 :545. The land was at Cedar Ridge (now called Simmons Ridge) at the headwaters of Catawba Creek, 5 miles north of Fincastle, VA. Anything that anyone might find related to the name John Kessler would be helpful. Maybe with more information I can sort this family out and find who the actual parents of my John Kessler were. I truly appreciate any help. Hi Beverly, I wanted to send for Myrtle KING's death certificate online but it comes up in default if you don't have the day & month entered on the form! Hence, I need the day! My married named was FOSS but my 1st husband William J. FOSS (son of William FOSS, b. c1882) died on 27 Dec 1960 on active duty in the military. He was a career man. I was 8 mo. pregnant & our son was b. 6 weeks later on my birthday 6 Feb 1961! Here is Myrtle FOSS - FOOSE in the census records: 1900 Census -- 3rd Ave., New Kensington Borough, Westmoreland Co., PA EVANS Mary H W F Sep 1850 50 Wd or Na 0 0 PA * ** FOOSE William Nep W M Oct 1881 18 S PA PA PA Helper Heater *** Myrtle Nic W F Dec 1885 15 S PA PA PA Attend School *Hamburg? **PA *** Ten Mill? Owns Home NOTE: Bill & his sister Myrtle were raised by Mary (Seese), who is their aunt or step aunt. Bill's parents supposedly left an estate & he had a private tutor, named HOFMAN. His parents d. bet. 1886-1900. Did they die in an epidemic in Westmoreland Co. - Allegheny Co., PA area? Mary (Seese) EVANS states in this census, both of Bill's parents were b. in PA but Bill said his father Harry FOSS was b. in Scotland & his mother Hanna Elizabeth HANSEN was b. in Denmark -- I question this info because Mary (Seese) EVAN's stepfather is a Joseph FOOSE! I believe a son of Joseph's is the father of Wm & Myrtle FOSS - FOOSE! Then of course Mary would be their "Aunt Mary"! 1910 Census -- Main Street, Parnassos Boro., Westmoreland Co., PA KING John A. Good morning list, I would like to find the obit of Myrtle (Foss) KING who d. in Feb of 1975, in New Kensington, Westmoreland Co., PA. I would, also, of course like to know the day of the month she died so I can send for her death certificate. What local newspaper(s) would have her obit? Is there a library in the New Keningston area that would make a copy of the obit for me or would the newspaper do this services? I spent all day yesterday online trying to find the obit or the cemetery where she might be buried but to no avail. Any suggestions are most welcome! I live at the other end of PA & do not know the New Kensington area, sorry to say. Helen M. (Webber) Imburgia 396 Derry Drive Aston, PA 19014 (610) 358-1102 HMWEBBER@aol.com
I have the DeWALT name on a death certificate for Harriet W. WALKER. Her maiden name was Harriet Wilhelm IRWIN, b. Feb. 6, 1854, died Feb 4, 1929, buried at Poke Run Cemetery in Washington Twp. She married John Townsend WALKER, about 1875. Her death certificate lists her father as James IRWIN. Also, her death certificate indicates her mother's maiden name as Sarah DeWALT. But census records for 1850, 1860 and 1870, list her mother as Ann Maria or Ann M. I have been pondering this on my own, but now that the DeWALT name has come up on this list---are there some DeWALT researchers who can shed some light on this Sarah and/or Ann M. DeWALT married to James IRWIN, in the Washington Twp. area? Linda
